”Thanks, and woahh, that’s dope!” This synergy buff they got for being in a party together… it seemed as though there was still plenty Argent had left to learn about this world. Anchors, for example, worked like elements in video games, and her class was a GIFT anchor. For this specific synergy to pop up, that must’ve meant… ”We must be a pretty well balanced team, huh? That’s convenient!” [break][break]
Argent had to temper her surprise when the girl knew her name. Ahh, of course, being in a party had more benefits than just the buffs. Using her own menu, Argent pulled what information she could about her party mates as the man–Emir–vanished. ”Ooh, another stealth guy, that’s awesome! Yea though, that’s right. Hana, then? And he’s Emir, okay okay I get it, I see how it works!” [break][break]
Gleaning what she could of the other two as they delved into the sewers together, it was their levels that first stood out to Argent. ”Oh shit, you guys are a lot higher level than me. Haha, and here I was thinking I was doing good so far. Looks like I’ve got some catch-up to do!” Thinking back to the party buff they got, Argent started to wonder what these two were capable of. ”My class is a DPS, though I’m not sure how level-scaling works- man, if that’s even a thing here.” [break][break]
They didn’t have much time to socialize before more enemies appeared. There were a lot more here than she had faced alone in these rancid tunnels, and her movement was a lot more limited with the nasty fluids. Fighting would be difficult here, but despite that, Argent was excited. With a couple more people to help her out, was still confident in completing the mission soon. [break][break]
”Aw shit, why’s it always spiders? Tch, here goes!” [break][break]
Knife in hand, Argent’s target was the big-ass spider. Rats and other vermin were less of a threat than that thing, so she wanted it GONE before moving on to the fodder. Besides, she wasn’t really equipt for AoE… maybe one of the other two could clear them more easily while she focused the spider thing. [break][break]
On the bright side, just because she was a melee class didn’t mean she was out of options for range! ”Hiyah!” As she moved toward the spider, Argent tossed her dagger at it, blade flying in a straight line to lodge itself in the monster’s carapace. [break][break]

Argent threw her hands up as she met up with the other two, trying to make it clear she didn’t know they were other people walking around the mind. They didn’t seem hostile, at least, and upon realizing this- ”Woah, a guitar?! [break][break]
Side-tracked by the cool guitar the girl–Hana–summoned, Argent recomposed herself for introductions. ”Oh sorry, call me Argent! And yeah, you got that right; I’m questing!” Argent took a step back, placing her fore-finger to her chin in thought. ”To be real though, you guys are the only other people I’ve seen down here, monsters aside. [break][break]
Even if her brother had been here, it seemed like she had missed him. Surely they would’ve crossed paths by now if he was here, right..? Whatever the case though, the stronger she got, and more people she met, the higher the chances would be that she ran into him again. That’s how math worked, right?! So hearing Hana’s offer to party–on top of how fun that’d be–Argent wasted no time in accepting. [break][break]
”Ooh, yeah that’d be lit! Let me just…” While she had learned of the party buffs from other people, Argent herself had never joined one yet. Anytime she fought with other people in the past, it was back when none of them really knew how things worked yet. [break][break]
It took her a hot second to figure out the process, but once she got it, Argent was beyond ecstatic, pumping her fists with joy. ”THERE WE GO!” [break][break]

”Yeah, that’s right!” As she continued slashing through the little spiders, Argent was, again, appreciative of this guy’s help with his whip. His comments, though… not so much. Fighting the arachnids caused another shift of her phase, the partial invisibility fading away and being replaced with a buff to Argent’s WIL stat. [break][break]
Her phases could raise her own, and her new Skill could lower an enemy’s WIL stat, hmm? Being an Assassin, Argent knew how useful things like POWER and SPEED were, but WILLPOWER seemed like it would play a pretty important role in progression in this video-gamed world as well. It was definitely something to keep in mind as she continued to level up. For now though, she had spiders to kill. [break][break]
”Relentless Slash!” [break][break]
Argent’s ability guided her attacks once more, again causing her to slice through two more of the spiders. This ability got stronger with her SPEED stat, and yet some of her others were based on MAGIC… man, things really were a lot more complicated under the surface level, huh? [break][break]
Due to their combined efforts, another pop up appeared before the assassin: The mission had been completed! There were still a couple of spiderlings left, which she found to be interesting. They didn’t have to eradicate every monster here, just enough to clear the immediate area? Well, at least she could get a move on once more, but first…[break][break]
She turned, facing one of the last spiders and flipping her dagger in her hand. It charged, and she feigned doing the same- only to juke it out at the last second, ducking to the side and tossing the knife clean into the monster’s back. [break][break]
”Well, looks like that’s that. GG, Mr. Cardigan!” Argent reclaimed her knife, looking to the guy once more before vanishing, fully invisible this time. Was she being extra by using her class’ phase shift to turn invisible? Yeah, probably. But was it worth it to slink away into the shadows like a badass? Absolutely! [break][break]
”Oh, and- the name’s Argent, don’t forget it~”[break][break]

This place was kinda annoying. Argent hugged the wall as a bat came into her view, crouching low to sneak up behind it. The monster fluttered in place, seemingly waiting for someone to come pick a fight with it… She fought a few others so far, and the bat’s annoyingly acute hearing made Argent’s stealthy class a bit less effective.[break][break]
The Lunar Assassin sighed and activated her bracelet, causing her pupils to flash heart emojis as the buff activated. Some of the items she managed to pick up had turned out to be pretty handy, and she loved finding all the neat combos she could pull off with them. The buff increased the power of her attacks, which combined with a solid YEET of her knife, meant that she was able to cleanly take out some of these bats without worrying of much danger to herself. [break][break]
Argent clambered over to the monster, plucking her dagger and continuing on again. The cooldowns that came with her items and abilities were a little bit of a bother here; these monsters were stronger than ones she had faced before. Not only that, but… [break][break]
”Mannn, this place stinks! There’s no treasure anywhere!”[break][break]
After discovering the convenience of fast travel, Argent thought that Paris would be the place to BE during this time, what with Valentine’s coming around and everything. She had expected to find cool events and quests, but more importantly, to find people–and she hadn’t yet found who she was looking for. At least for now, the missions could keep her preoccupied…[break][break]
Argent still needed to kill a lot more monsters to finish the quest down here in the catacombs. She hated the idea of using a cheese strat to do it, but as long as she was alone, that might be her best option here. As she continued through the tunnels, Argent suddenly turned a corner only to find-[break][break]

"Hey, watch it." Cute?? She wasn't cute, she was a badass! And the way he flung his whip past her like that, it was definitely intentional. Who did he think he was?! Argent was glad to have someone there to take the lead and help take out these spiders at least, but if this guy kept it up, she'd be done with him pretty soon.[break][break]
Her focus was drawn by a pop up, another message from the "system" when she killed that last spiderling. Another level up! Last time she had selected the ability option, giving her access to that Relentless Slash. It had been so useful so far, so she'd definitely have to pick up another one. As for the other options, Argent could invest in stats, or select a [??] option.[break][break]
Gacha… the bane of gamers everywhere. That said though, these spiders were a cakewalk, and she was only level 3 so far. She had a good weapon, decent stats, and some useful abilities- what was there to lose? Clicking the [??] option, Argent read through the "Skill" it rewarded her with. [break][break]
Hmm… this seemed a bit different from her other abilities so far. Another system in this weird game of life? Whatever the case, it sounded useful. With the spiderlings ahead, this was the perfect opportunity to use it.[break][break]
"Ohh lookie what I just unlocked. These spiderlings seem to be the last of them in this area, so let's knock them out with a bang! On my signal, yeah?"[break][break]
Taking full advantage of her partial invisibility, Argent snuck around to the side of the group, watching for an opening, and when she finally found it… [break][break]
"BANG!" Argent leapt forward, revealing herself from cover while tossing her knife yet again at the monsters. It slunk into one of the arachnids, knocking it away as the others turned, startled. [break][break]
"Who wants some?!" As some of them began to charge for her, Argent activated her Skill. Lunar Madness overcame one of the spiderlings, stopping it in its tracks as its WIL was lowered. Seeing their ally hesitate, the others there slowed- a mistake Argent took full advantage of.[break][break]

For someone that was “pretty basic”, whatever kind of abilities this guy had were just as wicked as that whip of his. Argent herself was nimble enough to avoid damage against most things she’s fought so far, but this dude just STRAIGHT UP tanked a spider hit. Sure, they were weak, but he didn’t even seem to be poisoned by it. Another one of his abilities seemed pretty magical, marking one of the spiders and killing it. Argent didn’t know how that one worked, but she didn’t want to be on the receiving end to find out. [break][break]
”Niceee that’s kinda creepy but like hey, it works! What’s your class then, some kinda… err, explorer? Indiana Jones type beat?”[break][break]
Resuming the ruined path up the stairs once more, It seemed like they had almost reached the top of the hill. Sure enough, the end of the stairs was marked by a small marble arch. And, Sure enough, the arch was covered in spiderlings. ”Another grouping, hm? At least we’re almost to the top… as many as we’ve taken out so far, surely the quest is almost complete right?”[break][break]
Argent crouched down as she surveyed the spiders ahead. They looked just like the others that had already been defeated, so she had no doubt that they could take them out easily. One of the spiders was dangling from a web right in the center of the arch- something that Argent grinned as she noticed and began tossing her knife in her hand. [break][break]
”On my side of things, my class makes me an assassin. I don’t have much variety of attacks, but the ones I do have…”[break][break]
From the spider’s perspective, it must’ve seemed like the attack came out of nowhere! One minute it was dangling from a web, and the next, Argen’ts dagger had soared through the air and pinned it clean against the ruin’s stone behind it. [break][break]

Picking her Lunar Knife out of the spider's corpse, she realized one of the men did actually decide to follow along. It was the one in the jumpsuit… she didn't trust him, at least could be glad that the bird man didn't follow along. He was fighting against his own batch of spiderlings, she had just been so carried away that she didn't even realize until now.[break][break]
Taking out that last spider had put Argent into her next lunar cycle, Full Moon, granting her that blur and partial invisibility that she loved so much. "Any fancy moves? Now's your chance." Argent pointed to the next grouping of spiders ahead of them. "Start an attack and I'll sneak around behind them for a pincer, we'll wipe them out quick!"[break][break]
Taking full advantage of her shifting image, Argent crouched down along the side of the path. She used whatever cover she could find to quickly strafe around to the side of the monster group, utilizing a little bit of parkour to pull herself up a ledge. From there, she waited, dagger in hand, waiting for this guy to give her the perfect opportunity to strike.[break][break]
Waiting.. waiting.. and… NOW! Suddenly darting out of her hiding spot, Argent sliced straight through one of the remaining spiders from behind. Her invisibility from Full Moon had the handy effect of empowering her strikes, and with the element of surprise added on, the spiderling never stood a chance![break][break]

Running toward the Boss again for another attack, Argent heard the alarms in her head as her phase shifted again. She was in her Half Moon phase, gifting her a resilience to her WIL stat, but that also meant…[break][break]
”SHIT!” [break][break]
A laser from the Sorcerer’s orb curved toward the woman, striking her in the arm. She no longer had the protection of her partial invisibility that came with the last phase! She tried to scramble out of the way of another energy beam, only for it to also curve and strike her in the back. Argent cried out from the hit, ducking behind a pillar to think. [break][break]
If she wasn’t protected anymore, there was no telling if she would even be able to get close enough to get a hit on the Boss! She needed to get back into Full Moon, but that could take eons… No, wait a second! She didn’t need Full Moon Phase, she just needed the invisibility! The next phase gave that too, didn’t it?! And she still had one more ability up her sleeve that she hadn’t yet been able to use…[break][break]
Argent could hear the lasers breaking up the pillar she was hiding behind, and they finally managed to destroy it entirely just as she came up with her new plan. One of the lasers managed to punch through, stabbing her chest… another hit like that, and she would be done for.[break][break]
As the marble pillar crumbled away, she glared at the fiery blue eye-pits of the Sorcerer’s Skull, activating her ability. ”PHASE CHANGE!” Another onslaught of lasers bombarded the pillar, but it was too late; Argent was gone. [break][break]
The final phase granted to her by her Lunar Assassin class, New Moon, granted her full invisibility. It was exactly what she had needed to dash away from the pillar unseen. The Sorcerer, confused, started using its orb to blast attacks out all around the giant room, but it was too late. Argent took full advantage of the invisibility to sneak up right behind the boss to deliver her finishing move.[break][break]
”CRESCENT SLASH!!! The blade of her dagger glowed to life as she once again used the ability. With the added damage of the backstab bonus, AND the bonus of her New Moon phase (an even stronger effect than the Full Moon!) Argent cleaved the Skeleton’s arm cleanly off of its body, robes and all. She felt like an anime character with that attack; there was a moment of time where it seemed like nothing had happened, only for the slash to separate the boss in two! [break][break]
The skeleton clattered to the ground after that attack, with the fire in its eyes dimming. Argent picked up the orb, tossing it in her hands as she walked up to the fallen Boss. She wished Auri had been here to witness this… but above all she hoped he was okay. Was this happening where he was at too? She taught him how games worked well enough that he should be able to understand it, but… Damn it, if only her phone had been able to work! [break][break]
It was time to get going, she needed to find him. [break][break]
”GG.” With one final slash of her knife, Argent shattered the Boss’ skull. As the flames inside finally went out, a new staircase formed. Finally, an exit to this wicked library had appeared. Leaving the library, it quickly became clear that everything on the outside had gone to shit as well. The whole world seemed to be upside down now... This was gonna be interesting![break][break]

As the battle commenced, Argent dashed straight for her knife. It bounced to the ground after hitting the skull of the Sorcerer, who fired beams of energy at her from its orb as she ran. The beams seemed to have an almost seeking property to them, at first curving in her direction- but they all fell short, losing track of her and zapping the pillars and floor of the room instead. This… must have been the effect of her Full Moon ability! It had mentioned homing effects were less effective against her, but she didn’t expect to get to use it so soon![break][break]
Snatching up her knife, Argent twisted and began charging toward the Sorcerer. She wanted to end this as quickly as possible, but that flying book was a problem, constantly positioning itself in her way to block her path. ”Move, damnit!” The Sorcerer kept shooting lasers at her, and while they were missing while she kept moving, if she stopped, it was obvious that they would fry her.[break][break]
Being put in this tough position gave her another idea. Winning the battle against the Animated Statue earlier, she had gotten a “level up”--more proof that this was a video game–and along with that came access to another ability. She feigned going left, and the book floated to the left, where Argent suddenly pivoted towards it with her knife. ”Relentless Slash!” The attack was weaker than her Crescent Slash, and had a randomizer ability with it. It unfortunately only struck the book once, but with the added bonus from her Full Moon, Argent was still able to cut right through the animated monster! [break][break]
”Hell yeah! It’s just you and me now, bonebag!” She could see the Boss’ eyes flicker with rage and its skeletal jaw open in a way reminiscent of a scream. The beams of energy it blasted from its orb became more frequent as it floated around the room, but alas; Argent’s Full Moon continued to keep her protected. [break][break]
Now that she didn’t have to worry about the book, Argent charged the Boss, she wasn’t too worried about its laser’s since she was protected from them, weaving left and right between stray shots until finally she was able to attack the monster with an upwards slash. Its robes were torn from the slash and the boss reeled back as Argent caught herself on the ground again. Just a little bit more and this would be over…[break][break]

She was a bit disappointed that no one else was going to challenge the boss with her, but that was okay. As Argent faced the stairway up, she gave herself a rousing slap on the cheeks. She could do this! This knife was beyond handy, and the partial invisibility of her Full Moon phase gave her an extra bit of confidence. [break][break]
Argent began the climb up the stairs. Unlike previous rooms she had visited in this twisted library, the stairs seemed pretty stable and straight forward. There were no extra paths or hidden side-routes along the way, it was just a straight shot to the top of a tower, slightly curving and twisting along the way. Was this meant to be an ominous climb, something to deter those that would face off against the sorcerer? If that were the case… it wasn't going to work on Argent![break][break]
Thinking back to the enemies she had faced so far, it seemed there was a common theme in this “dungeon”. Most video games tend to do that, and the monsters so far all fit the vibe of a library. But more specifically, they were both animated beings. Was the Sorcerer at the top the one that had been controlling them?[break][break]
As the top of the climb finally came into sight, the stairs leveled out to a large set of double doors. Argent took a deep inhale, and pushed, swinging them open with a loud CREEAAK! She boldly marched into the room, ready to settle things one way or another.[break][break]
The room itself was a fairly large area. Every wall was a bookshelf lined with endless books. Four marble pillars rose from the center of the room to the high ceiling, where an elaborate chandelier grimly flickered. In the very center of the room was a rug leading up to a fancy throne, and on that throne sat the Sorcerer. [break][break]
It was a robed figure, bright purples, golds, and blues, sitting on the throne. Skeletal fingers flipped through pages of a book in front of its face, while the other hand spun an azure orb in circles around its palm. The Sorcerer didn’t seem to take notice of Argent as she entered, which only served to make her angry. She growled as she tossed her knife, sending it soaring towards the boss. It lowered its book, finally taking notice and revealing its skull of a head and glowing blue eyes–only for the dagger to hit and bounce back off of it.[break][break]
”YEAH THAT’S RIGHT YOU BASTARD, I’M HERE TO DANCE!”[break][break]
The skeletal Sorcerer clattered off the throne, levitating off the ground as it raised its now-glowing orb into the air. The book it had been reading started to flap its pages, flying ahead to meet Argent just like the first books she had faced off against in this strange new world. The fight was on![break][break]

”Thunder?! Jesus, I haven’t met any magic classes yet!" The man with the bird was full of surprises, but Argent couldn’t help but wonder just how loaded his class was. Magic and a pet?! Lowkey, she hoped she would be able to find a pet like that too- but not a dumb bird! [break][break]
The other man here had a less dazzling method of attack. ”Woah, and that’s a gnarly whip!” She hadn’t seen it before, so it must’ve been the kind of item that could be summoned, unlike her dagger which was always on her person. [break][break]
It seemed like they had made pretty sure work of the spiders around this area. ”Well, I’m gonna see if I can’t find more arachnids to take a stab at. heh. Feel free to follow; with all of us in these mountains, I’m sure we’ll finish this quest quick.” Argent didn’t wait around to find out if the others were sticking with her or not, and started jogging away. [break][break]
She was sure that the mountains held plenty of spiders to fight, so Argent wasn’t too particular about her path. There was a massive, jagged hill nearby that seemed to almost be flying over the woods, so she decided to make her way towards it to see if she couldn’t find a way on top. Sure enough, one side of it had an old ruined stairway curving around the hill towards the top- stairs with spiders crawling along them. [break][break]
Two spiderlings at the base of the stairs, and another three a little bit further ahead. Argent grinned as she tossed her knife in her hand and began dashing towards the enemies. ”HEY BUGS!” The spiderlings jumped around to face her, hissing as one of them took a dagger to the face that she yeeted from the distance. [break][break]
The second spider seemed mad about its comrade’s swift defeat and started charging Argent, the two of them dashing right for each other in a game of chicken- a game that Argent jumped out of at the last second, leaping over the monster! Her relentless slash was on cooldown, and her knife was still lodged in the corpse of that other spider, but this was exactly where she wanted to be. [break][break]
”Crescent Slash!” [break][break]
Argent’s body twisted in the air over the spider, her leg falling down in an arc with a silvery trail behind it to collide with the spider and send it reeling away, lifeless. [break][break]

Argent knew her plan was a little bit out there, but… it worked! The bird swooped down and ripped apart one of the spiders, leaving one less monster for her to deal with. She was ready to jump into the fight herself, when suddenly someone else appeared. ”O-oh! Wait, is that your bird?!” Argent hadn’t met anyone with a pet like that, but if this new world was supposed to mirror games, it made sense for there to be beastmaster classes. [break][break]
”But no, yeah; I’m working on a quest too. To take out the spiders around here. I guess you are too?” This new guy either wasn’t alone, or coincidentally someone else had found their way into the clearing with them. This new guy was a bit more suspicious to Argent, walking around in an orange jumpsuit of all things. ”Yeah, spider killing.” She kept her dagger in hand for that added little bit of comfort–something that came in handy as a group of spiders hissed and started towards the group. ”Oh shit, I don’t think they’re giving us a break!” [break][break]
Seeing an opportunity to use her new skill, Argent dashed towards a group of three spiderlings. She moved right into the middle of the group, shouting ”Relentless Slash!” as her knife moved in a flash. The skill would let her slash a random number of times against her enemies, so with the first slash she took out the spider to her left, slicing it in two. With the second slash of the ability, she flipped her knife around to slice at a spider to her right, ending its life as the ability ended. ”Only two? Not bad!” [break][break]
Each slash was about as powerful as a regular attack with her knife, but thankfully it seemed as though all of these spiders were one-hit KO. It made sense… in video game terms, it seemed like these were the low level fodder mobs. Argent just hoped there weren’t any bigger, badder mommy spiders nearby. Though spiderlings were all throughout this mountain, she turned to the last one in front of her. It reared back, opening its mouth to hiss or spit at her or something, but she plunged her knife through it before it had the chance. [break][break]

With the statue beginning to lumber her way, Argent saw a book, the same one that her ally had summoned, come flying forward and whack the monster. Her first reaction was “that wasn’t so impressive…” but those thoughts instantly went away as the statue’s pile of books it was toting around fell away. Not only that, but the books now flew over to him and became HIS floating arms! ”W-woah! Incredible!” [break][break]
With the new arms, he took a big swing at the statue, absolutely clobbering the thing with its own arms. How poetic, and in a library of all places! As he whacked and held the statue in place, he called to Argent to try and shatter the monster. ”Say less!” With its movement restricted and lack of arms, Argent charged for the statue, strafing to the side to plunge her blade straight into the back of its torso.[break][break]
As she moved, she felt a change in her being. She felt a little weaker, but was faster, and her body gained a glint to it–it was almost like light was passing straight through her! This must’ve been that “Lunar Phase” mechanic it mentioned when she picked her class. The marble was thick, but the combination of previous attacks and the bonus from her new form let the blade snake its way into a crack. [break][break]
With the blade lodged in its stoney body, there was only one thing left to do. ”Crescent Slash!” Her knife glowed and left a teal trail behind it as she drew it up its body, a diagonal slash across its back that sheared the stone apart. With her ally keeping the statue in place, she was able to activate the backstab bonus of her ability once more. It was enough to cleave the statue clean in two. ”Phew. Good riddance.”[break][break]
As the statue now lay lifeless (even more so than before!) another wall split apart in the room. Behind this one was a new set of stairs, going, stoney steps lined with books that curved upwards towards an unknown destination–though Argent had an idea of where it led. ”Oh, that’s ominous. Like I was saying earlier, though… I think that’s where we need to go to find the boss.”[break][break]
Glancing around to the others that were holed up trying to protect themselves, and the one that helped out in this fight, Argent tightened her ponytail as she thought for a moment. ”I think… I’m going to keep going. Try to fight the Boss. You guys should be safe for now, but if we keep waiting around, it’s just going to keep getting more dangerous. Oh!” She smiled and waved to Spencer. ”I’m Argent by the way, thanks for the help. That book of yours sure is something… Will you be staying behind? I’m sure I could use the help if you’re down.”[break][break]
