Argent was a much more brazen person than many of the people she knew, and she wouldn’t have blamed the guy if he hadn’t followed her. That (thankfully) was not the case. ”Eek, definitely wow!” She was glad not to be alone against this thing, and if he wanted a distraction, she’d give him one. [break][break]
”Yeah, I think I can manage!” The thrown dagger and shout at the monster had drawn its attention to her already, so Argent ran into the room and darted past it. She knew her slash ability got a buff for being behind an enemy, but for now she was just concerned with getting her weapon back. As she picked her dagger back up, Argent slashed at the monster’s leg. It didn’t seem to hurt the thing much, only leaving a scrape against the marble. [break][break]
Immediately, The statue kicked at her with its stoney leg. She tried to block it with her knife, but the impact still put strain on her arms and pushed her back. This thing wasn’t something she could take direct hits from very easily… [break][break]
Argent had no idea what her silent–running ally had in mind, but he must have some idea if he was asking for a distraction. With the statue’s full attention on her, she started backing away again, pulling it away from the crowd in the corner and positioning it so that its back was to everyone else. ”C’mon, you big lump! I’m over here!” [break][break]
If there was anything Argent had learned from her time playing video games with her brother and friends, it was the importance of kiting and good positioning! [break][break]

Listening to the guy speak, Argent had her suspicions confirmed. He had gone through the same thing as her, the class selection, the tutorial warning, all of it. Where she had gotten to be an assassin with a knife, he was a so-called “Silent Collector”, and could summon a book that floated around him. Oddly fitting for the place they were in, to the point that Argent couldn’t help but wonder if this dreamscape was made for the people within it specifically Or, had they been made for the setting?[break][break]
”Woah, well hey, maybe you can whack stuff with it? Those options sound just like what happened to me–” She paused for a moment to recall just what it had said about the tutorial. They needed to beat a sorcerer, and the longer they waited, the harder that would be. “And the tutorial was also something I saw. For as much as my mind keeps telling me this is a dream and I’m not in a video game… Well, all signs point to it being a video game. Classes, tutorials, bosses, all of it.”[break][break]
Argent had plenty of experience in games, and thankfully DPS was the role she had always had the best luck with, so this Lunar Assassin class really fitted her typical playstyle. As for where they needed to go next, she could only speculate.[break][break]
“Bosses are always at the end of the dungeon in games like this, but with how much of a maze this place is, that could be a problem. I think we should go,” Glancing around, it only took a moment to find a set of stairs for the woman to point at. “Up.” The Boss of this “dungeon” was a sorcerer after all, it only made sense for it to be at the top of the tower. It–[break][break]
“NO! LEAVE US ALONE!” Argent’s train of thought was interrupted by someone calling out nearby. As much as she wanted to find that Sorcerer and put an end to all this, she couldn’t just ignore whoever cried out like that. ”Uh oh, sounds like there’s others!” Rushing to the end of her corridor and peering through to the next room, she was left surprised by what was inside ”Aw shit.” [break][break]
Inside the room was a bit more of an open area. It looked like it had been some kind of museum or display room for artifacts and interesting items before all the craziness started, but as it stood now, most of the cases were shattered. In one corner of the room, a group of people had formed a barricade out of upturned tables and cabinets. One of the people hiding there had a spear that they were using to poke with and try to defend the others, but as for WHAT they were defending themselves from…[break][break]
Lumbering on the other side of the barricade was a marble statue. Though the statue itself didn’t have arms in the traditional sense, it instead had a long series of books coming from each shoulder, seemingly held together by some mystical force. Argent didn’t realize it until she saw it move, but well, THE STATUE WAS MOVING. It reared one of its book-arms back before swinging it wide, clattering against one of the barricade’s tables and cracking it in two. Books fell away from the arm as they collided, but soon rose back up to their place. [break][break]
So this was what the commotion she had heard earlier was. Fighting books was one thing, but an Animated Statue?! Argent had no idea if she could take something like that, it looked like it should be a boss in its own right! But if she did nothing, it would take over the barricade. Just like before with the slash, it felt as though her body was moving on its own as she slung her arm forward to send her knife spiraling through the air, striking the statue on its back.[break][break]

After catching herself back on the ground, Argent was ready to take another stab at the floating books and work with these other people to figure out just what was going on, but before she even had the chance to think, her feet fell out from under her. ”Wh-what the hell?!” [break][break]
The library itself was still shifting around, becoming even more of a maze of books and knowledge. The floor that Argent had been standing on had sloped down into a slide, depositing her down into an entirely new corridor. Just as fast as the passage had appeared, it closed up again, leaving her no time to crawl back up to the others she had been with just moments ago. [break][break]
”Oh, come on! Stupid library, what, just ‘cuz I took out one of the monsters?!” She kicked the bookshelf next to her in frustration, letting out a small “ow” before turning to figure out her next step. She didn’t have to think for long before she heard someone call out, a voice different from the two people she was with earlier. Although people had disappeared earlier, it seemed like there were multiple groups trying to make their way through the library. Argent hoped the two from before would be okay, but with no way to backtrack to them, it was all she could do to keep moving forward. [break][break]
With her lunar knife in hand, Argent made her way towards this new person. She kept an eye out for more flying books along the way, but in doing so noticed another person running towards the cry for help. Strangely enough, she couldn’t hear him as he ran, but given the context of the situation she figured he was another person trying to figure things out. ”HEY!” [break][break]
”You also investigating? I already ran into some monsters so it might be dangerous… but let’s check it out together.” Argent didn’t want to drag anyone along with her if she was going to be rushing into a potentially dangerous situation, but then again this WHOLE LIBRARY was a dangerous situation. It seemed like it would be in people’s best interest to try and stick together as much as they could. ”I got a knife and an “Assassin” class when the library changed like this though, so I can fight them at least. Did you?” [break][break]

As she moved into the forest proper, it didn’t take long for Argent to find exactly what the villager had warned her of. She already had dealt with the occasional monster here and there, but these Spiderlings looked a bit different than she expected; they were absolutely MASSIVE compared to the spiders she was used to–the size of a basketball–but the strangest thing about them was the way they moved around. She first found a small group of two of them, and was surprised to see one of the spiders take to the air with a long string of web floating above it. The way the wind carried it up and away almost reminded her of a balloon, or a dandelion–though at least like those, the spider didn’t seem to be in control of where the wind took it. [break][break]
Flying spiders was not on her list of things she had thought to find out here in the mountains, but with just one enemy in front of her, Argent decided to take action. She pulled her lunar knife into her hand and dashed forward straight for the spiderling, lunging to sink the blade straight into its cephalothorax. Plain strikes with her dagger weren’t as powerful as her Crescent Slash, but even just a regular attack was enough to take one of these spiders out. As long as she avoided large groups and went after them one by one, this quest shouldn’t be that difficult at all. [break][break]
When glancing back to the sky to try and spot where that other arachnid had floated off to, Argent noticed that she wasn’t the only one hunting spiders. Instead of a spider floating around up in the air, there was a big ass bird flying around. ”Aw shit.” Argent realllllly wasn’t a fan of birds like that, and although she knew she could take out the spiderlings, a big bird like that was a different story. [break][break]
She’d have to be wary of the bird, but at least by watching it she was able to find another little nest of spiders. Argent didn’t want to strike while it was still hovering around, but she DID have a plan to take out two birds with one stone. Or well, one bird with a bunch of spiders. Instead of hiding in the bushes, she decided to hop right out and try to goad them all into getting into a fight. [break][break]
”Hey, bird! Want some spiders?! You’ll have to beat me to them!” Argent had learned that her Class, despite being DPS oriented, had more tools than just raw damage. As she fought, it let her cycle through “moon phases”, and currently she was in her Crescent phase–meaning that even if they managed to get a hit in on her, she at least had a health buff to give a bit more protection![break][break]

Even though she had her phone back now, it still hadn’t come back online. It turned out the library wasn’t the only place that had changed, but the entire world–or at least, what she had seen of it so far. The landscape too had been twisted and distorted, with wild mountains now filling the landscape. Most people were gone, and the few that she had come across were just trying to survive and make sense of this new gamified planet they lived on.[break][break] Thankfully, Argent felt like she was doing a pretty good job surviving so far. All the deserted stores made food and supplies pretty easy to come across, and though that would change in the coming months and years if things stayed like this, it was more than enough for her to be able to move around for now. Many of the people she had come across had decided to bunker down and start trying to make livable shelters, places to farm and keep safe from the monsters outside, but Argent herself HAD to keep moving. Both in body and mind she was restless, and she was going to be until she saw Auri again. [break][break] Maps were a little more useless than before with how different the land was now, but they still provided a general enough direction for her to move from city to city successfully. Argent was just about to start her trek out of one town when one of the people who still lived there stopped her. [break][break] “Y-you’re strong enough to survive out there r-right? Could you kill some of the spiders in the forest? I-I don’t really understand it yet, but it’s letting me offer a “quest” to get rid of them, so I’m asking anyone that comes through…”[break][break] After he spoke, Argent got another pop up in her face, just like when she first picked her class out. Just like they said, it was a quest to start killing spiders that were popping up in the area before they grew too big in numbers. The more she experienced this new world, the more ways she found out it was like a video game. Whenever she played a game, Argent ALWAYS did all the side quests she could find–some people avoided them to rush through the story, but she wasn’t one of those people. Argent wasn’t one to get unnerved easily, but this place was really giving her the creeps. She couldn’t really say she had been through anything like this before- This wasn’t the kinda thing that just randomly happened all the time! The worst part of it all was that she was alone, but thankfully, it wasn’t long before she was able to meet up with others. [break][break]
The first man she ran into was someone she heard before she saw. Argent made her way to him as soon as his voice rang out through this book-filled maze, finding ”Oh god there actually ARE other people here, that’s a relief. I guess you guys don’t know what happened either, do you? One second I’m on a computer, and the next thing I know everything looks like this.” She waved her arms, using her knife to point up at the long shelves and strange place they were in.[break][break]
”Did it ask you guys to pick a class too? I think I’m an Assassin now, I picked that one and got this knife. The blade made her feel a little bit more comfortable here. If they were supposed to beat some “Sorcerer”, then yeah, she was glad to have a weapon with her. If this was like a video game dungeon though, then didn’t that mean they would have to fight mobs..?[break][break]
Almost as though in response to her thoughts, their little group was interrupted by the sound of pages fluttering as a trio of books suddenly fell from the shelves. ”A clue..?” Argent moved to try and pick one up, but before she reached it, they started floating, flapping their backs like wings and circling like vultures. ”Oh shit, these things want to fight, don’t they? I dunno how much a goddamn BOOK is gonna hurt me, but I might as well test this out!” She remembered the name of the ability it said she could use, and that it was buffed when she attacked something from behind. This “class” of hers was really playing into that assassin theme, wasn’t it? [break][break]
Brandishing her dagger, Argent quickly ran behind one of the animated books, jumping up and slashing at it once she felt like she was behind it. ”Crescent Slash!” Though she hadn’t fought with her knife before, these movements all felt fluid and natural to her; a silvery trail followed her blade mimicking a crescent moon. By the time she fell back to the ground, the book did the same, though in its case it had been cut cleanly in two. [break][break]

Did he really try to get past the password so much that it ran out of battery?! That sucked so much, but at least now that she had her stuff back, Argent could slow down and actually try to get back to people. “People”, pfft- really, it was just her brother she needed to get updated on.[break][break] It wasn’t like she was in town and could just stop by to check in on Auri, but she was extremely uncomfortable with how long it had been since she checked in with him last. It had been her hope that getting the phone back would solve that problem and she could just respond to however many texts he had left her, but considering her situation, there was little else she could think of to do than just hopping on one of the public computers at this town’s library. ”Ughh, why’s it so damn slow?!” [break][break] Ignoring the groans of the people at the computers around her, a smile crept across Argent’s face as the loading screen finally completed. The smile quickly faded away though at what followed: a blank screen with the words: "I like Gold better  ”[break][break] ”Wh-what the hell? Hey, did yours…” Argent tried to ask the person across from her if they had a similar issue at their PC, but strangely enough, the girl that had been there earlier was gone now. Not only her, but looking around the room, it seemed like EVERYONE in this part of the library had vanished. That was beyond creepy, on top of how weird it was that the PC would give her a message seemingly targeted at Argent specifically… people always loved to make puns about her and her brother like that.[break][break] She wasn’t the type to sit around and hide away when stuff got spooky like this, and wasted no time hopping out of her seat to try and figure out what was going on. As she did, however, another message popped up- only this one was right in front of her face, not on the computer. It was asking her to pick a class…[break][break] ”Huhh?? Ah shit, I must’ve fallen asleep waiting for that damn thing to load!” Argent slapped herself in the face a few times to try and wake up, since that always worked for her in dreams. This time though… nothing. She was in the same spot, with the same screen in front of her. ”Well, I mean, if I have to pick something, of course it’s gonna be the Assassin.” She played her fair bit of games growing up, and loved showing them to her brother anytime she got really invested in one. It was funny to see him try and get the hold of stuff like that, but she was always patient with him to help him learn how to play and show any neat tips and tricks she knew. [break][break] A slew of new pop ups flooded Argent’s vision after selecting the Lunar Assassin option, explaining features of this “Class” and how it worked. She also found herself in possession of a pretty dagger, one that felt comfortable in her hand, almost like it was made just for her. The final pop-up was a bit different than the others though, giving her an objective instead of just listing things that she could apparently do now.[break][break] [TUTORIAL] LIBRARY OF BEGINNINGS[break]

Argent's knife found its way into her arms while she was still young. She KNEW her parents wouldn't let her anywhere near something so "dangerous", especially with how they thought of her. It was at the park one day that she found it, a little folding blade with a simple snake engraved on the handle, just barely hidden behind one of the benches. No doubt it had fallen from someone's pocket, and with how simple it was she doubted they'd be looking for it- she snatched it up in an instant, certain that no one else had seen.[break][break]
She kept it a secret from everyone but her brother, and didn't really do much with it besides carve "GG" into things when she saw the chance. Just having it in her pocket was empowering, a small little bit of proof that, yeah, she really COULD do what she wanted and have a life away from what her parents would want- not that she thought she crossed their minds to begin with. Argent had never felt the pressure to to be perfect in her life, not to do well in studies or even just to be someone. Most of what she learned in life, she attributed to herself, to her own abilities. Her parents were around, but she never really felt like they were present in her life. It was like she was just an after thought, the Silver medal to her twin's Gold. He was the one they fawned over, always encouraging him to be perfect and giving him whatever his little heart desired. She pitied him for it. While they were younger it was a source of grief, but as they grew Argent learned to take her freedom in stride.
