[attr="class","tristanf"] [attr="class","tristanf2"]Tristan remembers a hardware store he used to walk by. They’d have this pile of used junk laid out in front. It ranged from music boxes to bedside lamps; every once in a while, he’d pick up a small thing or two to give to Parker. They never lasted long, but to see a smile on his brother’s face, even if only temporarily, was enough. The store had a TV running behind a glass screen everyday. The owner seemed to be a fan of films from an era before Tristan - he was an older gentleman, after all. There was one particular movie that he put on more often than the others, and Tristan would stop to see a few scenes every now and then. Distinctly he remembers an artificial red sky, flooded by alien spaceships. That is what he is reminded of now, when a shadow of a UFO looms overhead. A ray of light is beamed down, dramatically woven with coasting rings that seem to flow upwards. Just in front of him, the skunk ape caught in the beam is left helpless as it is sucked up into the strange disc.
Was this the work of another player? Likely not. There are multiple of these aircraft. and subsequently multiple skunk apes being pulled up into the air. Some players are caught up in it too, and their confused shouts call for Tristan’s attention. Even the giant skunk ape stops fighting to watch its comrades get lifted off the ground. It seems this is the bigger threat now.
Tristan keeps running, followed by the barrier user. He throws a slinger at an ape that is too busy looking up. In retaliation it hastily swings at Tristan’s head with ample time for him to avoid it. After doing so, he launches his foot straight into the groin of the monster. It jumps in pain, only to be met with a barrier launching straight down from above its head, knocking it unconscious.

Right now, though, there is no reason to deny help. Almost instantly accepting the party invite, he increases his pace once again. Tristan runs to the side of Panya and further out, attempting to approach one of the six imps in front of them. He starts his assault, following the newcomer who had somehow managed to hit all of the demonic creatures at once. Just before he reaches them, a sudden barrage of lightning falls from the sky and onto each imp - leaving them dazed. However, the player was struck as well - whether this was on purpose or not, Tristan does not know, but he might as well make use of the chance. His sneakers start to glow. Taking the opportunity, he throws a slinger at the closest one, making contact right at the center of its face. Tristan follows up by sliding forward, with one leg outstretched, only to spring right up at the end when he is directly in front of the imp. His knee sinks itself into its stomach effortlessly with the speed he had accumulated from his earlier motions. A burst of barely visible white energy follows Tristan’s attack, striking the imp’s stomach a second time. It slumps down onto the ground, a pit in its body left behind like a burn wound. Another pair of imps, two of the remaining five, upon noticing the death of their friend, charges towards Tristan. He isn’t the type to shout for help - but he for sure needs it right now. They approach recklessly, swinging their claws at him twice. By instinct, however, he manages to redirect all of them by maneuvering his body so that they barely manage to even graze him. He breaks through a gap between them, so that he is almost back where he started, now slightly in front of Panya.
Notes: blessed sneakers are activated, increasing Tristan's SPD to B rank for 3 turns.
Tristan deals C rank DMG to one imp using one of his slingers.

It stretches much further out than Tristan could reach with a short sprint. He guesses that if they were going to be working together, he might as well just reveal his abilities as well. He gives the usual brief spiel: ”I run, kind of fast.” There isn’t much more to describe about his class - that was practically all he did. Just like he was doing now, downhill. He had rushed into things without thinking, prioritizing getting out of the cold more than anything else. His companion’s apprehension made sense though - they probably would not be able to take down too many, considering their sizes and bulk. At least, though, they should be able to do enough to retrieve one heart for each of the two of them. “I’ll herd them into a corner,” he says, pointing towards one end of the field slightly narrower than the others, with slopes surrounding it hopefully too steep for the frosthearts to climb. He does not say anything more, knowing the other person was experienced enough to know what to do. Accelerating downhill, he slides onto the snowy field. Running in and placing himself near the back of the herd, he throws a slinger at one of the beasts, evoking a deep cry from it. This brings them into a frenzy - running blindly from the direction of Tristan, they generally head towards the corner Tristan pointed out earlier. It is a good thing they are rather mindless - if not, he’d already be trampled to death.

[attr="class","tristanf"] [attr="class","tristanf2"]A larger ape with a scar on its brow takes notice of Tristan, but he does not slow down. It reels its arm back, readying a haymaker of extreme might. The monster is clumsy and big - this was going to be easy to dodge. As he gets close, however, Tristan forgets that he is running on sand. When he attempts to shift his weight to dodge, he slips slightly. He manages to avoid the bulk of the punch, but the creature’s fist does graze his forehead quite badly. Rolling forward to sustain his momentum, he shouts to the barrier maker: ”Wall! Now!” On cue, understanding Tristan’s intentions, the player reaches his hand out to form a barrier in front of Tristan, behind the skunk ape’s exposed back. Tristan springs himself onto the barrier, taking a few steps and then jumping off in an attempt to kick the ape in the back of the head. It notices, but before it can react it is already too late. Tristan’s sneaker embeds itself directly in its cheek, sending it to the ground before evaporating like the trash around it.
His forehead is bleeding, but there is no time to waste - he needs to keep his flow. Activating runner’s high to hopefully heal up a bit of his injury, he continues running. There are fewer apes than before now, by quite a large margin. The bulk had been taken care of, leaving only the tougher ones in the middle. The trash has accumulated into a few large piles, with some apes taking sentry positions throwing trash down from atop these mounds. The largest ape - most likely the leader - is engaged in battle with a trio of players: one with a large hammer, one casting lightning magic and one supporting from behind. They seem capable enough of taking care of it. Tristan’s duty was not there - he needed to take care of the stragglers. Checking behind to see if Barrier-boy is still following - he is - he sprints towards the next monster in sight.

From what he notices, the closer to the center of the horde, the bigger and stronger they looked, with the large one directly in the middle having an especially fierce appearance. He wouldn’t be able to do this alone. Just as the thought comes to him, he hears a whooshing sound to his left, signifying the formation of another green barrier. This time it is solid, as evidenced by the smushed face of the skunk ape on the other side of it. From the looks of it, it was running towards Tristan. Saved by the mysterious barrier creator again. ”Finish it off!” he hears from behind him. Wasting no time, he does exactly that. As he sprints towards it at full speed, he jumps with his knee forward. Just in time, the barrier dematerializes, leaving just the dazed monster behind it. His knee makes full contact with its face, sending a sizable amount of saliva flying back before its body disappears like the previous one. Rolling back into action as he lands, Tristan continues his dash towards the center.
Behind him, the player with the barrier abilities follows him. Although he wasn’t as fast as Tristan was, the range at which he could utilize his skills more than made up for that. Throughout the whole beach, battles are being waged - the rave area had become an all-out battlefield, and the sanctuary he had planned to sit at earlier was now empty. Players all over are assisting in the extermination of the apes, with the higher-leveled-looking ones more condensed towards the center. Tristan isn’t that confident that he’d survive that deep inside the swarm, but any effort would help end this so he could get his long-awaited vacation.

[attr="class","tristanf"] [attr="class","tristanf2"]Tristan rushes towards the site of impact, where all these monsters had seemed to appear from. The first thing he notices is the smell - they are rancid, worse than when Parker had soiled himself in his sweaty clothes. He isn’t sure what to make of the fact that that memory had been recalled. The skunk apes screech in an erratic orchestra, each singing their own signature tone. More importantly, they seemed to have a method of generating trash - in each ape’s wake there is a trail of garbage - empty cans, ripped newspapers, random wires and batteries, fast food chain bags and the like. The only threat is no longer just the monsters. Now, they had to take care of this garbage-pile-to-be.
He continues running, ready to dodge a dumpster flying at him overhead, only for some sort of green, soft, meshy barrier to form underneath it, catching it firmly. He looks around to spot another player with his hand outreached. Silently giving him a nod, Tristan is slightly relieved to know he wasn’t in this alone. Closer to the source of the smell now, he approaches the creature nearest to him. Deftly he throws a slinger towards it, chipping its right shoulder. It looked like it was just about to throw another piece of trash to add to the beach. Its arm subsequently drops, and Tristan charges it with his elbow as it turns to look at him. As it dissipates into the air, he notices some articles of trash on the ground disappear as well. Maybe that was the solution - kill all the apes.

The overwhelming cold is quite a bit more than he was used to, even in the cold nights of the concrete streets. Strangely though, aside from the sheer feeling of the temperature, there are no other side effects - Tristan isn’t shivering, or breathing heavily. Perhaps this was one of the boons of being a player. He approaches the girl - most probably the other participant of this mission - from behind, keeping pace with his hands in his pockets. She seems to be half-heartedly listening to something, but he can’t tell what. It doesn’t matter to him, though - what matters is completing the mission and getting back to warmth. ”Hey,” he says at a moderate volume, just loud enough for her to hopefully hear, ”Let’s go?” He is a distance away from her shoulder now, ever slightly accelerating. The sooner they got out of here, the better. In front of them is a slope that gradually levels out into a small snowfield. From this vantage point, Tristan can make out the shapes of a few four-legged creatures - they resemble yaks, but their horns, made of some sort of hardened ice, radiate a faint blue glow. Their fur is rugged and somewhat long, some creatures taking on a shade of bluish-white, and some a dull brown. They seem passive enough, walking straight in a loose formation towards the other end of the field. They might have caught them during migration - Tristan has no idea if this would make it harder or easier. He starts moving down the slope, awkwardly having to start running to keep up with the changing gradient of the ground to prevent himself from falling.

mission: attack of the killer skunk apes[attr="class","tristanf"] [attr="class","tristanf2"]In his whole life, Tristan had never been to the beach. Although the lack of opportunity was one of the main contributing factors, it was also that he had no desire to ever visit one. He was content living life in the concrete - if anything, it provided a strong foothold. Running on sand would only trip you at some point. Regardless, he had ended up on Nadir Beach. News had been popping up through the system of its appearance, and like many others it had attracted Tristan as well, especially with the ease of access now available via the system.
It isn’t what he expected. His mind was set on having a small vacation from all the chaos the system had wrought upon him recently. A few beachgoers, a picnic mat on the sand, and a juice in hand - no. Instead, it feels like he had walked through the wrong door. Yes, there is sand and water, but apart from that it all looks strange. Maybe he had ended up in the wrong section of the beach. People dressed like they were attending a rave dance to older party music - music that is blasted everywhere through the giant speakers bombarded across the place. This was the opposite of a relaxing day out.
However, there are some people who are more like-minded - they sit at the edge of the fray, settling down in the sand as if purposefully trying to get submerged whole in it. He had wanted to find some space to loosen up by himself, but this was the next best option. Approaching the area but not greeting the people nearby, he strolls down a good fifteen meters from the main cluster of beachgoers. The music is still audible here, but not enough to truly be a nuisance. But just as he almost reaches his perfect sitting spot, a system notification pops up. MISSION: ATTACK OF THE KILLER SKUNK APES. What did he expect? It was only right for the system to give him an impromptu quest as he is about to settle down. Some people - presumably players like himself - look towards what he assumes are their notifications as well. It seems this mission is one of a larger scale, as there are quite a few people who seem to be involved.
A speaker comes flying at him from the sky - even with his reflexes he only barely manages to dodge it before it lodges itself well into the sand. Looking towards the direction it came from, he sees a horde of strange creatures resembling apes and also somehow skunks wreaking havoc across the whole beach. It seems this was today’s problem to solve.

Still though, he wasn’t sure if it was the right place - Esther, the woman who he had been an accomplice to in their recent heist, had invited him through the system to this place. The more he thought about it, though, the more fitting it seemed. What more suitable a place than the shadow of a bright city for a criminal of her reputation? The sounds and ruckus gets louder as he descends the stairs. The door is left slightly ajar which allows him to slide in with just a bit of accidental contact with the door. The noise is everywhere now - laughter in between heated conversation, glasses clinking and pool balls clacking against one another. Tristan walks through a puff of smoke, holding his breath as he does. After getting lost and overwhelmed for a bit, he lands in front of the door labeled with Esther’s name. He knocks twice. Entering the office, he nods to the woman residing inside. ”You called?"

Using the ability had always felt like second nature to him; he never really put much thought into it. How much of the system had already been ingrained into his being? “Must be it,” he responds, eyes looking upwards as if in thought. As Esther explains her plan, Tristan realizes how out of touch he is - he’s never put in any effort to plan his own ‘heists’. Everyday was a battle for survival, and any opportunity he saw, he took. There was no time for premeditation. As long as there was enough to put food on the table and his brother got to eat, nothing else mattered. It seems the woman had already preoccupied herself with the planning beforehand. It sounds simple enough, but only someone with experience could pick out the little details like this. Intricate timing and subtlety was never Tristan’s forte, but for the sake of completing this mission, he would have to try his best. “Right. I got it,” he says with a voice half-filled with confidence. As they make their way closer to the farmhouse, chickens in tow, the ground gets noticeably more solid - a relief to Tristan. Upon hearing the heedless clucking of the monsters, the farmer carries himself out of the front door to greet them. “Welcome, welcome!” he says with a smile and unbeatable vigor. Tristan already felt bad enough, and now that he knew they were robbing a nice man? He would love to pretend he was not involved in this crime. But life isn’t perfect - especially in the current state of the world. Just at the door, Tristan is met with a picnic-style table to his left, neatly covered by a tablecloth. An empty glass bottle sits on it. Taking the risk, he utilizes his speed to pull down the fabric - the bottom of the bottle spins a little, slightly raising only to settle back down with a single clink. Hastily scrunching the tablecloth up in his hand, he passes it to Esther behind the farmer’s back. The only task left now is the keep the farmer from going back in. Tristan pats the rump of one chicken slightly more than gently, causing it to enter some frenzied fever, as if reliving its recent past. Immediately the farmer runs to keep it under control, and so does Tristasn himself to keep from looking too conspicuous. In the chaos, he eyes Esther - it was now or never.

[attr="class","tristanf"] [attr="class","tristanf2"]As Tristan sprints in his wide arc, the man seems to say something directed towards him but the wind rushing at his ears prevents him from making out the words. What he does hear, however, is the explosion that seemed to take place on the enemy’s body. Seeing his new gigantic form though, he wonders if that really affected him at all.
Although the fight has already begun, Tristan is too far away to do anything. The behemoth launches himself and crashes in front of the self-proclaimed-tactician girl. While the monster is occupied with the main group, he assumes his best bet is to make a run towards the target’s flank. Continuing his run, he accelerates ever so slightly so that he is now behind where the behemoth is facing, albeit still quite a distance away. Only the echoes of the roar make their way to Tristan, sending a shiver down his spine. He needs to go faster. Hopefully his companions for the day would manage to fend for themselves. Maybe he shouldn’t have run off so early - it’d be at least a few more seconds until he could get close to the confrontation.

He’d always known that every time he allowed himself on these missions there would always be the risk of not making it back out. He had never been to Ender Island before, but he had heard of the forge that resides on it - the forge, currently surrounded by fire and flame whose fuel was the town itself. At a distance in front of Tristan stands a man wearing the bare minimum of what could be called a shirt. The ease of his stride seems to contrast with the surrounding atmosphere - his hands are up, defenseless, yet he still seems impenetrable, even with how exposed he is. Tristan hesitates. There are others on scene as well - surely they’d know what to do. It’d be a death sentence to run in straight, especially seeing how much damage had been done to the buildings around the forge. Tristan starts to pace in an arc, keeping his distance from the man at the center of his trajectory. The main street is large enough for him to build up speed comfortably. As he continues his run, he realizes some of the debris around the man aren’t debris at all - they are bodies. His brows furrow as he registers the severity of the situation: if he sprinted straight in, he could very well be another corpse on the pile.

Using all of his accumulated speed, he charges straight at the unoccupied troll. He is too fast for it to react - within a split second it is flying through the air, landing with an impact on its friend, sinking its hand even deeper into the girl’s stinger. Tristan hasn’t stopped; driving towards the two trolls again, he throws his fist out with all of his might right at the stomach of the troll in front. The shock reverberates through to the other troll, taking it out for good as well. That was at least what one could expect from a blow fully infused with his speed, considering how fast he was going. It is only when his knees start to buckle that he feels his exhaustion. He had been running on adrenaline the whole time, with no time to stop moving. It seemed to be over for the most part now, though. The sounds outside have quieted down as well – the other players must have done their job too. “You good?” He asks the girl. It wasn’t out of manner - he is actually concerned, her screams from earlier still blasting through his ears. After all, he was still new to this ‘world’. He had no clue what the system he could do to people - had the girl’s mental state been altered by it? Or was that really just her? Letting his body fall against the nearest wall, he sits down. legs extended. If this was how the rest of his life was going to be, then he’d just have to survive crawling through the mud. It is no different than before.

One of his members of the party for the mission - it seems he wasn’t too early after all. With the warehouse still some distance away, he slows down to a measured walk so she can keep up with not too much difficulty. Despite how it looked, Tristan was not at all intending to enter that cursed building all by his lonesome. A little surveillance never hurt anybody.
”Relax. I wasn’t planning to,” he responds to her hurried warnings. She gives her name - if it weren’t for her timid demeanor, he would not have done the same. After all, it was his instinct to keep anything he had to himself, even if it was just a word others called him by. “Tristan.”
As they inch ever closer to the presumed-to-be devil’s lair, another addition to the group joins them. Even though the objective was stated in the mission brief, he is clueless about it. Tristan does not show it, but it irritates him slightly - if they were on the same page, they could have gotten started on the same foot. The faster they got rid of the pests, the faster he could be out and gone from this damned place. Ignoring the question, he gives a brief nod, and then a glance towards Panya, hoping she could fill in the details for the newcomer.
Soon, at the perimeter of the warehouse, it feels like he passes an intangible border of some sort - the air becomes still, and the distant noises of the city are muted. “Quiet,” he whispers, raising his arm upwards slightly as a sign of caution. His foot had landed on what he could only assume to be flesh. The same flesh that protrudes extends from each wall of the building. He can feel the red ooze attempting to stick to his sneakers. Taking a moment to correct himself and get his foot off of the fiendish spot, he nods towards his companions for the day.

[attr="class","tristanf"] [attr="class","tristanf2"]Tristan’s wall interrupts Esther’s game of tag with her new best friend. He’s almost back at the start of the wall now - just a few more steps. The population of animals inside the ‘enclosure’ has diminished greatly, but there are still more than enough to satisfy their quota for three. The chickens that had managed to escape are far gone now, clucking for their lives. He’d been too focused on making his lap - or perhaps too reliant on his party - to notice either of their feats, apart from the sudden bump he felt below his feet and the passing image of a woman riding a chicken with glory.
As his shoes lose their glow, he finally steps back at the beginning of the wall he had created. Immediately he jumps down into the circle, urging his teammates. “Quick! Before the walls crumble!” He had failed to mention that this was no permanent structure - it wouldn’t be that easy. At least now with their more limited space, the animals would be easier to civilize.
Only now does he spot Lafey’s knightly appearance, her mount an overgrown chicken in the stead of a steed. She’d probably have an easier time than Esther. He remembers she had already used the collar she was assigned. Without another, it’d be impossible for her to tame it, and who knows how much longer she could stay on the creature. Between steps, Tristan materializes his collar item. Throwing it like a frisbee - it has considerable weight to throw it comfortably - he aims it right at Lafey’s shoulder level. It cuts through the air, flying straight at her.
Without delay, he turns and dashes towards the chicken that Esther had chased down. Either out of complacency or reservation for her party, she had stepped away from it. With a few lively, hasty kicks of dirt, the monster is back on its feet. Launching itself in the direction furthest from both Tristan and Esther, it leaves mud on its trail.
She is the only one who still has a collar. By any means, Tristan needs to make sure it ends up on the chicken’s neck. With a heavy step, he shifts his momentum into the same trajectory the chicken is running in. Parallel to the wall. Perfect. He catches up, running side by side with it now. Following a grunt, his elbow is tucked in as he crashes the whole of his weight into the chicken, knocking it into the concrete for a second time. It topples down from the impact. Rolling into a stop, Tristan turns and glares at Esther, beckoning her to rush and get the job done.
