It was never going to be fair, was it? There’s a stack of bills by the door and the fridge doesn’t light up anymore. Tristan’s brother sleeps on a makeshift bed put together with their old clothes. It’s dark out and the air is cold. Their room has no nightstand - but there’d be no family photo to put on it, either. It’d been the two of them for as long as he could - wanted to - remember. And Tristan sighs because he knows it’s time again. His feet are already on the asphalt as the door closes itself shut, and only god knows where he’s off to. Anything to keep Parker’s stomach full.

Anything to keep Parker’s stomach full.

Tristan runs: it’s wild, it’s feral, it’s raw. He vaults over concrete and slips under steel. He’s been caught in the chase. But it’s no unfamiliar feeling. He’s got two wallets in hand, belonging - not anymore -to some unfortunate souls. Tristan had been taught morals and ethics, but he had learned to throw them away. After all, if he was gonna go out, it wasn’t gonna be starving.

He’s creating distance. The fools can’t catch up. He feels the rush of the wind in his eyes, ephemerally averted as he turns back to gauge their speed. There was no need - he knew he was way faster. Tristan needed the money - but somewhere, someplace, he also knew he enjoyed the thrill.

Granted, it wasn’t much. It was no full-course dinner. Just chicken and orange juice. Still, Parker smiles through, his lips increasingly getting more stained by his careless eating. His brother was happy.
