[attr="class","inner"]         The smoke dissipates, leaving in its wake the lifeless cadavers of the creatures his partner had been fighting. While shifting his weight carefully to tread the perimeter of the boss monster, Tristan spots the proficiency with which Dantalion hunts. His familiars - or whatever kind of apparition they were - pursue the newly appeared squad of monsters, working their way through from skin to guts efficiently like cogs in a machine, with much added violence.

         A shadow abruptly engulfs Tristan's view from above as he turns back to see a swinging arm. To dodge it, he responds with a giant leap to the side of his assaulter, springing almost straight forward with only a relatively small vertical trajectory compared to the distance he travels. Landing with a roll, shoulder cleanly making contact with the ground first, he recovers, previous velocity unchanged. It was the wrong move, though; when he regains line of sight of Xanta Klauz, its arms are already on the way down. Death, he'd known, had the tendency to arrive fast. But Dantalion was faster - like a blur, prancing into view, his weapons intersect to parry the brute strike.

         With just enough time for his body to register the instructions, Tristan prepares to follow through with them. "Right," he speaks firmly from behind Dantalion. He takes two steps, perpendicular to the monster. On the next third step, a path of concrete, resembling an urban cityscape's pavement, materializes beneath his feet. It continues to form as he speeds up, vertically upwards and in a spiral coalescing towards the head of the monster. Xanta Klauz attempts to follow his movements, but its heavy body does not comply, leaving only its wild eyes to track him. Tristan could cover the high ground. Sneaking a glance downwards as he orbits, he waits for Dantalion to take advantage of the opportunity before it is his turn to strike.

[attr="class","inner"]         A primal response envelops Tristan, almost stopping him in his tracks. As the reverberations from the roar of the giant beast echo past him, it takes everything to keep his legs moving. Dantalion's orders help to snap him out of his shock. He was right: the creature may have been big, but it was equally slow. Every beat of its boots corresponded to Tristan taking three or four whole strides. As long as he remains careful, he'd probably last long enough for the veteran to finish it off. In fact, he probably did not have to last very long, judging from the euphony of cries from inside the smoke cloud.

         It does not take long before Tristan realizes that it is headed straight for him. As he tackles another stray goblin back into the smoke, he primes himself for the attack to come. The giant seemed to have no regard for its alllies - it trudges through the bodies of the fallen goblins that had been dispensed from the smoke, its feral eyes holding nothing but an eagerness to bludgeon its next target. As it gets close enough, it readies its adorned arm, and wildly brings the whole of its weight down with it. Tristan feels the wind against his cheek as he narrowly dodges the fist to the side. He got lucky this time; his timing needs to be better. He'd never thought a few inches to be so important, now that it was the difference between living or becoming ground meat.

         The fist is embedded into the ground for a slight moment, accompanied by another ferocious warcry. This time, it does not startle Tristan, who bolts past the monster's ankles. He needed to hold its attention. Pivoting around, first with his head, then his hip, then his legs, he runs in a circular arc towards the arm opposite to the one that just attempted murder on him. Instinctively he thought staying close to the giant, no matter how counterintuitive it was, would pose less of a threat. He aimed to run under its own shadow and, if all goes well, limit its vision over him. He'd easily see if another attack was coming as well. For a moment, his eyes turn to the smoke. Whatever was happening in there, it was violent - he would be a fool to make an enemy out of Dantalion.

[attr="class","inner"]         Fireworks? Smoke? Something is about to happen, and Tristan realizes it. But what he does understand is that he was weaker than Dantalion - it wasn't something he'd contest. Surviving meant understanding one's own strengths and flaws, even if currently it meant knowing the latter exceedingly outweighed the former.

         Tristan nods in response to the instructions he is given. It seemed to him that the man had done this a lot; the swift, interlinked motions of his hands reveal that. Somehow, it becomes harder for Tristan to see him. The only thing visible now is the dense smoke cloud that had enveloped the monsters.

         He springs into action, following the orders received. He sprints towards the left side of the smoke, eyes trying to focus on whatever is happening inside. There are some brutal sounds - the screeches of prey when faced with a hunter, and the slashes of what he could assume to be Dantalion's weapons.

         As he reaches the perimeter of the cloud, a stray goblin appears from the smoke, walking out backwards, hands flailing - it doesn't see Tristan. With confidence, and his shoulder, Tristan tackles it back into where it came from, and continues running. The monster probably did not take much damage from that attack, but as long as he could get it back into the smoke and keep it disoriented, Tristan considered that a success. His job didn't seem too difficult for now - he had to trust that, as long as they were contained inside, Dantalion could take care of them.

He had been more closed off before to the people he met out of the tutorial, but although he was still unsure about the world, he now knew enough to understand that the act most likely wouldn't pose a risk to him. Dantalion had already revealed his own anyway. Tristan reckoned that even now in the world's current state, advancing with etiquette would be a good idea - especially when one's life is riding on the other.

         "The Fall?" he asks, unsure. It takes a split second for it to click in his mind, not allowing enough time for Dantalion to repeat the question. "Oh - a week, I think." His answer is brief, but he fears it could reveal a lot. A week's worth of time wasn't much compared to the other people who were around. If the system had come into place a year ago like he had heard, he was definitely far from the strongest around. He hoped the man would not mind.

         Tristan emulates Dantalion's traveling mannerisms, following four or five paces behind. He had realized it before, but the man's patience displayed that he was indeed experienced. It took a bit of walking and some observation for Tristan to register that they were following creature tracks.

         The creatures struggle to pry the box open - it makes him wonder what was so important that it needed to be sealed that firmly. It had to be valuable. There is as slight instinctive desire in him to attempt to take a look at what's inside after the job is done. But Tristan wouldn't give in so easily - after all, he wasn't sure that would be good for the purposes of the mission.

         Reflexively, he crouches down following his de facto leader, and quickly but carefully makes his way over to him. He nods subconsciously as an indication that he understands the situation the man is talking about. "I'm not much of a fighter," he says flatly, "the most I can do is distract them."

         His skillsuit wasn't fine-tuned for group fighting - at the level he was now, he'd tire out before he could finish them off. He had belief that Dantalion could come up with some kind of solution. As long as he doesn't die, Tristan is willing to run til his legs burn: it shows in his eyes.

[attr="class","inner"]         The man seemed to be a veteran of life in this new world - he was covered in seemingly quality gear, and had a stride that looked confident to Tristan. Slowing down to a stop, Tristan returns his greeting with a lowering of his eyebrows and a simple "Yeah." This stranger probably isn't someone he should mess with; it didn't take much guessing to see was experienced, and Tristan's years of reading people to survive in the concrete jungle was not to be doubted.

         Tristan quickly glances around him, to spot the critters that are roaming around. Maybe it would be a good idea to enlist the man's help. But could he really be trusted? Tristan deemed him so - after all, with such an explicit system quest, it was difficult to think of another incentive to be approaching a stranger. "Do you mind if I tag along?"

         After all that walking, he finally feels like he's getting closer to the first fallen present. Knowing the whims of the system, it was a given that it'd only get more dangerous, and knowing how weak he was, he needed help.

mission: an island holiday

[attr="class","inner"]         Tristan had caught wind of the event that was happening, and rather quickly made his way to the Draco Islands. His main objective wasn't to celebrate the holiday spirit - he still wasn't quite in the mood for that yet. Since the event was apparently globally announced, he was holding on to the slim chance that his brother was alive and out of his tutorial, and would be making his way here as well. But that was all it was - unfulfilled hope.

         A while after walking through the area he had notices a very strange shift in his surroundings. There is snow where there shouldn't be, paradoxically placed under the beaming sun above. That wasn't the weirdest thing, though. Throughout his brief time here he had already spotted at least three boxes falling from the sky. One would have been uncanny enough. But three?

         Still, he was sure there were going to be more. Now that he had time to mentally prepare, it probably wouldn't distract him as much anymore. The mission was to find these 'presents', after all. But how on earth was he going to achieve that? The distances they were falling from practically made them invisible. No logical way to track them comes to his mind. He continues moving forward briskly, towards the general direction of the most recent package he had seen.

[attr="class","inner"]         Her method of operating was completely different from his. What he sees is feral, unrestrained action. He could never imagine himself letting out a scream that loud regardless of the situation. Tristan speeds up just a little more when he sees the girl get hit straight in the face, He had avoided the trajectory of the trolls while on the way to her - it wasn't a difficult feat though, considering the creatures could not run straight to save themselves.

         As soon as the words left the girl's mouth, Tristan tackles a troll near her, which promptly topples down. He takes a split second to observe his surroundings. Hearing her question, he opts for another choice: "Let's bring them over there!" he calls to her, pointing his arm towards a narrrow alleyway around ten meters away. He did not think there was enough time to explain his abilities, but with a bit of logic and deduction, he assumed she would be able to get the answer to her question from that.

         Without waiting for her answer, hoping she'd follow the plan, he sprints towards the alleyway he mentioned. There were less trolls around now. Hopefully the ones that had dispersed further would be taken care of by other more competent people around the area. For now, Tristan just had to work with this girl to get rid of their share of the problem. He's starting to feel his breath catching up to him, though. They'd better make it quick.

[attr="class","inner"]         More than a year? He had missed out on more than a year? No wonder everything is so unusual. His thoughts immediately race back to his brother again. Was he, perhaps, suspended in time right now? Tristan did not want Parker to have to experience what he did - but there was no way of telling what would be happening to him at this moment. He lets himself get distracted by the instructions and demonstration he is being given.

         He wills his system window into existence with a thought, and a motion of his fingers. At first he is skeptical - as he should be - but that doubt is dispelled as a blue floating screen greets him. "Huh," he lets out a quiet acknowledgement. With some struggling he manages to make it to the store page, which he promptly closes. Having figured it out he believed it would be less troublesome to access it again later and purchase things when he is alone. It is all starting to blend for him. Slowly, somehow he was making sense of this new world.

         As the newcomer appears into view, she seems just as vibrant. His face remains at rest, head turning slightly to catch a vague idea of her appearance. His hands return to his pockets - it was instinctive at this point. After all, it was the most he could do to feel safe.

[attr="class","inner"]         Keeping pace, ever so slightly accelerating, Tristan's eyes shift systematically to scan for any lone trolls other than the two almost immediately in front of him now. He had subconsciously decided that he could only take care of stragglers - his speed would not be able to do anything if he got surrounded. He feels himself getting faster - it's the thrill he's familiar with. The only thing is he wasn't used to running towards the threat. Only from it. But he can't have what he wants. Especially when the two threats are sprinting directly towards him.

         The first troll enthusiastically jumps, mouth outreached, aiming to sink its teeth into Tristan's arms. It is clumsy; he had spotted the motion before the monster even left the ground. With a subtle shift in body weight, and a slight tucking of his shoulder to the back, he avoids the assault completely. He's moving too fast to see if it stuck the landing after, but he knows what comes next. The second troll, now discouraged from mimicking its friend, stands with its guard up. Its feet struggle to stop its own momentum properly, and even to an untrained eye it would be obvious that it was very, very off-balance.

         Smoothly into his next step with a grunt, Tristan raises his knee which heads straight for the troll's face. Its next course of action is to fall down and hope a concussion is the worst diagnosis it could get. The very same moment that his knee made contact, he hears the start of the chain of feral screams from behind him. It could only be the girl.

         Perhaps he was too confident in her abilities. Ultimately she probably was at the same stage as he was - at most, maybe she had come to understand this new world a little more than he had. What he knew was that he was not going to finish this without her power. In other words, if she continues running into the mob, they'd both be dead. Tristan almost shouts something to get her to calm down, but it gets stuck in his throat as he realizes she was in no state to listen. With another pivot, he strains and twists his legs to drive himself towards her. He'd think later - all he needed to do now was get to her.

[attr="class","inner"]         Her words ring in his ears, but are not processed until he hears the splatter from her appendage impaling the creature. He wasn't one to take pride seriously - survival was always the goal, and ego would only get in the way of that. But, somehow, the confidence of the person who just strode past him was starting to convince him that this was not as scary as he made it out to be. After all, if it was that easy to kill one, surely he would find no trouble doing so.

         Tristan's next step places his foot perpendicular to his current direction of movement, and after a slight pause - he feels the tension building in his legs - he springs back towards where he was running from, faster than before. The girl is a few meters in front of him now. Approaching from both of her sides were two adamant trolls, hungry for blood. She seemed to be able to handle herself at least more than he could, but he believed it would be on the safer side to give the warning anyway. "Watch your left!", he shouts, while building momentum towards the monster on her right. The troll only has a split second to turn its head before being met with Tristan's elbow. It stumbles and flounders onto its back - it's not dead, but it won't be getting back in action anytime soon. He does not have time to confirm the kill. It is too dangerous to stop running now.

         Although the trolls are more dispersed now, there are still a lot. He turns, in one smooth motion, in the direction of a pair of stragglers. He takes a slight glance back at the girl out of worry: maybe not for her, but for the monsters walking to their massacre.

[attr="class","inner"]         Tristan had more or less figured out how the waypoints that had come into existence worked. He finds himself now on the outskirts of Los Angeles, a bit closer to home - but only geographically. Still, he did not dare approach the inner parts of the city; it was in his learned programming, to avoid danger - one wrong move and he could lose it all. A terrible thing to happen, especially considering he had his brother in tow to protect.

         Now he walks alone, trailing the edges of the road. He takes it slow - a rare sight to be expected of him. His mind is always in a rush. The paranoia hasn't faded: the mere concept of the system that had materialized into reality had taken a big toll on his mind. After all, the life he was used to was vastly different from this. All he had to think about was getting enough to survive the day. Now, there are monsters running amok and the risk of being kidnapped by a flying dragon is not zero anymore. The balance in his steps is disrupted by a sudden rumbling. Of course - he seemed to never be able to get some silence to himself.

         Emerging from the horizon, figures dyed an unsightly green run towards his direction. Some are faster than others - some walk more unhurriedly, watching as their kin appear from the shadows of abandoned buildings. They shout, and they shout loud. To Tristan, it seems to be nonsense. Not a word can be made from the sounds that were spat out along with their saliva.

         Tristan takes the natural course of action - as if automatic, his legs cycle, directly away from the creatures. There was no way he could deal with that swarm - at least not alone. Even with the abilities he was granted, in his mind, there was not enough of himself that believed he could get out of this alive if he decided to fight.

[attr="class","inner"]         Tristan would never trust strangers he met on the street - let alone the subway. But it seemed the information he was hearing had no reason to be faked. They were apparently in a high-risk zone. The scale of that still did not come intuitively to him - what could that 'risk' imply? He shifts his weight in an uneasy manner. The world he had gotten used to was difficult enough. Now there are floating surfboards and magical deer - and whatever dangers the implication of the risk system could bring to him.

         With the sliding and pushing motions of her fingers, much like someone using a touchscreen interface, Tristan watches the shopping bag being materialized out of nowhere. He remembered seeing system screens during the tutorial too, but he was unaware of how to actually bring up his own. He'd have to figure it out sometime later. It is only when the food is revealed to him that he realizes he is hungry; he had burnt up all of that energy running and climbing and never got a chance to check his condition. But still, he'd rather find something on his own than take the risk. There are no genuine acts in this world.

         He turns to the person beside him at a slight angle. "You can have it. I'm good." It takes a lot of willpower for him to get the words out. That was as polite as he'd get - the environment he was raised in did not exactly cater kindness, after all. He wonders whether it would be alright to tell them his name, but hesitates.
