Once everyone accepted the party invite, Rory was a little surprised to see a new pop-up come his way. While he knew of partying and that it could give buffs, this was the first time he had actually gotten to experience it for himself.[break][break]

With this stat bonus, most of his own stats had reached a new rank, something that surely would come in handy against a big boss like this. His party members received the same buff, and now that they were actually all partied together and fighting a boss, Rory paid attention to what his new allies could do. He already knew some of what Nyke was capable of, but was surprised to learn he could see the enemy's level. Seventeen… that explained why his attack was so strong! Thankfully, Summer was more than happy to play a defensive role here, able to stifle the present’s explosion with a shield that she summoned–an act that also gave Rory a heal! Not only that, but she had summoned a sword as well, so hopefully she’d be able to bring some big damage to the table too.[break][break]
The last guy had some kind of fog emanate from his being once the fight started, though was quick to note that the group would be safe with it there. He seemed to have some kind of bomb to blow up on Santa, and also tossed out the suggestion they got closer to fight him. While ordinarily Rory might not agree with that strategy, the more he thought about, the more he liked that plan here. Santa couldn’t use his explosives as effectively if they were going to hurt itself too, and between his own shield with Coin Flipper and the one Summer had, they would have an easier time protecting each other while they were up close. ”I agree; with all the support we have, we should probably stick close together so we don’t have to move far to shield each other. This boss wasn’t gonna just sit around and let them plot its demise, unfortunately. It switched things up from the present bomb, this time pulling out a comical-looking toy gun. The shots it fired weren’t so comical however. Rory brought his hands up to throw another dice shield in front of himself, and again, Santa’s attack burst right through. The laser burst through his shield and zapped Rory right in his shoulder, though with the party buff and the added protection from his Coin Flipper, it wasn’t as bad as the bomb. (E-Rank worth of Damage stopped & reflected to Santa)[break][break]
Santa tossed its gun aside after shooting at three of the party members, and while he was obviously going to try something else next, Rory decided to roll the dice and activated his Chaos Roller’s core ability against it. He reached his hand out and a 4-sided die would appear over Santa’s head, quickly rolling itself before landing on a 4. ”Uh oh." At least his speed was still debuffed for now, but Rory cringed a little inside as his passive activated and showed that Santa now had another buff active, this one giving him an extra 20% on his highest stat. When I got the notification for the quest, I didn’t think it’d be like this…” While he enjoyed the free santa hat and “EVENT STAFF” t-shirt that came with accepting it, he had kinda hoped for something a little more exciting than just sitting around manning a booth all day. He loved the thought of helping out at a big winter festival like this one, especially to help cheer up the mood of the people after having the world literally turned upside down. The little game booth he was stuck at though, was NOT something Rory was a fan of. He didn’t really have much room to talk when it came to running sleazy operations, but carnival booths?! Even he could only take so much of it! ”How ‘bout you Nyke? Much luck over there? I think I’ma try something else here soon, this is just sooOOOooo boring. I mean, there’s festivities happening all around, I don’t wanna be stuck here all day!” [break][break] Pulling up the information for the quest, Rory carefully read over the details of it again. Manning a booth like this was one option, but there were other ways to spread holiday cheer too. It even suggested they try and come up with their own way of going about it, something that definitely got the gears turning in Rory’s head. The next person that ran by his booth, Rory made sure to hail down, being persistent until they stopped to listen. ”Hey! Wanna try your luck? I have a new game, and it gives you a buff if you win! I’ll even give you a discount for being one of the first to play!” [break][break] Though they seemed skeptical, ultimately the person ended up forking over some points to try this little game of his. It was simple, just roll some dice, and if you win, you get a stat buff! When they rolled the dice, Rory activated his class’ core ability on them, causing another die to appear over their head and roll, matching up with the die they threw. It landed on… a 2! ”Ah, better luck next time!” They seemed more than a bit upset, though admittedly a lot of their disappointment was at the 10% debuff they had received instead for not winning… Ah well, it was all Rory could do to just direct them towards his NO REFUNDS sign and wish them better luck next time! This game had potential to pull people in, but with as long as the cooldown was on it, it wasn’t very practical to use as the main draw-in. Plus, if people kept getting upset for losing, who knows–he might even end up failing the quest! [break][break] ”Hey, watch this booth for me would ya?” Rory quickly put the burden of his stall on the person at the booth next to his, hurrying away before they could object to get over to Nyke’s spot. ”Soo, what I’m thinking is: we could almost DEFINITELY spread more holiday cheer by grabbing one of those moving carts I see people running around every now and again, and moving through the festival with them. I’m sure we could find one sitting around somewhere, y’know, the kind people sell like food and drinks, or balloons from? Think you’d be up for that? Seemingly realizing that nothing it was doing was working against the humans, this boss changed things up again, this time launching multiple pods throughout the area. that soon began to start sprouting.[break][break] "There's more?!" Rory had no idea what would happen if they just let the pods do their thing, and he and the others were not about to just sit around and find out. One of the pods near him had started to flail a vine around, so he took advantage of his reflect skill by making another wall of dark energy beside it. When the pod's vine lashed out against it, the ability reflected the damage just like it was supposed to, causing that particular pod to wither up and stop moving. "Wait a second, these pods are pretty weak! Die!" Marching over to one of the other pods, Rory started stomping on it as soon as he got close. Golden Duck: 0/1[break] Running through this forest had been nothing but a nightmare so far, but with Tali's arrows and the branch that Nyke had found to beat the pods with, Rory was having little bits of hope sprinkle into his mind here and there. "Someone found a bushel? Looks like other people are making progress too! Once we kill these things we're already halfway there with the collecting, then we just need to get out of here!"[break][break] First, of course, they needed to finish dealing with this tree, so Rory curbstomped another of its pods. Still though, that buff would be scary if they did end up running into it, so this wasn’t really a win at all. [break][break] Once Rory had climbed the tree and gotten snatched up by it, he had a difficult time focusing on what was happening around him. Nyke sounded like he was freaking out, but despite this, he and Tali were still able to stay collected enough to help him out. Two glittery arrows slinked into the arms of this tree monster, and even while being flung around Rory could see a ghastly hand had floated up to snatch away its berry-eyes. It didn’t seem to be expecting and push-back, and dropped Rory to the ground with a loud, anguished roar as it clawed at its own face where the eyes had been stolen.[break][break] ”Th-thanks!” Rory scattered to get back to his feet, and noticed that Tali now had a fancy bow in his hand. He really could summon a weapon! Not only that, but as Rory looked at him, he noticed another bit of information show up. He could see that Tali was under the effect of a Speed Buff… so this must be what it meant when the “System” told him he could see buffs! And if the bow and arrows were from him, that must’ve meant the hand that blinded the monster was Nyke’s doing. [break][break] Though he was free now, it wasn’t like the tree monster was just gonna give up. It was even madder than before, and started thrashing its arms about wildly. When this didn’t really work, it switched to a new tactic; the hole from the split wood that made up its mouth began to glow with a deep orange flame, that it reared back a little before shooting out as a ball of fire. Despite not being able to see, surely it was gonna hit someone with that if it kept throwing out attacks like that! Rory didn’t have any means of direct attack, but he remembered one of the effects from his ability…[break][break] Throwing his hands forward toward the fireball, Rory willed a short wall of dark energy to block its path. As the ball collided with it, the wall seemed to fully absorb the impact and turn it around, sending it back to the tree itself! ”It-it worked! Wow, we really can do moves like a game!” A “buff” like he used earlier was one thing, but that could easily just be explained away as placebo. But all this? Suddenly, they were doing all kinds of fancy magic, and fighting an ACTUAL monster! If he were still under any delusions, Rory understood full well now just how CRAZY this place was![break][break] As the reflected fireball hit the tree, it ignited the monster. It became wreathed in those same dark-orange flames, and let out another roar. It probably didn’t expect its own attack to be used against it like that, but of course a monster made out of wood was weak to fire! ”I think we’re beating it! It wasn’t long before Rory that other’s started dropping in–some LITERALLY–but just like him it didn’t seem like they knew what was going on. The first two others he noticed were a man and woman, though it was a little hard not to notice the girl as she rushed over and started tugging as soon as she got here. She seemed really optimistic about this whole thing, but Rory wasn’t as sure. ”Uh, hi. It’s definitely festive, but uh, I dunno what's going on any more than you guys seem to. I hope it's a gifting event, that sure would be nice.”[break][break]
The last person that seemed to be teleported here was none other than Nyke, a man that had also been in the same “Tutorial” as Rory. Of all the people that could’ve been teleported, it was strange that he was also picked. While it was nice to see a friendly face, the fact that both of them were here only put him a little bit more on edge. ” Nyke, hey! Glad to see a familiar face in a place like this, though with just the four of us around, I think it might be another Tutorial situation…” If that were the case, it was probably best they start figuring out exactly what was happening here soon.[break][break]
Remembering about the “party feature” he had learned about, Rory sent invite requests to the other three, since it seemed like it might come in handy for this strange new dungeon. ”You guys wanna party up and start exploring? Oh, and for you two, I’m Rory, nice to meet you!”[break][break]
For better or worse, it turned out this wasn’t some event where they needed to go out and explore. No, instead… the event came right to them, announced by a roaring wind and chilling laugh. A giant, robotic version of Santa showed up before them, and it was not acting like it was up to any good. It proclaimed that the other four were all on the naughty list before it started to glow with a red light. Rory’s passive ability activated in response to that, telling him that Santa had received a buff to its speed. ”Uh oh, that’s a Speed Buff!”[break][break]
Santa proved that he was coming out swingin’ by launching a red gift box towards the group. While it could have been a good thing, Rory severely doubted that was the case, and threw up his hands to use the shielding aspect of his Coin Flipper ability. A dark wall of energy with little dice swirling around inside of it would appear right in front of the group to stop the gift from colliding with them, but the force of the explosion as the box blew up was more than enough to shatter Rory’s attempted defense. (E-Rank worth of Damage stopped & reflected to Santa)[break][break]
Even WITH his shield this was still A LOT of damage, causing him to rear back with an audibly Grahh! from the suddenness of the hit. Oh no,was this a boss fight meant for higher level people?! He was still new here, and he knew Nyke would be in the same boat as him if they had their tutorial together…[break][break]
Still, that didn’t mean he was useless against this thing. He couldn’t just sit back and let everyone else deal with this, and he DID have some useful abilities even at such a low level. ”Coin Flipper!” (Flipping Santa’s buff to -1 Speed Rank) Rory didn’t even have any attack abilities yet, but if this RoboSanta was so reliant on buffs like it had to its speed, then he was the perfect one to negate that ability! Instead of increasing its Speed so much, Santa would find its speed LOWERED by an equal amount if Rory’s coin flipper went off like he intended. He might not be able to hurt the enemy, but he could at least stop it from getting stronger![break][break]

Rory liked Christmas. For as much as he liked money, he enjoyed being able to get nice things for his mother and friends growing up. It had been a while since he had gotten anyone a gift, and with the sudden change and gamification of the world, it didn’t seem like this year would be any different. He was still trying to get used to the new look and “mechanics” of how things worked now, and had found that hub area to be pretty useful for learning the ropes. At least he had a slightly better understanding now of classes and abilities from talking to other people about it.[break][break]
After spending some time gathering info and learning up on the various systems that affected the world now, Rory came to the conclusion that the best way to try and survive was to take it fairly easy, and maybe try to get some of those “level-ups” he had heard others talk about. Still, he appreciated the thought; if they pooled their heads and shared any ideas they came up with, he had a feeling their survival rate as a group would be a whole lot higher.[break][break] Nyke too brought up something important, about how the goal to find all the items wasn’t just for the three of them, but for everyone here. It seemed like their group was the first one to find anything as Tali collected one of the crimson berries, and Rory was filled with a bit more hope than before… that was QUICKLY dismissed by the next pop up to show up.[break][break] This new popup had the face of one of the people from earlier, and a notice that he had been killed. ”Even if this is being treated like a game, it’s becoming more and more obvious that it’s not one. I-I think he’s really gone-” Another pop up suddenly appeared with yet another face from that group on it, quickly followed by another, and another, and as more and more people were “eliminated”, the more color flushed from Rory’s face. [break] ”Jesus Christ this is actually a nightmare, it took all of them out and it’s getting stronger?!” How were they supposed to win against something like that? How could they fight it if it was so strong and they were so weak? Wait… that could be the “key” to this “riddle”! ”Maybe… maybe we really aren’t supposed to fight it. I don’t have any “attack skills”, and it DID give us the option to get out of here by gathering these materials, right? So what if that in itself is a riddle? We just have to think smart and keep going after the items.”[break][break] They were already part of the way there, they just needed 4 more berries, those bushels, and a duck… it couldn’t be that hard, could it? Rory examined the bush that Tali had found their first berry in, making note of the specific looks of the bush and the wicked tree that surrounded it. That thing was for real creepy, though as he looked across and studied it he soon realized… ”Hey, look! I think I can see two more berries up near the top of the tree!” Rory wasn’t the most skilled of climbers by any means, but he wasted no time hurrying over to it and reaching up towards a hole near the top of it, where inside he could see two little cherry-red orbs, that almost seemed to be glowing as it to draw attention to them.[break][break] As Rory reached up to pluck the berries, he suddenly felt the tree begin to shake. No sooner than when his finger brushed against the first berry did the branches of the tree spring to life, circling down to grab the man up and hold him up in the air. The trunk of the tree warped its shape, bark splitting to form a mouth that bellowed out in a deep voice the words, ”GREEDY GREEDY! GREEDY GREEDY!” again and again. The two red berries formed the eyes of the monster, seemingly fixated on Rory as he screamed. Rory brought up the rear of their little group, thinking back to what he had read about what his “class” could do to respond to Tali’s question about weapons. ”It doesn’t look like I have much in the way of weapons, though I do have a shield ability. That, and the dice buff thing.” Rory put his hands together, scrunching his face up as he tried to activate his “core” again- only to be met with a message that it was still on cooldown. ”O-oh. Cooldown? I guess there’s a limit to how often we can do things. Man, that’s gonna be annoying... What about you, Nyke? Anything interesting?” As ominous as it was, He was glad to have an Apocalypse Knight in his group- if that Boss did show up, they would probably need at least a little bit of firepower.[break][break] As they moved, Nyke brought up mention of where the other two were from. It hadn’t hit him until just then, but this… FOREST, it was completely different from the place he was just a few minutes prior. Was he even in the states anymore?! He didn’t know enough about trees to tell, but they looked like any other… or did they?! Trees are trees, damnit! ”Same, I was in Cincinnati one minute and the next thing I know, here I am in a forest. Man, this really isn’t a dream, is it?” Rory rubbed his face in frustration. It was a good thing he didn’t try to just rush the Boss; this world seemed really “gamified”, but he didn’t want to risk dying before he knew if respawning was a thing or not.[break][break] Since this really did seem to be reality, Rory put a bit more thought into what it was they were looking for. Some people were really freaking out, while on the contrary others were gushing and bragging about how cool their classes were. Some people even had weapons with them, making Rory realllly start to regret not picking another class. Most of the people here started to group up together, rallied under a man that was questioning others based on their classes. [break][break] Before he got to Rory, however, another man did, and though he was alone he was already asking for a team-up. With mostly everyone else forming a large group here, that probably meant the Boss Ogre would be focused on their group, and with how many people they had surely they could beat it? But wait, if it DID give loot, then wouldn't that be split between everyone there? It was only the smallest of rocks, yet still was enough to to make him lose his balance. When he was in kindergarten, Jake did not have many friends. He did not understand why, and one day decided to ask another kid why he was left alone. The kid responded that "his head was funny and he was weird," crushing the young boys soul. From that day forth he decided to improve himself. He began exercising, working out to tone his body into the most peak form imaginable. Jake took courses, reading about relationships between people to learn how to be the best person he could be. He began to put himself out in the world as he grew older, always living a life of selflessness, defending those in need... but it was lonely. In improving himself, other's perception of him changed. He was untouchable, a rung above the others in their eyes- to the point that many were afraid of him. He had gone too far in his quest for perfection, becoming a gentle giant. A gigachad. Without others to keep him company, Jake found another source of camaraderie: animals. His apartment did not allow pets, but that didn't stop him from forming bonds with beasts. Jake began working at a pet store, taking care of any creatures that passed through, ensuring that every guest to the store knew everything they needed to know to give the animal the best life imaginable. In his private life, Jake continued to search for friends and others that weren't afraid of him, but alas; none were to be found. With his spare time, he took up gaming. Monster tamers were his favorite genre, where he spent countless hours catching, breeding, and raises creatures. Between Nyke and Summer, they hadn’t been an issue for the party at all, so much so that Santa popped back out of its shell and dropped a bomb–Literally! Another present exploded, but this one happened right on the robot itself. It looked like their earlier plan had worked, Santa was dumb enough to blow itself up. Summer was close enough that she also could’ve been hit, Rory just hoped her shield was enough to protect her again.[break][break] With Santa back in the mix, he decided to summon another festive creature to help him out. Rory was confused at first… until he saw the red light speeding down from above them. Rudolph was here, and he had already snatched up Crom. ”Noo!” Rory threw his hands up to try and put one of his Coin Flipper shields in front of the reindeer and save his ally. Alas, the enemies were too fast. ”DAMNIT! You were my favorite Holiday! Bring him back!”[break][break] Although his class buff was still on Santa, Rory noticed the speed buff had faded from it. He could flip another one if it came to that, but otherwise things were starting to get really dire here. There were only four of them to begin with, and already one of them was gone. Rory was low level, he hadn’t gotten strong enough to fight a boss like this yet! Nyke was in the same boat here… but he was still able to carry his weight.
