With the Boss weakened, Tali's next attack with his silvery bow seemed to stop the monster dead in its tracks. Nyke had found the last berry, causing a light to appear in the distance. That meant… "We're near the end!" [break][break]
Rory himself wasn't looking too pretty with all the mud he'd gotten on himself from the marsh earlier, and wasn't in the best shape either after the encounter with the tree monster. Even despite that, Tali was worse off, having managed to go toe to toe with the boss while the other two got the final items… Rory had to make sure they all got out okay.[break][break]
Nyke had the plan to escape through the lake, which Rory backed. "The lake..? Oh! Maybe the Boss can't swim!" When they reached the water's edge, Rory outstretched an arm to Tali. He and Nyke seemed to have the same idea here. There was no way they were leaving anyone behind![break][break]
The Ogre roused again, once again starting its charge towards the group. Rory really hoped they were right here, if they could just get through the lake, the light of the exit wouldn't be much further away…[break][break]

Rory was prepared to try and do all he keep to absorb the bomb and keep his allies alive, but he was so caught up in the moment, he didn’t even realize Santa got off of him! This seemed to be due to his allies' effects… they pacified the robot! Rory wasn’t even going to question it, he was just happy that this was over! He watched as Santa gathered his sleigh and rushed off in a blur of light, leaving them with only the ominous warning of it returning next year.[break][break]
That was terrifying… did that mean that next year this was going to happen again?! Whatever the case, Rory brushed himself off and stood up– only to find himself in a new place once more. Instead of the icey cold mountain, he was now in some kind of… workshop? The heat of a fire ahead of him was a stark contrast with how freezing he was earlier, and any snow that had collected on his clothes had melted already. [break][break]
As he walked forward to the forge, Rory jumped in surprise at the sight of someone manning it. He didn’t feel the fear he felt with her that he did with Santa, and somehow, he understood what was happening before she could even explain it. An upgrade for his gear? But he didn’t even have anything- wait, what?! As Rory reached into his pocket, he found something new there: a lucky coin that certainly hadn’t been on his person before. With no ideas of what else to use, he offered the coin to the woman to use her forge on. [break][break]

With the duck in hand all they needed to do now was… wait, what?! As Rory tried to leave the pond and get back towards the others, he found himself tripping over the reeds and tall grass. They almost seemed to have grown around him, and they were all so disorienting that he couldn’t even tell where he was anymore! By the time he was finally able to stand, the area he was in had a different feel to it. [break][break]
Rory pushed through the tall grass, breaking free from the reeds to see that he was now in sort of small clearing. He couldn’t see anything from before, not the ogre, not his allies, not even the pond he was just at! Instead, right in the middle of the clearing was another duck, sitting up on the very top of a large pile of golden eggs.[break][break]
”Holy shit! Jackpot!” Rory quickly scrambled over to the eggs, grabbing the first egg he saw and tapping his hand against it. This wasn’t just an illusion, these were solid gold! He felt his lips curl into a wicked grin as he leaped with joy. He was rich! All this chaos maybe wasn’t so bad if he got to get all this out of it! [break][break]
The money-hungry man started climbing the pile of golden eggs, but that thought stuck in his mind. All this chaos… what about the others? Where were Nyke and Tali? Sure, these were gold, and a lot of it, but… Rory stopped climbing the pile, and glanced down at the egg in his hand. Was this really worth it? What if he could still get back to the other’s and help them? [break][break]
With tears in his eyes, he slid back down the pile, and reluctantly placed the golden egg back on it. ”Just my luck… but… DAMNIT! I CAN’T JUST LEAVE THEM! I HAVE TO GET BACK-”[break][break]
As soon as the words left his mouth, Rory found himself back in the muck at the pond. Had that been a nightmare?! With the way things were, there was no telling, but he wasted no time jumping back to his feet. Sure enough, he was back in the action, with his allies in front of him. Tali, Nyke, and… the Ogre! [break][break]
”COIN FLIPPER!” Rory screamed as he flung his hands forward toward the Ogre. Tali must have laid all kinds of hurt on the beast judging by the look of its arm. Rory had been so focused playing defense with his dark shield earlier, he had neglected the other part of his ability– it could reverse buffs! He watched as the Ogre groaned out and suddenly seemed to slow down, its massive buff flipped into a massive detriment. He came back to help his allies so that all three of them could get out of here alive, and that was sure as hell what he planned to do! [break][break]

Getting on the robot’s back definitely seemed to piss it off, but pissing it off may’ve been the best thing Rory could do here. While it was focused on him, his allies were able to focus on beating it up! [break][break]
For Rory, this turned out to be a bit of a double-edged sword. Summer’s rage against the machine was enough to knock it onto its back–the back that Rory was on! ”Gaah!! Get off me, you big, dumb, wad of metal!!” Rory struggled to try and escape from under the hefty robot, but ultimately, it had him pinned. He was lucky there was snow there to break up the fall a bit, but still… this wasn’t looking good. [break][break]
To bring things from bad to worse, as he struggled to get out from under the Boss, Rory saw its body rapidly begin to glow. Wait, glow?! Was this thing gonna blow?! ”G-guys?! What’s it doing?! I- Uh- DAMNIT!” Rory had to have faith in his friends to take out the robot–there wasn’t anything else he could do like this!--but if they couldn’t stop it from exploding, there was only one thing left he could do to try and stop it.[break][break]
”COIN FLIPPER!” If all other hope seemed lost, Rory would use the shield of his coin flipper once more, this time using the dark energy to form a small dome around himself and the robot. If he couldn’t escape the machine, he was going to make sure he stopped it from hurting his allies and anyone else with all his might and everything he had left..![break][break]

As they fled the Ogre, eventually the group came across another opening with water. There, Tali turned back to give the other two time to find the duck. ”What?! I-” Rory didn’t want to just leave him there–but Tali was right here, wasn’t he? They wouldn’t get anywhere just by running; they needed to find the duck. ”Okay! I believe in you!” [break][break]
With Nyke and Rory now searching for the remaining objectives, felt a lump in his throat as Nyke mentioned that Tali could die if they didn’t hurry. Just hearing it said out loud was terrifying… ”Let’s find this duck ASAP!”[break][break]
Scanning through the swamp area, it was Nyke that first spotted the duck. Rory crouched down to watch his ally sneak up on the bird, slowly getting closer before making a sprint towards it–and falling short! Shit! [break][break]
”Coin flipper! Rory threw his hand out in front of the duck, causing another of his shields to appear, only this time he was using it as a barrier instead of for defense. Appearing right in front of the bird as it tried to fly away, the golden duck let out a “SQUACK!” as it flew right into the dark wall of energy and tumbled to the ground. Rory rushed over to the duck and scooped it up in his hands. ”FINALLY! WE GOT THE DUCK!” Seeing Tali’s horse and weapon, and The things Nyke could do with his class both had made Rory a little bit envious of his companions… but without his own abilities, they wouldn’t have been able to capture the duck like this! Maybe it really was for the best that he didn’t pick the Gold Dollar class![break][break]

”Haha, see, there you go! Aim a little higher!” Noticing the man trying to throw a snowball his way (and failing miserably), Rory decided it might help to show him how it’s done. He was starting to have some fun here and didn’t want to discourage the man, so instead of throwing the snowball at him, he threw it at the critter that had jumped up on Nyke. [break][break]
Rory kept moving, stopping and laughing along the way to make sure the others were following along. ”C’mon, there’ll be more snow outside on the other end! You might even hit your mark next time!” For as much of a “grinch” as this man seemed to be, it didn’t take much goading at all to get him to chase after. [break][break]

Other than just for the sake of having fun, Rory was starting to realize that having a snowball fight was just the kinda thing that would help spread cheer like they needed to do for this mission. Once they got a cart and started moving through the festival, it’d be smooth sailing! [break][break]
As he got to the exit stairs at the opposite side of the subway, Rory glanced back to his ally. To make sure Nyke was okay, he called back and paused for a moment before going back outside. Rory would have been in awe if it wasn’t for the terrifying situation he was in. As the group began to make a run for it, Tali summoned a white horse with a wicked mane of bright blue fire. ”A horse?! This guy came with a weapon AND the ability to summon a steed like that, Rory was really starting to feel like he had gotten the short end of the stick when it came to class options! [break][break]
With Nyke almost shimmering with vigor as he ran, Rory didn’t need to be told twice to take advantage of the horse that was here and hop up onto it. He hadn’t ridden before, and was glad he didn’t get car sick with as turbulent as it was. Not wanting to be useless here, he turned and activated his “core ability” again, this time on the Ogre instead of himself. Rory could see the buff activate on the monster… while it wasn’t as strong as the buff he had received, the ability still buffed their enemies, causing a slight increase to its power. ”DAMNIT![break][break]
The Ogre didn’t hesitate to chase after the group, and swung at the ground to send debris flying their way. Nyke managed to leap out of the way of danger, but since Tali was “driving” this thing and trying to shoot it at the same time, it was the least Rory could do to try and play defense. Just like he had done earlier with that “coin flipper” ability, he created a dark wall between the horse and the Ogre, causing any debris to just clatter against it and fall away. Rory could see the cracks that the attack had put in his ability; if even just the debris from one of its attacks was so strong, he didn’t want to find out just how badly one of its swings would hurt. [break][break]
”How long can we run?! I don’t know where–wait, look! Rory was concerned about just how long they could be on the run from this monster, but as they made their attempted escape, Tali’s horse took them right under a tree with another Silver Bushel dangling high in the air from one of its branches. Ordinarily, it looked like something that would require the gatherer to climb the tree to reach, but with the added height from the horse, Rory reached right up and grabbed it as they rode past. [break][break]
”That’s the third Silver Bushel! All we need now are the duck and some berries!” Rory still had no idea where to find the duck, but if they got lucky here, they might not even need to keep running for long. If Rory’s ability was telling about their luck though, their luck was starting to run dry…[break][break]

Almost as soon as they had appeared, the elves were gone again. Between Nyke and Summer, they hadn’t been an issue for the party at all, so much so that Santa popped back out of its shell and dropped a bomb–Literally! Another present exploded, but this one happened right on the robot itself. It looked like their earlier plan had worked, Santa was dumb enough to blow itself up. Summer was close enough that she also could’ve been hit, Rory just hoped her shield was enough to protect her again.[break][break]
With Santa back in the mix, he decided to summon another festive creature to help him out. Rory was confused at first… until he saw the red light speeding down from above them. Rudolph was here, and he had already snatched up Crom. ”Noo!” Rory threw his hands up to try and put one of his Coin Flipper shields in front of the reindeer and save his ally. Alas, the enemies were too fast. ”DAMNIT! You were my favorite Holiday! Bring him back!”[break][break]
Although his class buff was still on Santa, Rory noticed the speed buff had faded from it. He could flip another one if it came to that, but otherwise things were starting to get really dire here. There were only four of them to begin with, and already one of them was gone. Rory was low level, he hadn’t gotten strong enough to fight a boss like this yet! Nyke was in the same boat here… but he was still able to carry his weight. Even being so low level, Nyke was still not afraid to run in and tackle those elfs, to fight against these seemingly insurmountable odds.[break][break]
Having Nyke here and seeing him still take action, helped Rory have the courage he needed to keep his head in the game. ”C’mon Rory, you got this!” He made a dash, running straight towards the big Robo Santa and trying to leap onto its back. ”HIYAA! TAKE THIS YOU LUMP OF METAL!”[break][break]

Nyke’s class had a mind of his own? That… was certainly unique, to say the least. Rory wanted to press him for more information about it, but due to the sudden appearance of this grinch, he had to just hold onto the thought for now. He seemed to be right about it dragging him into danger. Well, if this guy could even be considered dangerous.[break][break]
Rory had to stifle a laugh when his friend threw a snowball at the guy. Hey, the man was being aggressive here, it was both warranted and in good festive fun! Of course, the guy didn’t seem to see it that way, and sent his little blob forward to attack. Nyke looked like he had it pretty under control, having a little one-sided snowball fight with it as they ran around. It sure looked like fun, but while he was keeping the companion busy, Rory made his way over to the man himself. [break][break]
”C’mon man, have some fun! We’re just on a mission to spread some cheer, and uhh, we aren’t really here to fight.”[break][break]

“Y-yeah man, whatever floats your boat. You can put it on your lil dude if you wanna, that’d be cute.” Rory sighed, more from how silly this was than anything, and reached up to take his hat off. He paused for a moment, however, and left the hat on his head. He had another idea that might just make this a lil more fun. “Ew no I won’t do that. BUT MWAHAHA, SEE?! I TOLD YOU YOU’D REGRET IT! NOW YOU’RE NOT SO FESTIVE AFTER ALL. I- wait what are you doing.” [break][break]
Rory put his hands together as a grin grew across his face. ”Wellllll I can take it off, but I think it’d be a lot more fun if you…” He tried to slyly turn to ball up some snow before throwing it at the man and running “Knock it off me with snowball heheheh!!”[break][break]

If things kept going like this, Rory felt like they might end up pulling through in this fight. It seemed like a classic tortoise and the hare scenario, they just needed to keep focused on defense and not rush into things and eventually the boss would go down. That was assuming, of course, that things kept going as they were, but quickly that ended up not being the case.[break][break]
Instead of maintaining the status quo of the fight, Santa created two little robot elfs that were now headed toward the party. The elfs, on the other hand, were another story entirely. As they rushed forward, they seemed to be targeting Summer specifically, so Rory tried to play interceptor once more. He summoned another of his swirling dice shields in front of one of them, but was a little shocked to see that even these minions were able to burst right through his ability (just how strong were they?!) Thankfully, it at least seemed to be noticeably hurt by the reflected damage. ”Looks like we don’t have to; they're coming to us!”[break][break]

Hey I mean both work but–oh, I guess we’re going to the subway” Rory hadn’t expected Nyke to have the driving item, whatever that may be, but he wasn’t expecting him to be so eager to take the subway route. The way he spoke of it though was confusing; what did he mean that something was making him go to the subway? ”Do you mean like, is it a quest objective for you? Maybe we’ll get a bonus for heading that way; I’m sure it won’t be that bad.”[break][break] It was that bad. Just peering down the stairs that led to the subways made it obvious that most people avoided them now, in just the same way that people avoided leaving the safe zones. Even the lighting down there made it pretty ominous, with its dim-lit halls and flickering lights. It was no surprise that no one was really lingering around inside, besides the odd person or two hurrying through, probably with the same idea to use this place as a shortcut. Well, almost no one was lingering around. There was one guy sticking to himself, just laying around on a bench scrolling through his phone.[break][break] “No way. Nu-uh. Not happening. Look at that HAT! It’s so horrible, why I outta–” Rory was startled by the man suddenly hopping up and shouting at them. He hadn’t paid much attention to the man while they were walking by, but apparently they had done SOMETHING to garner his attention. “I hate all this seasonal cheer, I do. I hate it, I despise it, I do not like it, nor do I enjoy it in any thinkable way. Y’know the powers that be gave me this class for a REASON!”[break][break] ”What? I can’t even…” The man turned away frustrated, before turning back to them and striking a pose. “Alright you really FORCED MY HAND here! I may only be level one, but my GRINCH class has a really strong ability y’know!” The man summoned a bright red ornament to his hand and tossed it to the ground, causing it to shatter and a little green blob to appear in its place. How vile it was to stomp out these pods! The screeches they let out did not make it any easier for Rory, but after being flung around by that tree… he had no second thoughts about taking them out. By the time the pods had been stomped out, the tree had burned and withered away. If he didn’t have other people with him, there was no way Rory would’ve gotten out of that one alive; even as it were, he had still gotten banged up from the miniboss–and if that was just the miniboss, he didn’t even want to think about how much worse the actual boss was going to be![break][break]
With the ent defeated, Nyke was the one who risked investigation this time, cracking down on the body of the enemy to search for any more collectables it might be hiding away. Sure enough, one of the needed silver bushels was inside, something that Rory made sure to note the appearance of. That was one less thing to worry about, now that they knew what that item even was. Unfortunately, this was very quickly turning into an “out of the frying pan and into the fire” sort of situation, as something let out a guttural wail near the party.[break][break]
Rory’s head immediately jerked towards the sound as another person’s death message popped up. He couldn’t see it yet, but its presence could be felt. The ground shook as it stomped through the wood, loud SNAPS resounding through the forest as it undoubtedly crushed whatever trees and branches lay before it. [break][break]
Two side-by-side, glowing yellow dots were the first parts of the Ogre Rory saw. He could feel his body turning white as his passive activated yet again, this time showing the Death Spiral buff on the monster as it emerged from the forest. It pushed a tree over to break into their little clearing, its mangled head to the air as it sniffed. Rory had kinda hoped for a monster like shrek to be the boss here, but this was something straight out of a nightmare. The creature was like a massive man, entirely muscular with arms disproportionately larger than the rest of its body. Two gnarly horns sat atop its head, with a row of jagged teeth breaking free from its lips. It was haphazardly covered in ragged clothes made of bones and furs, but the worst part of all… were the deep red stains splashed all over the creature. [break][break]
After bursting through the treeline, the Ogre stood for a moment, sniffing at the air still. Rory was stunned by its appearance, but when he regained control of his body, he stumbled back, slowly taking a few steps back. Had… had it been attracted to them from the smell of the fire?! They got half the supplies they needed to escape by beating this tree “miniboss”, but had it really been a trap to draw the attention of the REAL Boss?! Rory was again filled with fear as the monster finally set its eyes on the dead Ent, and he could’ve sworn the creature grinned wickedly as it saw the humans around it. [break][break]

For as much fun as Nyke’s booth seemed, Rory had no doubt that the man was COLD. ”Yeah aha, might do some good to get outta the snow for a bit.” As for where they would actually get the kind of cart that he wanted, that took a bit more thought. Surely no one they bumped into with one would want to just give it up, so they’d likely have to find a room for staff supplies. The park was probably the closest place like that to them, but it was gonna be a decent trek to get there. [break][break]
”Hmm, I know some people can use cars again, but they’re still “locked” for me; you can’t use them yet, can you? We could probably get a cart at the park, but… Rory tapped his chin for a moment in thought. Even if they could use vehicles, there was still the problem of not having one around. Plus, with how few people could drive now, most of the roads were filled with people celebrating, so not really the best method of travel. Without driving, they’d have to just walk and move their way through the crowd to get there, unless…[break][break]
”We could cut through the subway; it should still be quicker even with the trains being down. But, I don’t think it's a safezone like the rest of the city. I don’t expect much in the way of monsters, but I’ve heard the people that hang out down there aren’t the kindest.” With the two of them together, Rory wasn’t really worried about danger if they took that route, but with all that they had been through, he wouldn’t blame Nyke if he wanted to take the safer route. Plus, who knows; they might even be able to find some other way of spreading cheer while moving through a crowd! There were certainly options here. ”Whatcha think Nyke?
