Fur melted away to a displeased-looking fellow on his knees, one hand braced over his gut as if he’d been decked there. “Damn it,” he cleared his throat, coughing a bit more. His mouth, the front of his shirt, and his hands were coated in umber. One hand was raised, as if saying Hold on as he composed himself.
Once he got himself together, he breathed out and tried again. “It’s not—it’s not what you think.”

At the mention of his transformation and the mysterious offer, the intrigue turned into resolve.
Footsteps sounded from the next aisle over. What emerged from the shelves was a tall man decked in strange clothes — a mix of borrowed (or stolen?) modern wear and hunter’s gear. Most prominent was the thick white pelt draped over his shoulders, the pattern of which matched the earlier leopard’s fur perfectly.
Beside the well-dressed fellow in red and black, it was kind of a mess.
Though aesthetic impression was the last thing on his mind right now.
Marching up until he could meet the stranger eye-to-eye, Yuki narrowed his gaze. “Tell me what you know,” he demanded, “Now.”
The leopard ears atop his head had folded back. He was impatient, but he could still answer. “This transformation — I can cause it at will but it doesn’t feel like I have full control over it. Why? Is it because of that? Emotions?”
He sounded pissed, and he was. But as he grilled the man for answers, the tail poking from under the cloak waved, betraying an eagerness. The leopard visibly tensed. Its eyes flicked between the spirit and its presumed summoner, widening with something like realization. It was a player. And they were terrified.
It opened its mouth, but all that came out was warbled growling. Shit.
Under its paws, its prey had stopped moving, having long since whimpered the last of its cries. The pool underneath it stretched outward, a dark liquid under the canopies, reeking of rust. The leopard’s feet were coated in it.
It turned to face the frozen stranger, eyes wide with unspoken panic before it dove forwards, moving to weave past the fox and bowl the man with the pink hair over before he could escape carrying the wrong idea.

He cried out as three lines were dug, narrowly missing his eye and instead marking from his temple down to his cheek.
The leopard withdrew immediately. Blood trickled down to stain white fur, ears folded back as he snarled at the now-taller creature. Trying to approach that thing in this form wasn’t working. He needed more precision.
Fur melted away, his body quickly molding itself back into humanoid form. He reformed, still bearing that grudge on his features, the wound transferring to the skin of his cheek.
Before he could act, he found his vision obscured, his ears filled with the sound of a wet THWAP.
It shattered his focus. He reeled, head buried in soggy clothes coming from nowhere, blinded, hands coming up to claw them off, only to find himself knocked completely off his feet by an unexpected impact.
He fell on his back. Wrenching the wet fabric off his face, he yelled at the stranger on top of him: “What the fuck are you doing?!” A deep, guttural accent wrapped harshly around Mongolian words, translated into the stranger’s understanding.
Silver eyes trailed down and widened. Acting fast, he grabbed the tiny man, pulling him until his back was pressed against his front. He wrapped his arms around him, only to pause with some panic upon realizing he was too short and that his hands were basically over his shoulders instead. Rather than bending his knees, Yuki pulled his hands down to the stranger’s stomach, yanking him into the air to add pressure.
And only then did the concern of possibly snapping his spine hit, at which point Yuki would let up on the force a little.

His eyes followed the man as he ducked out to feed the many pets around. The hand that had been hovering over the bandages wrapping his midsection tensed, feeling underneath it not just the sting of a recovering wound but the sudden onslaught of crippling hunger.
He hadn’t eaten since he was knocked out. He hadn’t eaten even before that because there hadn’t been anything left.
His body’s tremors abated just long enough for him to detect the scent of something good. As the other man busied himself with feeding the others, Yuki’s feet took him past the gathering.
And straight into the fridge.
Loud clatters were heard as he raided the unfortunate appliance, practically shoving his entire front into its icy compartments in search of something edible. He was oblivious to the tail that was now waving behind him, and to the ears that poked out of his head when he pulled from the fridge long enough to show a string of uncooked sausage links dangling from his mouth, pinched between fangs.

The animal paused. It lifted its head, liquid dribbling from its chin as it turned slit pupils to the direction of unfamiliar footsteps.

His shoulders fell as he exhaled. The man stood up, unblinking as he swung one foot forwards into the sheer drop, his body shifting on the way down.
What landed on the rooftop below was not a man. It shook its pelt, the height having been absorbed by a body designed for extreme heights, and thus feeling little of the impact that for an average person would have crushed them at the knees.
The snow leopard stared at her for a second, as if saying 'Like that.' before its eyes looked past her, growling quietly in warning of something’s approach.

He huffed a breath out of his nose, having heard the mumble that followed and unable to decide if he was flabbergasted or amused at the audacity. As the other man left the couch, he withdrew his condescending excuse of a prize, letting it hang limp by his side where the cats could watch it with interest.
“So, it was all out of the goodness of your heart?” Hard to believe, but some part of him relaxed upon hearing it. Being reassured that, to some extent, good people still existed, even with the world gone to madness.
He stepped forward, one foot after the other, until he was properly in front of his savior and looked down to meet his gaze. “Then, you won’t mind helping me some more, won’t you?” His eyes narrowed. “I still don't know a lot of how this works, but you seem to. So, help me.” He was going to survive, whatever it took. He had to find a way home.

Fast, he thought, glowering at the creature where it stood opposite of him. Of course it’s fast. Fucking dragon horse.
Now they were at a face-off, seizing each other up as they slowly rounded the fire. His world had zeroed in on the fight, acute senses focusing on survival. Claws brushed against the soil. Hooves stomped the earth flat. The creature bucked and snorted, clearly agitated by his presence.
It was surprising how the monster hadn’t ran upon detecting the ambush, but perhaps this one was still hungry.
Growling, Yuki whipped around, kicking the campfire with a back leg to send the embers flying towards his opponent, before pouncing forwards, jaws open to latch onto the beast with long fangs. The priority right now was to keep it from running or attacking. He went for one of its legs. It was a stain upon the lush breeze, woven between blankets of oak and dewy grass. It was sharp, vaguely beast-like and accompanied by the scent of ash and human.
Yuki lowered his head and changed directions, following the trail, driven more by curiosity than anything else. The countryside had been pleasant thus far; he steered clear of the dangerous beasts, occasionally challenging what he thought he could hunt. Players were also plentiful, dotting the map with their battles, though the landscape was so expansive there was little overlap, and he experienced few interruptions.
A small camp crawled into view. It was a modest setup: campfire, tent, everything just enough for one person or a small party.
Or it would be, had it not been for the mortifying creature skulking all over it. It was covered in an armor of scales yet bore the mannerisms of a horse. Its red eyes rove over the territory. It reeked of a human that wasn’t there.
Dread overcame Yuki’s features. There wasn’t any blood, but there was no shortage of creatures here who could dispose of prey in discreet ways, whether it be absorbing them whole or turning their bodies into dirt.

His body shifted, the process of it easier with a target in mind. An objective. Leaving that thing to clear out another camp wasn’t an option.

After about an hour of wandering, Yuki had found himself in what appeared to be the remnants of an incomplete apartment complex, the whole of it now listing diagonally as if having bashed against its side by a boulder. Disjointed metal jutted out from between shattered concrete, reaching towards its sunken neighbors and scraping against their rooftops.
The height didn’t faze him. The construction did. He’d never been to a massive city, though funnily enough, having it be barren and overwhelmed with nature made it easier for him to acclimate, not to mention easier to explore.
He paused, balance maintained on the high beam thanks to the tail spanning behind him. He had finally encountered someone. Squinting, he couldn’t decipher much of the stranger at this angle, but it appeared to be a girl sitting on the rooftop below, her vibrant pink hair a stark contrast against the bleak landscape.
The shock subsided to unease. It was an uncanny scene. He wasn’t fond of strangers either, but just up and leaving her there left a bad taste in his mouth. At least at this height, he had some leeway if she turned out to be an enemy.
Getting down to a crouch, he braced his hands into the metal and called out: “Oi! You, down there!”

Getting off the couch, he picked up the stick, the cats nearby watching curiously as he inspected it. The edges of his mouth turned down upon seeing the familiarity of its design. “It’s exactly like barrel of the rifle that thing shot me with. I don’t remember getting this.”
As he turned it in his hands, small tufts of white fur seemed to slip out of it, and no matter how much he picked it, the fur never seemed to run out. One bunch had already captured the attention of a cat, who was swatting it in the air like a feather. “Funny,” he deadpanned, feeling one tuft between his fingers. It was leopard fur. Of course.
He had to admit, it was well-made. Sturdy material, but light enough to be swung. Would be a good weapon. “This is insane.” He pointed it at the man on the couch. “And you. You’re insane too, aren’t you? Who would throw themselves on a leopard?”
