An upside to the arctic was that its lack of trees meant being able to spot large enemies even from a distance, though it also meant you were liable to be spotted if not careful.
Keeping low to the ground, the snow leopard continued exploring. A window had popped up that morning informing him of a quest for hunting certain monsters in the zone. He had been slowly learning how things worked in this game, and it was clear that danger was often a worthy risk for its rewards.
Hunting was familiar. Hunting, he could do. The only issue was what exactly was he hunting. He could identify a variety of prey but these otherworldly entities were beyond him, and the lists provided by the floating windows didn’t give exact details.
And another thing: Where were the other players?

He felt the urge to answer, but when he opened his mouth, all that came was a quiet rumble.
His ears folded back, internally grimacing.
He made no move to interrupt as the man gathered the food, instead busy paying attention to his explanation on how he came to his conclusion. Interest sparked in the leopard’s eyes. He hadn’t met anyone who could identify him yet. Even the man who saved him hadn’t realized until he had turned back himself.
Sorely, he wished he could right then. There were so many questions, and it appeared he had lucked out; this one might have the answer.
He tilted his head as the man guessed that he was judging him. He was irritated at the lingering threat of him and wary, yes, but there wasn’t anything to judge. Survival was survival.
The large tail draped behind him began to move as the can of meat was opened, the smell wafting in the air. As the stranger moved to the next aisle, it rose from its sitting position to walk forwards, stirring the leftover clutter with its tail, before taking a precautious sniff at the opened can. Questionable. And with the corpse nearby, not very appetizing.
A moment of peace. There were no further sounds of clattering to signal the leopard’s presence as Susame entered the next aisle.
Instead, there was a voice.
“Have you met others like me?”
No one emerged to meet the next aisle, but silver eyes watched from the dim, between the haphazard shelves.

A figure rose from the center of the room. The sheets pooled around its waist, and under it was an additional sheet stained with dried blood. Its mouth opened into a silent yawn lined with razor-sharp teeth, and it cracked its neck, relieving itself after a night sleeping in a strange position.
The figure looked around. Silver eyes go to the tall structure of scratched wood and sisal fabric. It reeked of feline. Most of this space, in fact, was a hodgepodge of different creatures that the figure could parse and identify individually.
But its attention was drawn to the one in the corner of the room.
Slipping out of the futon, it attempted to rise to full height, only to pause, teeth gritting as it moved its hand over a spot on its side. It felt bandages. The bullet wound had been painstakingly cleaned and dressed. It could be seen in the dim light, gauze peeking between the shorn pieces of what had once been a treasured heirloom.
The figure slowly walked, carefully maneuvering past a maze of spread cat and dog toys. There was a little dog asleep in its bed near the TV and three other curled blobs of fur that smelled to be cats, though these the figure couldn’t guess if they were awake or merely pretending to be.
It reached the sofa. A head tilted in curiosity. It leaned over the couch with brows furrowed, mouth pulled into a frown, and reached for the occupant’s sleeping face, intending first and foremost to shut him up. The leopard shuddered, freezing with the limb in his jaws. There came, as expected, a reaction of pain — but it wasn’t even a sound. And the hold around him didn’t waver.
Why? he thought, panicked. Why?
He could hear the muffled sounds of the people around. All of them called for the stranger to let go, to let someone take care of the wild animal swiftly.
The bile in his throat rose as they get no response. Instead, he's given a promise. One his mind didn’t believe, but his body reacted to with the lowering of his shoulders, the slackening of his jaw, as if it (and perhaps its presence alone) was a balm.
Despite being an animal, he couldn’t bring himself to bite further.
He spat out the arm — a harsh gesture, no doubt as painful as the initial breach, but the fight had gone out of him. Still blinded and deafened, the leopard growled, giving the fabric around its head one more shake before it turned its face from the crowd and its captor.

His ear flicked at the sound of the man’s voice, the sneer on his maw smoothing out into something more akin to an irritated glare. His body remained low to the ground, guard high as the stranger took the first few steps to close the distance between them. Now, more than ever, did the reek of metal cling to him.
The rest of his dialogue only served to ground him further. No immediate hostility. His eyes were trained not on his face, but over his shoulder, where the threat hovered.
Strange. Confusing. If he could control blood, would he not have done it to him by now? What was the point of trading banter with what the stranger could only know as a wild animal?

That voice again. It was amplified in the darkness, a plea and a warning, an unfamiliar nickname. It was like cotton: heavy somehow, distinct compared to the other voices around. The leopard was still tense, small noises of resistance coming from its throat as it wriggled in the human’s hold, but it was beginning to show signs of fatigue. Not so long ago it had emerged from the worst fight of its life, was thrown straight into a barrage of terrifying stimuli, and now this.
He can feel a beat thrum against his back where the stranger remained clinging. Stubborn, he thought, and the word was a shock in of itself. Perhaps the most human thought he’s had since his arrival.
The crowd watched, puzzled, as the leopard appeared to calm. The man with the axe remained wary, a disapproving scrunch to his brow as the large axe in his hand wavered, pointing to the floor.
At least until the leopard pried open its jaws and quickly snapped them over the stranger’s arm.
“Shit,” the man stepped forward at the sight of large fangs, “Kid, get off of it! Get off of it, now!”

The scent of death that had been clinging to the shadows stirred into motion. It became oversaturated with the smell of blood, and he watched with his ears pressed flat on his skull as the once-human cracked, and out from its lifeless flesh came an unnatural slithering red.
He felt his mouth pull, nose scrunching with distaste. It palmed at nothing, more bag of meat than man, yet he could process how wrong it was.
The sound of the man’s voice pulled his attention back to where he stood. His eyes were glowing. Memories of beady, watchful eyes seen in shadows come flooding back, and though this stranger’s form was far from the bulking mass of the Hunter that had assailed him on the first day of this apocalypse, the shadows lent him a presence that brought Yuki back to that ordeal.
Round pupils turned to slits. He registered the taunt and dissected it, finding something off. A man confident in his abilities did not pull punches in the presence of strange creatures.
(Was he playing with him just like that abomination had?)
There came a tin clink as one of his legs pulled back, sending another stray can away. His eyes flitted between the human and the flailing string of blood, feline body curled as if ready to flee out the door at any moment.

He’d been zone hopping, taking a tour of sorts. For someone whose world had extended only to a certain radius past the mountain his village settled in, the ability to appear almost anywhere in the world was a source of unparalleled delight.
Unison Central was his choice that day, and up until the interruption, he had been inspecting some of the strange wares one of the vendors was peddling. Looking down, he noticed the apple the irate stranger was holding — with a death grip, no less.
“I didn’t,” he admitted, silver eyes flicking from the fruit to the shorter man’s face. “You are small.” A strange addendum that came off an insult rather than fact.
Then, without any prompting or warning, he moved to snatch the apple out of Henri’s grip to inspect it, to see if it also glowed like some of the fruit he’d seen around. Or perhaps it was a rage-inducer. Who knew.

Yuki’s ears twitched, staring a while at the entrance. This store was unlike the ones he was accustomed to. For one, it was huge. There was no telling what could be inside.
Which only intrigued him further.
He clumsily hopped down from the wall, vaulting off a trash bin and stumbling into a landing. Shaking himself off, he padded through the open door.
It was a mess. There were cans and boxes strewn all over the floor. Unsurprisingly, the place had been pillaged. He sniffed at a few items torn from their wrappings, unable to discern what they were. People in the cities always needed so much stuff. This one smelled like a pastry. He wondered if he could eat it in this form.
Ultimately, he chose not to test it, instead continuing his quest of following the strange man. He could put his de facto caretaker under that stress later.
The man with long black hair was wandering through the aisles. Yuki kept to a crouch, staying low on the ground. A part of him was insisting on this position, as if he were stalking prey. It was interesting to find that the more he complied with it, the better he felt in general.
Though it was hard to keep up the effect when there was so much on the ground.
He carefully stepped one paw through a gap between some sardine cans, only for his tail to sweep against a can, causing it to roll across the floor.

The crowd was trying to close in. It stayed just far enough out of his range, but if he leaped, he could close in on one of them. He could attack. He could escape.
He crouched low to the ground, and the crowd tensed.
(He could hear, distantly, the sound of steps coming from a different direction, but it’s overshadowed by the imposing man attempting to draw closer with that glinting axe of his.)
Before he can spring forward, he’s blinded.
He caterwauled. Some on-lookers pressed their hands to their ears as the leopard’s cry released into the hub. The cat’s shrouded head began thrashing left and right, pulling at the thick fabric atop it, jaws snapping at the air.
His body drew back, trying to find sanctuary against the wall, only to feel the bump of someone’s leg. He could feel a presence pressed against him, holding whatever was on his head down. (The sound of the crowd dimmed; the smells intensified. The person nearest had a strange scent: an amalgamation of other creatures, and something sweet.)
He could hear someone whisper to him. The words registered less as meanings and more as soft tones, sanding the edges of his nerves. He threw his head back in retaliation, intending to slam his skull against his captor.

He was moving slowly, paying close attention to his paws. The wall he was walking across was high, though the height didn’t faze him, having been raised in the mountains. What did faze him: The possibility of stumbling on his own feet.
Today it was practice. Unable to stay still and accept the unusual circumstances that now plague his existence, he left safety in favor of the outdoors. He still didn’t understand how his transformation worked; it appeared he fluctuated between human and animal regardless if he’s in peak health. It was an unnerving mystery. He had to get it under control.
Looking up, he spotted the familiar black hair of the first man he saw upon teleporting into the zone. A fancy sort. The fellow didn’t appear to have noticed him. He’d been following him around for a while now, curious about his affairs. He hadn’t interacted with any other ‘players’ since Min-Su.
This man in question had a distinct scent that was easy enough to track. Although it was concerning, how a man of this stature was saturated in a thin veil of rust. The smell of blood. A girl was clutching her arm to her chest. Long red streaks stretched across the skin, bleeding as she sobbed. What looked to be her companions had crowded around her, offering aid and support as they watched the culprit warily.
The culprit had its back against a corner, pressed so firmly its white fur folded and splayed over the grimy walls. Its mouth was curled into a snarl. Its silver eyes darted between the crowd and the area around it, checking the walls for somewhere to leap to, an escape route.
“How the hell did that get in here?!” A large man arrived, wielding an oversized axe. “This is a safe zone!”
One of the girl’s companions answered, “It spawned in! We saw it. Thought it was asleep. Lilia saw it was hurt and tried to help.” They checked the girl's arm, its cuts already healed by the zone's policy, before continuing to glare at the snow leopard.
The man scratched his head. “Goddamn it. Alright, should we knock it out or—” He tapped the handle of his axe.
The leopard’s eyes zeroed in on it with thin, malevolent slits. Despite the large patch of blood drying on its side, it bared its fangs, hissing loudly at the growing crowd, its ears folded back and spine curving in an attempt to intimidate.
So much noise. So many smells. Too much. Too much.

The adrenaline continued to mix with pain from his side, the wound remaining fresh from all his movement. He had to end this. He would be dead in the next hour, let alone twelve. The Hunter would catch up and shoot him without hesitation. His nose was on the path of crisp air. He broke through the threshold of fir trees, finding ahead of him, a sheer drop. He skidded to a stop and turned around. The Hunter burst through the trees, rifle in hand, already taking aim. The bullet shot past Yuki, missing, but carving into the dirt, practically leaving a small crater. His eyes widened, ears ringing from the sound of it. How?Another shot. And another. And another. He leaped and rolled, dodging by the skin of his teeth, clumsily maneuvering his once-familiar legs as he skirted death by mere inches. The Hunter, frustrated, planted his feet firmly into the ground. In front of his barrel was an easy target: The pest cornered against a wall, pinched between the trees. This one. Yuki summoned all his strength into his legs, and leaped. The explosion echoed past the trees. It reached into the belly of the mountain, and the mountain awakened. From its peak came the swallowing wave of an avalanche. It rushed past one corner of the mountain, engulfing stone and fir whole, flattening shrubs. It overflowed until it had swept its mass off the cliff, sending all its clutter into the bank of infinite sky. When the roar of the mountain silenced, its wrath having as abrupt an end as its entry, a single tree shook. Its trunk was bent. Its lower branches were shaved clean. The only reason it hadn’t been swept along with the rest was because it had clung against a rock. Out from its topmost branches came a shivering, white ball. It stopped as a blue window popped in front of it, obscuring its path. It bumped against it, causing it to disappear. TUTORIAL COMPLETE!
