There was a window in front of him. It glowed, slightly translucent, he could see faint outlines of the environment past it, but it was impossible to ignore as it stuck close to his face. He knew its surface was populated by letters because he could read them. Mostly.

Ah hell yeah, I've seen REVENANT before. Where's the part where you eat bear meat RAWWW?? XDDD

Certain terms, like Revenant were complete and utter gibberish. And bear meat? He wished. No one had spotted a bear in months.

He squinted, his hand digging deeper as it clutched the worn fabric of his grandfather’s deel where, under threadbare layers of fur and felt, he felt his ribs shudder through his skin. He wondered if the hunger had finally driven him insane.

He waved his hand against the window as if it were mist, only to tap a solid, thin surface.

It flashed the word Primal Druid confirmed for a second.

TUTORIAL #1

The window vanished. He blinked, clutching the near-empty sack of stolen supplies in his other hand, before dismissing it all. He was still a long way from home. He should find a place to rest.

A loud crunch of snow came from behind him.

Turning around, he was met with the sight of a large man. Yuki knew he was tall, but this stranger was taller, at least by a foot, and wrapped in so many layers of furs he appeared impenetrable. The bulging mass of his wrapped arm moved. His face was obscured by a fur hat and a thick fabric wrapped over his nose and mouth, but through the gap, Yuki could see two beady yellow eyes with no sclera.

The Hunter pulled a strap on his shoulder, settling in his hands an old hunting rifle.

Yuki felt his stomach drop as the metal barrel was aimed towards him.

[attr="class","yukipost"]“Shit,” the word slipped past his lips, falling onto the snow alongside growing stains of red. “Shit.”

Yuki stumbled his way down an incline, bracing hard against the trunk of a withered tree and grinding his teeth together as the impact reverberated to the wound in his side.

A gunshot pierced the air and he winced, shrinking into a ball behind the tree. Even without checking he knew that thing was lumbering after him.

How many shots had it been? The bullets were endless. There were no other people around, no animals either. Bile rose in Yuki’s throat as he was reminded the wasted shots could only be for him — to keep him running.

It was playing with him.

Thudding steps matched the beat of his heart. He controlled his breathing and kept still.

The Hunter looked up from his prey’s red trail and raised his rifle, lining the barrel with the dead trunk. Shooting the human at this range could deafen him.

He drew closer, his massive boot sinking into a thick layer of loose snow.

CLANG! as metal teeth shut closed, the rifle clicking against the palm of the Hunter’s hand as he reeled.

Grinding his teeth against the pain, Yuki slammed his legs down against the ground, pushing himself up and charging straight at his pursuer.

The Hunter squeezed the trigger, the bullet shooting far from Yuki’s shoulder, aimed too high.

Yuki slammed his body against the wall of furs, feeling it more like stone, the recoil hitting instantly. The Hunter was forced off balance, one foot locked into the iron trap, the other momentarily meeting air.

Before they collide with the snow, Yuki dug his hands into his enemy, clinging for dear life before a symphony of loud snapping populated the air, the white ocean teeming with hungry jaws after months without a catch.

He was atop the giant now. The goliath was strangely silent despite having many shards of metal now chaining it into the earth. Where its fur clothes were torn, black ichor dribbled out.

Yuki scrambled, pulling his old hunting knife from its holster on his leg. It settled in his palm as if it belonged there, and he raised it, the fear and anger in his eyes clear as he met with his tormentor’s unwavering gaze.

He’d never seen them blink, and they still didn’t, even as he slashed it deep across the neck, exactly where you’re supposed to.

The body he’s sitting on tensed, then settled.

Yuki breathed, his shoulders too, falling, as he stared at the now-catatonic behemoth. Its eyes had shut. His panic was still fresh in his veins.

Yet he reached forwards, drawn by an inexplicable curiosity. This thing had been chasing him for the better part of an hour. What did it look like?

His fingers brushed against the shroud covering its nose and mouth.

His world shifted.

The static arm came to life. Sturdy jaws gripped its wrist, made to withstand the struggle of the largest predators, yet at a single pull came snapping in half. The Hunter pried at his restraints as if they were little more than thread.

It was impossible. It hadn’t been this strong earlier.

Yuki choked, a hand tightening around his neck and lifting him up in the air. The Hunter rose from his bed of tar-black snow, free, and from the looks of it, furious.

Yuki dug his fingers into the pressure tightening around his neck, clawing, his eyes blown wide with panic, screaming. What was happening? Why was this happening?

The rifle lay somewhere on the ground. Now, it appeared the game was over, and his pursuer was going to kill him with his bare hands.

Flailing hands and legs slowed into dragging struggles. He hadn’t thought dying of strangulation could take this long. Despite his struggling, the Hunter kept a firm hold, determined, apparently, to choke him as slowly as possible.

Black spots were littering his vision. Half-lidded eyes wandered aimlessly at the last thing he’d see: An unfeeling, condescending gaze that watched the life ebb out of him. Thoughts were fleeting now, but he still can’t help finding it outrageous that his killer would feel so little in the act, would regard this as if it were as menial as crushing an ant.

He scratched at the collar some more, weak now after realizing his gloves would blunt his nails anyway. He wished he still had his knife.

If he was faster, would he have been able to escape? If he was stronger, could he have fought back?

His vision blurred, feeling the fingers around his neck tighten even more, yet he didn’t black out. His senses remained sharp.

Sharper.

Yuki hissed, feeling a riot of stimuli barrage his mind. He could smell the snow around them, the shifting of frost in the air, the scent dead animal clinging to the Hunter’s gloves and the strange, coal-like scent emitted from under its coverings. He could hear the scrape of the Hunter’s boots against the snow, and the sound of his own hands coming to life against his collar.

He could feel his nails sink into where they could not.

He didn’t remember telling his body to move, but it did, and it moved fast. A swipe across the Hunter’s face (somehow closer now, as if it had been trying to observe), and the creature’s grip loosened enough for him to slip free.

He landed, stumbled, and stumbled again. He found his back legs couldn’t support him anymore, his limbs all bent in strange ways he didn’t have time to ponder. He forced himself onto fours, miraculously finding balance and grabbing it. He pulled himself down the mountain while hearing heavy footfalls behind him, the Hunter sprinting through the snow. It was terrifying; the creature had never moved so fast.

But it was also liberating. He could outrun it.

[attr="class","yukipost"]Time passed during the chase. He wasn’t given a moment’s rest, running until his strange body began to wear. The adrenaline continued to mix with pain from his side, the wound remaining fresh from all his movement.

He had to end this. He would be dead in the next hour, let alone twelve. The Hunter would catch up and shoot him without hesitation.

His nose was on the path of crisp air. He broke through the threshold of fir trees, finding ahead of him, a sheer drop.

He skidded to a stop and turned around.

The Hunter burst through the trees, rifle in hand, already taking aim.

The bullet shot past Yuki, missing, but carving into the dirt, practically leaving a small crater. His eyes widened, ears ringing from the sound of it. How?

Another shot. And another. And another. He leaped and rolled, dodging by the skin of his teeth, clumsily maneuvering his once-familiar legs as he skirted death by mere inches.

The Hunter, frustrated, planted his feet firmly into the ground. In front of his barrel was an easy target: The pest cornered against a wall, pinched between the trees.

This one. Yuki summoned all his strength into his legs, and leaped.

The explosion echoed past the trees. It reached into the belly of the mountain, and the mountain awakened.

From its peak came the swallowing wave of an avalanche.

It rushed past one corner of the mountain, engulfing stone and fir whole, flattening shrubs. It overflowed until it had swept its mass off the cliff, sending all its clutter into the bank of infinite sky.

When the roar of the mountain silenced, its wrath having as abrupt an end as its entry, a single tree shook.

Its trunk was bent. Its lower branches were shaved clean. The only reason it hadn’t been swept along with the rest was because it had clung against a rock.

Out from its topmost branches came a shivering, white ball.

It stopped as a blue window popped in front of it, obscuring its path. It bumped against it, causing it to disappear.
