A burst of pixels and light filled the woods for a brief moment as a young pink-haired male stepped forth. Dakota stood there blinking his eyes trying to adjust to the shaded woods that he found himself in. He still wasn’t used to this whole teleporting thing or whatever this was. He had only been a part of this crazy world for maybe 48 hours if that. He still was frightened to think about the tutorial he went through. Why was he here in the woods though? Was there something here he was meant to find? It was all vague. A screen popped up asking if he wanted to go to the Hollow Hills. Nothing more than that. Being the curious cat he is, he obviously clicked yes. Now he was lost and had no way of going home.

” This environment doesn’t look too friendly…” He muttered to himself as he carefully walked through the dense forest. There were plants and fungi that he had never seen before. What was more startling were the tracks. They almost appeared human but their feet were smaller and missing a toe. A four-toed child maybe? He didn’t want to leave anything to chance though, after his run-in with the coyotes from hell nothing could be assumed.

A break in the tree canopy above gave him quite the view. A large jagged mountain ripped up above him. Was he in another canyon or ravine? This one was much more fertile, so surely there had to be a stream or something nearby. Mountains were usually carved up by natural springs and running glacial waters from their snow tops. If he followed them, he should reach the bottom. The only trick was to find them before something else found him.

Past some heavy fronds, there came first the sharp scent of rust, and a loud, unceremonious crunch.
There was a figure crouching in the clearing. Speckled light from between the leafy canopy revealed it to be white-furred, a pattern of spots leading to a thick tail. Its head was bowed out of view.
Underneath its feet was a spread of thick, twisting matter, torn and shredded, its colors indescribable due to the shadow being cast by both the predator and the trees. It shook every so often as the animal repeatedly bit into it, emitting something disturbingly similar to a person’s squeal.
The animal paused. It lifted its head, liquid dribbling from its chin as it turned slit pupils to the direction of unfamiliar footsteps.
It had heard him.

Dakota pushed through the forest without any issue. He was careful where he stepped and made sure all of his senses were on high alert. After that ‘Tutorial’ he wasn’t taking chances. The forest and mountain were eerie though. Other than the occasional bird chirping, he really did not hear anything. It was dark under the canopy and the shadows twisted and knotted the trees themselves. He really didn’t feel all too comfortable here but this is where Earth-chan wanted him to be. His heart kept racing and racing. He really wishes Fenix was here. Wait! Fenix was here, he just needed to call for him. Right as he was about to cup his mouth and whistle, a piercing squeal nearby caused him to stop in his tracks. While he wasn’t familiar with what animal would make that sort of sound, he knew that it was one in pain.

Carefully, Dakota started to make his way to the sound. Up ahead, he could see the sun peaking through the treetops. A clearing? Slowly, he crept behind a tree. What he saw made his eyes swell and almost caused him to scream. A leopard? Where the fuck was he?! Leopards were not in Nevada or anywhere in the United States. Was he somewhere in Central or South America? The sight alone was enough to cause the boy to be scared. It was when he noticed that the beast was observing his direction that he nearly shit himself. Maybe it was an unconscious act or maybe Fenix knew his master was in trouble, but all of a sudden the fox appeared. While it normally nuzzled Dakota, today its ears were pointed back and his attention was totally on the leopard. Before Dakota could really say anything, Fenix phased through the brush and crept into the clearing. Possibly to give Dakota a chance to run? Still, the boy stood there frozen. Just observing the beast before him.

Spiritual wisps drew from the newcomer’s necklace and formed a fox, one that moved forwards, towards it, its wariness clear from its ears and careful approach.
The leopard visibly tensed. Its eyes flicked between the spirit and its presumed summoner, widening with something like realization. It was a player. And they were terrified.
It opened its mouth, but all that came out was warbled growling. Shit.
Under its paws, its prey had stopped moving, having long since whimpered the last of its cries. The pool underneath it stretched outward, a dark liquid under the canopies, reeking of rust. The leopard’s feet were coated in it.
It turned to face the frozen stranger, eyes wide with unspoken panic before it dove forwards, moving to weave past the fox and bowl the man with the pink hair over before he could escape carrying the wrong idea.

Shit… Did Fenix’s appearance cause the beast to go on attack mode? Dakota scrambled. As he tried to start back stepping, the brush behind him would cause him to trip and fall flat on his ass. This was it, this was the end. Fenix on the other hand was much braver than Dakota. The fox screeched at the leopard. As it charged the pair, the leopard tried to weave past Fenix but due to their positioning, the fox was able to leap upward and travel through the leopard’s belly as it lunged at Dakota.

Dakota was unconscious about what he was doing and how he was doing it but a faint white glow filled his eyes and Fenix’s own. As the fox would phase through the beast, he would cause minor damage but enough to hopefully cause the monster to give pause and retreat before disemboweling Dakota. All the boy could do was whimper and hope that his bladder didn’t release upon him.

It still landed. Its legs slammed into the earth in front of Dakota, missing its mark but not by much. The leopard was now mere inches away from his legs. It raised its eyes to him.
And then wheezed.
It hacked at air for a moment, body shuddering as the spiritual burn dispersed, and with it, its form. The leopard changed.
Fur melted away to a displeased-looking fellow on his knees, one hand braced over his gut as if he’d been decked there. “Damn it,” he cleared his throat, coughing a bit more. Dakota’s heart was pounding. He flinched as the beast lept in the air. Bringing his hands before him, Dakota already accepted his fate. To be the dessert of this mighty beast. Thank god for Fenix and his courage. It seemed that his phasing through the beast, caused the leopard to miss his mark. Scrambling backward, Dakota didn’t know if that trick would work twice. Fenix growled and hissed at the leopard. He was crouching, ready to spring back through the leopard’s body when all of a sudden a weird phenomenon began to happen.

The leopard began to cough and hack. As it did so, layers of fur peeled away revealing flesh. While the beast changed, Dakota slid back a few more feet and now positioned himself in a manner that would make it easier for him to bolt up and run if need be. That was when the leopard no longer looked like a leopard but a man. A man who looked rather annoyed and uncomfortable. Fenix’s attack must have knocked the air out of him or something. Was he a human with a class that turned him into a leopard? Like some sort of werewolf?

Cautiously, Dakota stood up and outstretched his hand to the leopard-man. Perhaps a sign of peace? “Here, let me help you up.” His voice was still a bit shaky given his recent fright but he was still a decent human who wasn’t going to just kick a man when they were down. “Mind telling me what it was? Because what I was thinking was I was about to be your after meal mint.”

He turned back to the clearing. From this angle, under all that shadow, the corpse of the thing he’d been biting did look like a shredded mound of flesh. “It’s not human.”
He walked back to it, being careful not to touch the little fox spirit still floating about. His shoes sank into the pool of blood, one raising to nudge the wrecked biomatter into the light. Its colors revealed an uncanny pattern of green and brown, decent camouflage against the forest. Where a head was supposed to be attached was instead a halo of shorn leaves the length of long hair.
“Echo Vine,” Yuki explained. “Hides in the trees. Lures people and animals in to eat them.”
His expression soured as he kicked the flowery corpse, sending its umber blood splattering on the grass. “Very good at copying the sounds of people it eats.” A desecrator of the voices of the dead.

As the pair clasped hands, Dakota felt the grime on the man’s hand. He took a quick glance at it before rubbing whatever the debris was off on his pant legs. His eyebrow raised at the man’s plea to understand. Still, Dakota couldn’t help but remember the leopard leaping at him just a moment ago. Pretty hard to think that leap was a leap of “Stop, don’t run” instead of “Stop, let me eat you.”

Dakota leaned a bit to his left to look past the man and towards the lump of blood and flesh that lay on the ground behind him. From this vantage, he couldn’t really make out what it was. He didn’t think it was a human but in this world, it wouldn’t surprise him to see people’s appearances change. That was before the leopard man explained what it was. As the man walked over to the corpse, Dakota hesitantly followed. While he kept a distance, he could tell now that the creature was just that a creature. It did not look human. The disturbing fact that the man told him made him shiver. “How terrible. I’ve never heard of anything like that outside of science-fiction.” His mind drifted to think about the Mockingjays that were prevalent in that franchise.
“Well, it's a good thing that you were able to handle it on your own. Though, I have to admit I wouldn’t have thought a human was hiding behind those eyes.” Dakota still kept a decent distance between the two. Fenix on the other hand was up close to the Echo Vine. Inspecting it with his little snoot. That and the leopard man. “Does your class let you become animals or something? I’ve never heard of anybody having such a skill.”

As Dakota asked about his powers, he worked on wiping himself clean. There was no elegance to it, just plain scraping off muck with his hands and flicking it all over the place. Everything was already a mess anyway.
“Forgot what it’s called,” he admitted. It had ‘prime’ in it, that he’s sure. Like prime beef. “I can just turn into a snow leopard. It’s useful.” He snorted. “Most of the time.” When he could keep it in check.
He peered at the fox sniffing around the dead Echo Vine and his shoes. Cute. Pettable, if he didn’t know petting it would set his soul on fire.
“Never seen someone like you either.” He shrugged. “The players with pets I know have… pets. Not—” he squinted at the wisps and the glow of the little fox. “—Ghosts?”

The dirt and blood didn’t cause Dakota to flinch. In fact he grew up hunting and preparing meats often. His dad loved to go squirrel and rabbit hunting. Plus they had to put down some coyotes here and there. He was just curious to think how a man can transform into a leopard. “A snow leopard? That’s pretty cool. I saw a pair at the Nevada zoo once when I was a kid. Aren’t they native to Asia? Is that where your from?”
Fenix had returned to stand by Dakota. The fox phased through him but at moments became solid and brushed his leg like a common house cat. He guessed Fenix no longer felt that the man was a threat. The notion of him being a ghost did make the fox give the man a yelp and glare. Dakota chuckled and nudged the fox with his hand. “He doesn’t know better.” He leaned back up. “He doesn’t like the term ghost. Prefers the term spirit from what I’ve gathered.”
He took a step closer to the man, no longer being so stand-offish. “Truth he told Fenix kinda found me during my tutorial. Turned out he was a part of my class. I’m a Tribal Shaman. Makes me wonder who makes these classes. Low key a little racist with me being a Native American but whatever. It’s got some fun perks I guess. Nothing as scary as that leopard form of yours though.” He gavea chuckle and smile hoping the man would smile in return. He seemed pretty cold so far. Perhaps it had to do with whatever trials he had to overcome? Either way, Dakota was brought here for a reason. Who’s to say it’s not meet this man?

The fox withdrew, the wisps around its body dispersing into solid matter. It brushed against the man, looking quite fond. The look it shot him told him he held opposite impressions.
He blinked, confused until its owner clarified. “Ah. Spirit,” he amended, tilting his head and looking apologetically at the fox.
Yuki didn’t move as the newcomer approached, though his gaze was steady, observant. He listened as the man gave his story, his face twisting a bit as he processed a chunk of new information. A shaman. That made sense. “Unfortunate,” he said, not being a stranger to having reservations about their assigned class. “But it seems strong. It hit strong.” He patted his stomach.
Yuki didn’t smile, not out of maliciousness. He seemed quietly conflicted about this encounter. They had clarified the misunderstanding. The opponent was dead. His eyes flipped from the corpse strewn on the ground to the chatty man who hadn’t known what it was.
“Do you… need to go somewhere?” Both a question and an offer. “This is not the last Echo. They are connected throughout the forest, and I plan on killing them, unless you need help getting to safety.”

Karaul Tarkhaty? Dakota had never heard any of those words. Was this a place? The sounds sounded guttural. Slavic? Maybe some Asian country? It could be one of those former Soviet Union countries, one of the -stans. Truth be told, Dakota was not the best when it came to school. He really didn’t know many countries other than the ones that were in the news. “Where is Karaul Tarkhaty? I’m not familiar with that place.” He said with a puzzled expression.

Dakota looked around the trees that lined the clearing. Expecting to see a pair of eyes somewhere. “I’m not headed towards anywhere in particular. I guess Earth-chan decided I needed to come here for some reason or another. Perhaps to grow stronger?” He was only level 2. Nothing to be proud of. It was not like he was some big-shot high-level player like he had seen in LA. Even the man before him seemed stronger. He was more confident, that was for certain. It might be wise for him to stick with the Leopard man for a bit. Learn about these Echo Vines and the world that they find themselves in.

Fenix had already grown tired of their conversation and seemed to start to go wondering about it on his own. He couldn’t go too far from Dakota, but he was able to at least walk towards the treeline again, sniffing to see if he could find something interesting. Dakota opted to let the fox be for the moment. “Do you mind if we tag along? I’m curious to see what sort of creatures these Echo Vines are, not to mention what other creatures might be lurking around here. If it is too much a bother, we can go on by ourselves.”
