With the duck in hand all they needed to do now was… wait, what?! As Rory tried to leave the pond and get back towards the others, he found himself tripping over the reeds and tall grass. They almost seemed to have grown around him, and they were all so disorienting that he couldn’t even tell where he was anymore! By the time he was finally able to stand, the area he was in had a different feel to it. [break][break]

Rory pushed through the tall grass, breaking free from the reeds to see that he was now in sort of small clearing. He couldn’t see anything from before, not the ogre, not his allies, not even the pond he was just at! Instead, right in the middle of the clearing was another duck, sitting up on the very top of a large pile of golden eggs.[break][break]

”Holy shit! Jackpot!” Rory quickly scrambled over to the eggs, grabbing the first egg he saw and tapping his hand against it. This wasn’t just an illusion, these were solid gold! He felt his lips curl into a wicked grin as he leaped with joy. He was rich! All this chaos maybe wasn’t so bad if he got to get all this out of it! [break][break]

The money-hungry man started climbing the pile of golden eggs, but that thought stuck in his mind. All this chaos… what about the others? Where were Nyke and Tali? Sure, these were gold, and a lot of it, but… Rory stopped climbing the pile, and glanced down at the egg in his hand. Was this really worth it? What if he could still get back to the other’s and help them? [break][break]

With tears in his eyes, he slid back down the pile, and reluctantly placed the golden egg back on it. ”Just my luck… but… DAMNIT! I CAN’T JUST LEAVE THEM! I HAVE TO GET BACK-”[break][break]

As soon as the words left his mouth, Rory found himself back in the muck at the pond. Had that been a nightmare?! With the way things were, there was no telling, but he wasted no time jumping back to his feet. Sure enough, he was back in the action, with his allies in front of him. Tali, Nyke, and… the Ogre! [break][break]

”COIN FLIPPER!” Rory screamed as he flung his hands forward toward the Ogre. Tali must have laid all kinds of hurt on the beast judging by the look of its arm. Rory had been so focused playing defense with his dark shield earlier, he had neglected the other part of his ability– it could reverse buffs! He watched as the Ogre groaned out and suddenly seemed to slow down, its massive buff flipped into a massive detriment. He came back to help his allies so that all three of them could get out of here alive, and that was sure as hell what he planned to do! [break][break]

Pain thundered through Dantalion's torso and made his breaths ragged, he could feel the sweat slicking his palms and he tightened his grips on his swords. Was this going to be it? In the damn tutorial and already dead? As he readied himself to take a step forwards and find out just how far he could push himself, a popup informed him that all of the berries had been located and a blue light flared up from behind him deeper into the woods. The end was here. He sucked in a deep breath and glanced to the side to see both of his allies approaching, at least they hadn't just abandoned him... Not bad for some sinners.

When the Ogre groaned again and seemed to have some kind of effect take over it, Tali wasted no time in slamming his shortswords back together into a bow, the string snapping back into place with a reverberating twang and a flash of blue light. He drew his arm back and launched an arrow straight into the Ogre's face, sending it staggering back another step. "We're done here, let's leave before it gets back to his senses." He snarled out, pain evident in his voice and he turned, stumbling towards the blue light. "I'm hit pretty bad, you two better not leave me behind!" He growled at them, though there was a smile edged onto his pained expression, he was pretty sure they wouldn't abandon him now.

The light was drawing closer, they just needed to keep moving though the pain lancing through Dantalion's side told him he was going to need a fair bit of time to try and heal this off, or find someone with some healing abilities. The Ogre had managed to shake its head and seemed to regain some semblance of control and was shambling back towards them, though this time it was slower and didn't seem to have as much power behind it. Dantalion only hoped that one of the other two could do something about it because firing that arrow had hurt something fierce and Warlord wasn't ready to come back just yet.

As Dantalion was gathered Nyke breathed a sigh of relief. He attempted to hurry them alone trying to give Dantalion a hand, but as the monster followed his worried expression was brought back up. "I have an idea, follow me." He lead the group to the large lake from before.[break][break]

He figured in this state Dantalion probably couldn't swim, but with Rory and Nyke's help they all three could make it to the other side; the dumb thrashing ogre would follow. He looked behind him to make sure that was the case and surely enough it was. "Into the lake, we'll help him cross." He yelled allowed.[break][break]

Nyke just had to wait for the perfect moment to strike, he knew he still had a card up his sleeve.

With the Boss weakened, Tali's next attack with his silvery bow seemed to stop the monster dead in its tracks. Nyke had found the last berry, causing a light to appear in the distance. That meant… "We're near the end!" [break][break]

Rory himself wasn't looking too pretty with all the mud he'd gotten on himself from the marsh earlier, and wasn't in the best shape either after the encounter with the tree monster. Even despite that, Tali was worse off, having managed to go toe to toe with the boss while the other two got the final items… Rory had to make sure they all got out okay.[break][break]

Nyke had the plan to escape through the lake, which Rory backed. "The lake..? Oh! Maybe the Boss can't swim!" When they reached the water's edge, Rory outstretched an arm to Tali. He and Nyke seemed to have the same idea here. There was no way they were leaving anyone behind![break][break]

The Ogre roused again, once again starting its charge towards the group. Rory really hoped they were right here, if they could just get through the lake, the light of the exit wouldn't be much further away…[break][break]

Towards the water? A potentially good idea but Tali knew that his ability to swim was compromised at the moment. However he wasn't exactly in the best state to against his allies' wishes and at least one of them seemed to have some kind of plan so he just done his best to stagger with them towards the lake. At one point he stopped and turned back, firing another arrow into the Ogre to try and slow it down once more. He hissed out a breath and moved into the water, feeling the cold fluids lap against his legs and slip into his boots, unpleasant but he was dealing with worse.

"I'm going to need help, my ribs are fucked, won't be able to swim properly." He choked out as the cold reached his belt line and he tried to bring himself up to float but it was agony and using his bow like this was going to be impossible. It was at this point that he felt that contact with a creature from beyond. With a snarl he held out one hand and snapped his fingers. In a flare of azure flame Warlord appeared once more. However this time Tali just howled a command and the horse instantly surged forwards into a wash of flame and power, slamming into the Ogre and dispersing instantly.

"I'm all out, it's up to you guys now." He groaned, feeling grey slipping into his vision but he shook it off, clutching onto Rory to try and keep himself going, he held his bow limply with one hand and just focused on breathing now, that was all he could do. He really hoped that whatever the others had planned, it was good...

It prefers the skies, to catch "players" who are foolish enough to come into its territory. It likes to fly down, fly them up into the sky, and then drop them from as high as up possible, preferably on something sharp. Or maybe something on fire, or even on another one of those pesky "players". It doesn't speak the human tongue, and it doesn't understand it either, but it knows it's supposed to kill these players, just like the rest of her kin and all the other creatures she saw. One thing they all had in common was that they hated these weird flesh bags with strange powers. She swooped down talons at the ready. She was a Strix, a half woman, half bird, she didn't like that some of these flesh bags looked like her, but they were de-feathered, weak. The beating of wings, a screech on the horizon; one could almost miss it amidst the splashing of the water, but not Nyke. His head turned back eyes widened as he saw the incoming Strix. If it wasn't for the fact he was a ways away from it he'd surely would have been grabbed. Instead, he'd duck down into the water before it got to him, watching the angry Strix flap back up to regain her composure. Popping back out of the murky depths he attempted to hurry, his anxiety making panic set in.

"This is just unfair now!" Anger began to swirl up right alongside his panic.

If there was one thing on their side it was the fact that the Ogre from before seemed highly upset over the incoming Strix. He wasn't sure if it was the brimming of a territory dispute or if they each had staked claim to Nyke and his compatriots lives already; but whatever it was he figured they could try and use it to their advantage.

"Out of the water and into the woods, don't panic we got this!" Nyke wasn't sure if he was yelling that to his teammates or himself at this point.

As they got to the lake's bank he rose up pushing Dantalion out of the lake as much as he could. At this point the man would have to suffer some hurt, he'd try his best but they needed to move. He hoped that by making it to the woods the Strix wouldn't be able to swoop down as easily due to the trees and large canopy.

"Hopefully it can't get us as easy in the woods!" He spoke urgently as he hopped up out of the water himself attempting to pull Dantalion the rest of the way out of the water.

Rory was helping Tali across the pond along with Nyke when another enemy appeared. He thought it was a giant bird at first, but as it swooped down he could see that it was actually some kind of hybrid, a mix of bird and woman. [break][break]

Nyke seemed to be its target, but hiding under the water served him well enough to keep the monster off his back. As it returned to the air, Rory stretched a hand towards it, once again activating that so-called “Core” of his class. [break][break]

A spectral die rolled itself above the creature’s head, landing on a 2. Rory heaved a sigh of relief as his eyes read the debuff that now afflicted it: a 10% decrease to speed. It wasn’t the highest number in the world, but in a situation like this, he’d take whatever he could get! [break][break]

With Tali using his horse to attack the Ogre they left behind, Rory didn’t think they could use it again to escape from the new monster, but Nyke’s idea of escaping through the woods seemed like a great one. If it couldn’t see or fly at them so easily, maybe they really could get out of here! [break][break]

it was definitely his most used skill so far, but for a valid reason: Its versatility was near endless! Unlike before when he had used it to block attacks or flip the Ogre’s buff, this time he spread the shield as big and large as he could muster, spreading the energy in a veil beyond the tree to hide them from the bird-woman above. The grinding of his ribs and the pain lancing down his side forced him to swallow bile and shake another wave of nausea away. He had experienced pain, he had went through training to keep going no matter what. However he hadn't been in a true life or death moment until now and here he was, wounded and surrounded by sinners and demons. Perhaps his parents would be proud of him, he'd need to ask them when he found them. He snarled out in agony as he was pushed out of the water and he stumbled forwards, taking breaths in through clenched teeth.

He had been so focused on stopping himself from vomiting that he hadn't even noticed the second monster until now. At least the Ogre had decided to leave them well enough alone or it was far enough away not to bother them just yet, didn't matter which. Turning around, Tali steadied his hip against a tree and fired an arrow off at the Strix, only barely clipping one of its wings and only thanks to the debuff that Rory had put on it. He then turned and moved under the tree cover. He focused hard, pushing the pain down as they moved closer to the light that hopefully spelled freedom.

"The trees should make it harder to fly for that thing, we need to keep moving. I can fire off a few shots if it should try and dive us again and we can probably take it if it tries to land..." He hissed out, taking a moment to lean his shoulder against a tree and straighten himself out with a grunt of pain before moving forwards again. He had no medical supplies at the moment, he'd definitely need to get some help once they were out of here so that his ribs wouldn't end up brittle by the time he was fighting fit again.

Nyke kept up the pace using most of his body to prop up Dantalion. He was trying his best, and recognizing Dantalion as their main form of damage caused him to prioritize his health. He already knew the man had been severely injured fighting off a beast he had no business facing off against. The same beast that was pulling itself out of the lake as the Strix circled above. As they entered the forest his eyes searched all around trying to follow the path of both beast.

”Man, they really don’t wanna make it easy for us, do they?!” Rory hated risking a glance back, but doing so proved that it wasn’t just the bird woman chasing them- the ogre was still on their tail too, even if slowed from the lake! Damnit![break][break]

As the group took cover under the trees, Nyke had the idea to lead them towards some denser wood. Rory liked this, and even if it took a second longer, it would likely be easier for him and Dantalion to keep up. They really didn’t need to keep sprinting full force with the condition they were in.[break][break]

”The bird caught us off guard, but the objective is still the same, right? We really just need to find a way out of here.” Rory rubbed the back of his head due to the gloom of the situation. ”Or well, beat the ogre… I like our chances more trying to escape”[break][break]

They were so close, he could see the light through the trees, they just had to make it there. Dantalion grit his teeth and hissed out a breath as they moved, at least he didn't have to dodge when the damn Strix launched a feather at them, he was glad for his allies at least a little bit. At least the ogre was slowed down for now. He stopped for a moment and readied his bow once more, aiming it upwards before they moved into deeper tree cover. With a grunt of pain from the force of pulling the string, he launched another glowing arrow to clip the Strix's wing again, this time on purpose, if he could convince it to stop flying and fuck off that would be for the best.

With that done he turned and continued moving deeper into the woods, making sure to stick to tree trunks as best he could not only for support but also because it was where the branches above were thickest and it would make it far harder to launch attacks at them from above. "Keep moving, the light is getting brighter, we must be near the escape point. Do not move through any clearings unless you have to." He snarled, though it was hopefully obvious he was just in pain and not actually angry at them, they were useful sinners and he was not about to complain about it, they could have left him here to die after all.

There couldn't be much left to go unless they truly did have to fight the Ogre... He reached out for Warlord but he could tell that the horse wasn't ready to be summoned again which bothered him deeply, it would have hurt a hell of a lot to ride a horse with his ribs like this but more pain for less time was better as he could get somewhere safe to rest.

A sudden screech and cracking of woods from behind them caused Rory to jump and turn to see what had happened. The Ogre was still trying to push through into their thicker forest, but the bird woman had actually flown down near it. It seemed as though the two had gotten into a fight, with the Ogre smashing a tree while swinging wildly at the bird, and the woman slashing the Boss’ torso with her sharp talons. Rory was about to cheer that the monsters were finally fighting each other and not chasing them… when the bird woman threw a slew of feathers at the Ogre.

The Ogre stopped fighting against her after that, and while it might not have been obvious to most…. Rory’s Passive, [Scoping the Odds], let him see the [Charmed] Debuff that now afflicted the Boss. ”Uhoh. She charmed him… UH OH!” Now that she had the massive Ogre under her command, the Strix used him to haphazardly snap the trees that blocked her sight of the party. The bird herself was now RUNNING at them along the ground, comedically moving like a chicken–a massive chicken with bloody talons and fangs!

”On second thought, time to RUNNN NYKE!” Since the man had offered, Rory tried to hop up on his back. He didn’t want to hog, of course, and tried to make the space as accommodating as possible for Tali. While they ran, he activated the shield from his Coin Flipper once more, this time directly behind them to prevent the Strix from throwing any of those nasty feathers at any of them.
