The fact that this dream-like apparition had been sitting on a boulder whilst waiting for him had been a tad interesting to the man. Was this his brain's way of portraying a cool individual?? It made a modicum of sense for sure. "Don't worry about it. These things happen I guess." Even with the system having notified them of the fact that they would need to survive, this had still felt too much like a dream for Balthazar to realize the amount of danger that he was truly in. Danger that he would soon come to understand.

With the very ground beneath them beginning to give way, Balthazar would move away from his current location. It was a good thing that he had done so too, given the fact that a being with stark white flesh and yet was devoid of eyes had just broken through the earth. Its boney, anorexic body had certainly been a rather repulsive sight and yet.. It still hadn't set in for Balthazar that any of this was real. If anything, he had simply felt like this was his brain's way of warning him of the magics that he had attempted. "I'm not quite sure what's going on here, guy, but I suppose that it's better if we work together." For all intensive purposes, it might have seemed that Balthazar was all too lax about this situation. That would come to change rather soon.

"Specter, unleash thy wrath upon this horrendous abomination." With that command, the spirit that had been under his command had begun to fly towards the bony creature. As it had done so, the spirit's face would elongate on it's own and it's very being would become all the more gruesome. Shortly after having received the command, the spirit would slash out at the creature and would deal approximately F damage. A horrid amount all together, from what Balthazar had come to understand. "Well that's.. disappointing."

As this all had been happening, the system would force two things to happen. Given the fact that they hadn't chosen to form a party, the world would go ahead and offer a prompt between the two of them, giving them that very option. Even if he hadn't truly understood what it had meant, Balthazar would accept the party invite. It was ultimately up to Courtney if they had wished to accept it as well. Additionally, another notification window would appear within Balthazar's view during this time, informing him of the fact that there were now two items added to their inventory. Supposedly they had come from some kind of random chance event offered by a merchant?? Either way, there were two consumable items within his inventory now.

Not that in which he had shared with his now deceased child and wife but the home in which he himself had grown up in as a child. As the reasoning as to why he was here?? Well it was rather simple: He had been here to acquire any potential goods that his family might have left behind. They had been rather eccentric collectors after all. Having believed in magic from the beginning, he was sure that they would have gathered decent items that might have become all the better in this new world. [break][break] Even with that having been the reason for his arrival in New York though, there was a bit of an issue with this plan... The city had changed so drastically that it was going to be near impossible for him to locate the place!! How was he supposed to reach a penthouse when the buildings had elongated themselves past realistic proportions?? The fact that so many buildings had been trampled via the activities of others up to this point as well... Honestly, none of this was ideal. For all the searching that he had done, he simply couldn't find the home that he had set out for. [break][break] Whilst he was unable to locate the one thing that he had been searching for in this moment, there was another thing here that had managed to maintain his attention at least. From what he had picked up, thanks to others talking about it, there was supposedly a mission in the area. One that was open to any individual that was willing to take it. The mission was referred to as Gutter Crawl and had more or less required individuals to head down into the sewers to clean up a few nasty creatures. A newcomer?? And one that was acting like kind of a jerk, at that?? Well this was.. something. "It's not like I'm just standing here for my own health, y'know?? I've been deciding on whether or not to accept the quest that was presented to me. If you're that worried about it though then party up with me. Easier to take the things down together than on our own." Blunt and to the point. Of course, now that he had said that much, Balthazar was more or less going to be forced to get involved. With that having been the case, Balthazar would proceed to dig out his phone from his pocket before sending a party invite to the man beside him.

Whether the man would accept his request or not, Olliver would accept the mission from the traffic cop. He would then turn his attention about towards the individuals that they were meant to be facing. "Those of you that wish to assist, come out now." Almost as though they were answering to his call, various spirits would begin to make themselves known to the man. From the bunch, Balthazar would pick randomly. He would go on to choose the spirit of a little girl, perhaps no older then twelve. "You'll do nicely. Let's get your revenge."

It might have looked a bit worrying to those outside of his perspective. For some random man to force spirits to materialize, only to select a child, the other spirits having receded back to their own plane after having not been chosen. "If you're going to come with," he would say to the man that had just approached him, "then I suppose that it'll be best for you to know my name. I'm Balthazar. Now.. Let's clean up this mess, I suppose."

He hadn't really meant to be as cold as he was to the individual but was simply playing off of the initial vibe that the man himself had set. Not that this would affect the spirit in any way. If anything, it would seem as though the little spirit girl had been prepared to get this revenge that Balthazar had promised her. "Distract the trolls for me." He had been commanding the spirit as he had said this but it was understandable if others hadn't taken it that way. Either way, the spirit would fly forth towards one of the trolls. As she had made her way towards the beast, she would fully materialize, her appearance having been wreathed in a wild tangle of hair, its body clad in wispy rags that flutter and stream around it. It would close the distance after a bit of movement and proceed to swat out at the troll, punching with her miniscule power. As this had been happening, of course, Balthazar, would attempt to circle around the troll so as to get behind it.

Los Angeles, USA. A place that Balthazar would never have imagined visiting in the past. Especially now, what with the world having changed to such a degree. Honestly, Balthazar hadn't even thought that he would successfully bypass that tutorial that he had gone through. For a lack of better words, it was hell. He had damn near lost his life... But that's all in the past now. At least he was here now.

"Alright.. So it's real. It's all real and you're really here. Somehow the world has changed and now you might have a chance to get them back. So what should you do?? Get stronger. It's the only way to survive this hellscape." While he might have seemed a bit crazy at the moment, that's just how it was. Focusing on himself was all that there really was left for him. And as weird as that was, that had included talking to himself at times. "So how should I get started??"

Unsure of what to do at the moment, Balthazar had decided to meander about the streets. He had been hoping to come across someone that could teach him the ways of this world or a better way to improve his own strength. Throughout this wandering, Balthazar would come across some kind of traffic cop. The most peculiar thing about this person though?? The fact that they had an exclamation point lingering overhead.

Figuring that if anyone could help him with getting a few answers, Balthazar would approach this individual. Upon doing so, the traffic cop would turn towards him and say, "Jiminy Crickets, how do these guys keep coming back? We just shooed them out of her last week. Yo, I’ve got too many other things on my plate. Mind going and scaring off these trolls so that people can get by safely? They shouldn’t need to much to spook. A loud noise, flashy lights, maybe something even stinky.” Figuring that this was some kind of quest, Balthazar would idly scratch his head. "This would be easier if I had a partner or something."

After a few moments of having communicated with the spirit before him, another one of those semi-transparent notification windows would display before him. This time around though, it didn't offer him a prompt that he had felt all that reassured about. Rather than offering class option, the system would go as far as to offer him a single sentence. Tutorial locked until all parties have arrived. If there had indeed been other individuals that were involved in this little venture of his then they must be his party members, right?? Either that or he was going to have to try and face them down. Those were the typical themes of such situations in the novels and games after all. But again, why would he be dreaming of such a thing?? Had his mind finally collapsed in on itself??

Not quite sure what else there really was for him to do other than to wait, Balthazar would anxiously rub at the back of his head. His eyes had been cold. Despondent. And his energy had been lacking. Even with those factors having been present in the moment though, Balthazar had figured that he might as well kick things off on his own. "Tell me, Spirit, what else is in this area?? Have you come upon any other individuals??" Unsurprisingly, the spirit had been rather forthcoming with information. It would proceed to inform Balthazar of two individuals that it had passed by earlier on. One, a monster of terrifying proportions, that had supposedly lead to the death of the spirit initially. And the other a man with disheveled black hair and dark blue eyes. From the sound of it, that man was likely the other party that he had been waiting for. "Right... Well then take me to that man. I am sure that that is who I am searching for."

With nothing more than a curt nod, the spirit would turn about and begin to lead Balthazar in the direction of the human that was supposedly in the area. It would take a bit for him to ultimately run into the man but once he had, he would quickly take note of the katana that the man had been wielding. 'A weapon.. Lucky him, I suppose. If I had one of those, I'm sure that things would be a bit more entertaining at least.' Still believing that this was nothing more than the machinations of his mind, Balthazar would confidently approach the individual. "I take it that you're the one that I was waiting for??" Almost instantly after he had asked the man this question, a notification window would appear before both parties. All parties have arrived. Tutorial goal now being calculated... Survive. And with that, the ground beneath them would begin to shake.

Loss.. It would seem as though loss was all that followed Balthazar as of late. He had lost his fiancé, his daughter, and even his job. It had truly felt as though the world was against him for awhile now and naturally, such a thing would send the poor man spiraling. He had to get them back.. He had to get them back!!! While all else had fled from the mans mind, that one fact was the only thing that had stuck. But how?? How could he get his family back?? Magic. That was how. Much to his family's dismay, Balthazar had always found himself on the opposite side of the ideology when it came to such things. He had felt as though science was far more capable than mysticism that was likely to be false. His lifestyle up until now had proven that much. And yet?? He would ultimately default back to his families way of thinking. If there was anything that could change the world that he had been living in until now, it would have to be magic.

With a seemingly fractured mind, Balthazar had thrown himself into the ancient texts that his family had been holding onto for centuries. Texts that had supposedly come from his ancestor, a pre-Socratic philosopher, Empedocles. These sacred tomes were said to hold primordial magics that could alter the world in many a way and as such, Balthazar had figured that there would be some way to bring back his family with this. With a cursed magic that one should never use... Having cast all sense of reason to the side, Balthazar had begun to perform the ritual and would attempt to revive his loved ones. It was in that moment that the light that crosses worlds would impact upon the Earth. All that Balthazar had seen was a flash of light.. and he was gone.

The world had been full of players ranging from lower levels to as high as thirty five and yet, for Balthazar, it had felt as though no time had passed at all. In fact, he wasn't even quite sure what was happening at the moment. One instant, he is at home and attempting to revive his family. And the next?? He finds himself quite far from home and in some arid wasteland. Heat had been bearing down upon the half naked man as he had sat there pondering what had just happened. How did he get here?? Where exactly was here?? Even as he had pondered such questions though, there was no answer. Instead, there was simply a holographic display window. One that had offered him but three choices.

Completely out of it and figuring that this must have been some kind of dream, Balthazar would blink a couple of times. "Did I... black out or something?? I must have.. There isn't really any other explanation for what is happening. Still, I guess I should at least give the dang thing an answer. Uh..." Whilst every option there had sounded pretty damn nifty, he couldn't help but choose the one that sounded the most akin to his role in life at the moment. "Occultist?"

With the system having confirmed his class, a holographic loadout of his class and stats would appear before the man. Unbeknownst to him, only he was capable of seeing it. "I.. Damn, I must be tripping much harder than I anticipated. Maybe.. I've been overworking myself in hopes of bringing them back.." From the looks of things, his class had more or less been decent enough. He could unlock different areas of study over time and had seemingly had a brief increase in both his magic and willpower stats. That low vitality score though.. That was admittedly concerning. "I know that this is a dream or something but.. Can I see them again?? With this??" Hoping that he could see his family again, Balthazar would call forth a spirit.

After asserting the effort to call forth his fiancé, Balthazar would watch as a spectral form would appear before his very eyes. Much to his dismay though, this wasn't someone that he had known, let alone his late fiancé. No, this was an individual that had been female in nature and was absolutely torn to shreds.. Even just looking at her had put Balthazar off a bit. "I.. You aren't who I wanted." The spirit didn't seem to care about that fact. Rather than fighting with the man that had called it forth, it had simply remained idle and stared at Balthazar, almost as though it were awaiting direction. Honestly, a large part of him had wished to tell the spirit to fuck off so that he could grieve over his family yet again. For some reason though.. That just didn't feel all that prevalent at the moment. In fact, this was the first time that he had felt this way since before the accident. It was almost as though there was this sense of calm about him..

Trying not to think on it too much, the man would think back to what the class would allow him to do in this instance. From what he could see, this spirit should be able to assist him in combat and ascertaining who and what was in an area. A weird thing for a dream to incorporate but one that he would accept for the time being. "Fine.. Tell me what you know about this area, spirit." From that point on, the ghastly spirit would go on to inform Balthazar of the fact that this is an area known as the badlands. It was something known as a [HIGH-RISK] area and was even supposedly [PVP ENABLED]. All these gaming terms were things that the man could understand. What he couldn't understand was why he would dream of such a setting after months.

Magic. It all started with magic. After having lost his family in a dastardly car accident, Balthazar had nowhere else to turn. Science couldn't bring his family back and prayers to the gods seemed to bear no fruit. There was ultimately nothing that he could do.. except for attempt the things that his family had claimed possible. Supposedly the descendants of a pre-Socratic philosopher, Empedocles, the Tavoularis family had believed themselves to be capable of the old magics. This was nothing more than a delusion shared by the family, that Balthazar had all but held a firm belief against. Left with no other options though, he would attempt to dig through the old tomes of the Tavoularis family that were left behind by Empedocles. It was just as Balthazar had begun to attempt this magic that the second coming of 'the light that crosses worlds' would occur.

Through seeing an attack performed multiple times in a thread you can come to slowly understand it and how it works while still in that thread. Any supernatural effects or magical attacks you come to see will become 10% less effective against you. While buffs from allies become 10% more effective on you. This can stack up to 20%. Magical and supernatural effects regarding this passive are constituted as anything listed as such, fantastical effects that normally couldn't happen in real life(a fireball, a bright wave of light that heals), and celestial effects(holy attacks or defenses as well as demonic.) When starting other threads attacks you've seen before automatically gain 10% towards your passive.[break][break] core [break] The Occultist is a purveyor of the occult and the supernatural. One who studies magic to understand its true meanings and how to utilize it. For you, these areas of study become your strength, allowing you to espouse what you learn and channel energy accordingly. This energy fits into an area of study and allows you a number of effects depending on what you choose to use at the time.[break][break] You can hold 5 areas of study which become engrained in you as an occultist, becoming your bread and butter. To gain a new area of study your careful prodding into the supernatural must be had. By studying creatures and items and even other people geared towards a subject, you can come to learn about these energies and begin to channel them. When studying an object, person or monster you can siphon the energy these things hold right into your very being, filling your body with the knowledge(and energy) of what you're studying. These energies and knowledge can pertain to anything that the item, monster or person encompasses, it is up to you to decide what part you wish to focus on, but it must only be one aspect. You'll gain a new area of study every 25 levels based on what you have been studying mainly. This can be done in and out of combat.[break][break] You can choose to stop your area of study of channeling which will put your core on a cooldown for 2 rounds. area of study one: spiritualismSpiritualism is the study of spirits, ghost and the deceased as soul in our realm. Not to be confused with necromancy which is the study of the dead as a whole. Spiritualism focuses on the spirit. When channeling Spirit energy you become a medium of sorts able to communicate with the dead in various ways. You can channel a spirit in a specific area to learn about that area or those the spirit has come across by talking to them. backstory
Balthazar Tavoularis had lived a relatively simple life for the majority of his existence. He was born October 15th in the year 2001 to a couple with a rather sordid past. His parents hadn't exactly gotten along all that well but at least they had tried to make things work. Ultimately though, they couldn't manage t maintain their relationship for long. That being the case, Balthazar's parents had split when he was rather young. This would result in him living in a rather impoverished neighborhood, yet a weirdly stable home. His parents would maintain a sense of friendship over that time, doing all that they could to ensure that Balthazar felt the love that one as young as he would ever desire.

Things were a bit difficult growing up, due to his familiar situation and living arrangements but they somehow managed to make it work. His parents did everything that they could to help him have a happy childhood and for the most part, he had. The largest exception in this happy childhood would honestly stem from his coming out to his parents. He had admitted to them, at the age of seventeen, that he had been a pansexual. This would lead to a strain in his relationship with his mother but aside from that major factor, they had gotten along well enough. It was.. a complicated affair all together.

Hoping to move past the situation with his mother, Balthazar had thrown himself out into the world at eighteen. From that time, until the light had descended a few years later, Balthazar would accomplish several things. He would find himself having gone through an entire relationship and ultimately ending up rather happy in a better one. He would find work as a data analyst for a small time surgery center. He would even have a kid!! For the most part, things were working out rather well for the young man. That was at least until the car accident.

A few months into his engagement to his fiancé, Emilee Gonzalez, the family had been taking a trip down to Egypt. It was Emilee's birthplace and she had sincerely wished to raise their daughter, Moema, within such a place. This was something that Balthazar had been open to but not something that was ultimately decided upon as of yet. That being the case, the family had decided to take that trip to try and convince Balthazar that it was a decent enough place for them to live. Whilst on their way to the airport, a four way accident would occur between a semi truck, the Tavoularis family, and two other cars. One of the other cars hadn't been paying attention whilst they were driving and would get into an accident with the truck. Hoping to avoid a worse situation, the semi would slam on its break and cause the Tavoularis family's car and another car to slam into them from the back. The situation as a whole had resulted in the death of everyone except for Balthazar.. A freak accident that could have been avoided. One that Balthazar would regret for the rest of his life.

Over the months following the passing of his fiancé and his child, Balthazar would spiral into a downward state of mind. His grief would overtake him to the point that he just stopped showing up to work. He would be forced to sell off various family heirlooms in hopes of even slightly sustaining himself and to pay for the costs of his family's funerals. His life had been in complete and utter shambles. This would continue on for awhile, honestly, until something had snapped inside of the man one day. Nothing had been working for him, no matter how much he had prayed to the gods or tried to trick himself that things would go back to the way that they were. This was no bad dream. It was reality... A reality that he had outright refused to accept. That being the case, Balthazar would give in and attempt to do something that he had swore to never do. He would accept his families crazy theories of having been descendants of some pre-Socratic philosopher and mage. He would flip through the remaining books that his family had left to him before he had departed from their home and would inspect the works of this Empedocles. And he would find a spell that was supposed to bring them back. Logic told him that this was something that would never occur. But Balthazar was beyond logic at this point. One way or another, he would attempt this spell. And in the time that he had decided to do so?? That was when the light would descend upon the earth.
