Another late night, nothing new. The room, a lab, well equipped with equipment for any experiment you could think of. Alastor, alone in the room currently examining the ooze left by his now missing father. It was truly a remarkable specimen. The ooze seemed to be alive but at the same time not. It seemed to have DNA of some sort, but not just of one being but all beings. He just couldn’t figure this out. Alastor rubbed the bridge of his nose a bit tired from his long night of observation. He was determined to crack the code that is the origin of all beings. With a sigh, Alastor grabbed his boba tea, sitting back in his chair taking a long sip. Ah one of his pleasures in life this tea was. As if from nowhere a window pops up in front of Alastor causing him to flail tipping his chair backwards and dropping his tea. His eyes closed rubbing the back of his head. Ow! What was that? When Alastor’s eyes opened he was surprised to see the same screen above him as if it followed him. Standing up quickly he turned to the left then quickly to the right, then the right more. No matter where he turned the window followed. *rubbing his hair frantically he was now alarmed as to why there was a window suddenly floating in front of him. "Wha.wha.what is going oooon?! Oh wait.” Alastor pounded his fist on an open palm smiling. “This must be some kind of VR thing right?” He nodded a few times before freaking out again. “But I’m not wearing a VR headset and I know I’m awake so it’s not a dream!” [break][break] After a few minutes it took him to calm down the window blinked a bit and text seemed to type on its own. When finished Alastor read slowly. It was instructing him to choose a class. A class? What is this a video game? “Seriously? What is this? I don’t have time for this.” He tried to move away from the window but it always somehow was right in front of him. No matter how many times he tried he couldn’t outrun this window. Alastor sighed in defeat. He knew he couldn’t continue his research with this window in the way and it wouldn’t go away until he selected a class. “Fine fine, if it’ll get you to go away I’ll pick one.” Alastor read all three choices taking a few seconds after each choice. Thinking carefully about which one interests him the most. He realized he was kind of enjoying this. Like when he was playing one of his videogames or playing Dungeons and Dragons. It’s was certainly kind of exciting and he did get curious as to what each class would mean for him. “Let’s see..Hm." His eyes kept shifting back to Evolutionist. It especially caught his eye seeing as his whole career was basically studying evolution. Something deep down pushed him to evolutionist. “But what if it makes me evolve into some kind of weird freak amalgamation of different creatures? Or if he lights on fire? Or something." As these thoughts popped into Alastor’s head images came to mind of himself becoming some freak of nature. He shook his head to get those thoughts out of his mind. “Nah, you know what? I bet this class will bring me interesting and amazing abilities.” He grinned while stating “Alright! I’ve chosen! The one that speaks to me most. The class I choose whatever it brings is evolutionist!” With that Alastor pressed evolutionist on the screen and it was selected. A new window popping up. [break][break] The new window had a picture of a pixilated Earth with a smile and under it read. “Approved” Under that read “Earth to Alastor” under that read “Ooze huh?:You ever see that movie with the purple ooze guy? Kinda weird how it went in through the nose. Imagine those purple boogers.” Alastor took a little to actually think about the movie the window was referring to. He thinks he knew which one it meant but there were many ooze related movies. Then his mind went to purple boogers. But his disgust broke him out of the thought as he shook his head. “Don’t really wanna think about that kinda thing. Not when regarding my class. Or the ooze I’m studying." Alastor realized that he was actually getting more and more excited about all this class thing. At first he was kind of shocked but now? Now he was curious. He is going to be part of a real life game. Or even like a character in an anime. How dangerous things will become? What await him? After all, you don’t just get abilities like this without some danger eventually finding its way to you.

A window appeared before Alastor. He placed a finger on the screen and clicked on his inventory. "Usually inventory is meant for owned items but these seem to be my abilities. Seems I can do a couple things right now and some later on as I rise in rank." Alastor scrolled through looking over his abilities. Mostly buffing his stats which, wasn't bad. Certainly was a kind of evolution. He did wonder what it’d be like to be faster or strong or agile. His thought’s wandered mostly of him doing everyday things with more ease. Every day objectives sure would be easier with buffs. Hell he could be better at sports or videogames or even complete research faster. No more needing help carrying crates or equipment to the lab. His thoughts broke as he returned his gaze to the next ability. [break][break] “Core. Sound’s interesting” He read over the ability, then again to make sure he was reading this right. He essentially feeds a corpse of a monster to the ooze becomes a familiar and it gains a rating depending on his rank. He felt a bit uneasy at first. Feeding a dead body to the very essence of every living being. He was basically a necromancer Pokémon trainer. "Weeeelll I mean it is I guess a kind of evolution. Sooo it isn't bothering me too much. Besides the body would just probably sit there and rot anyways. At least it's going to good use. Oh? It also gains abilities when absorbing a body. Only of a monster though." He again read what was in front of him. "Hyper Regeneration. A good regenerative ability is always a plus. Where against big strong enemies or ones you just wanna intimidate. Show them they’re barely making a dent in my health." His “familiar” would get a 50% boost to vitality. Useful considering he was probably a low rank beginner. 50% seemed like quite a boost for a beginner’s familiar. Next was. [break][break] "Consume." Mumbling as he read what it did, he cracked a smile. This next one was a winner. "My familiar gets a buff from damaging enemies? Up to 10%? Very good. That is a pretty good ability. Basically both of us get buffed and flank an enemy or take on individual enemies. But, if the enemy is too strong we can buff our speed and escape. But running wouldn't be as good cause unless the familiar keeps damaging the enemy its buffs fade and would fall behind. I suppose if it somehow had a projectile attack or spell attack it could run and hit the enemies but not guaranteed. Well I can come up with a solution to that later. This is quite funny. Me? Being a tank character in a fight? Normally I’d rather be one to stay in the back buffing others or slinging spells. Will be nice to try tanking for a change I suppose. If anything could also dodge attacks and distract." Then came the final ability. On the list. [break][break] "Dissemble-Consume...I hope this doesn't mean my ooze consumes and absorbs a living creature. Bad enough I already look like a necromancer Pokémon trainer. But, to consume a still living being? Definitely bad for image." His eyes scanned the ability. He was so absorbed in reading the ability he didn’t pay attention to one of the lab monkeys, Jaco, rattling his cage seemingly upset or enraged about something. It wasn’t unusual for the animals to get restless. Alastor breathed a sigh of relief sitting back in the chair he plopped down in. Once again smiling. Actually growing in excitement the more he learned about his ability. This last ability allowed his ooze to absorb an oncoming attacks, absorb them and lessen any ability cooldowns. Good for a fight that’d require multiple uses of abilities. [break][break] The cage rattling grew louder as it sound as if the cage door was bending and breaking off its hinges. Alastor stood up from his chair facing where the noise originated. "What is that noise? Metal bending? it..couldn't be the animals could it? None of them should be able to break the doors." As Alastor approached where the noise was coming from he felt a knot in his throat and a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. It was coming from Jaco’s cage. But Jaco didn’t usually misbehave even when restless. He was the friendliest monkey one could meet. He saw Jaco’s paws grabbed and pulled and pushed on the metal doors. His door finally gave in. With a howl and a crashing sound the door flew off the cage crashing against a wall. Out stepped the silhouette of Jaco. But something was wrong. His eyes glowed with a reddish orange glow. His gaze shifted to Alastor. His body convulsed and shifted suddenly Jaco’s muscles started growing bigger. His face growing more aggressive looking. When the changes were done Jaco was now a bit taller than Alastor and certainly much buffer. Jaco thrusted both arms up in the air and let out a loud howl that no longer sounded like a monkey. More like a beast. "Jaco? That is you right? It's me remember? Alastor. We're great buddies. We share lunches, play together, take naps, talk about the future, and sometimes prank each other. We're friends." Jaco’s gaze fell back down on Alastor. Snorting a bit his fangs bared. Letting out another howl. Jaco was obviously not himself anymore. He means to harm Alastor. What is Alastor to do? Hurt his friend? He couldn’t. He has to escape somehow.

Alastor was sure Jaco meant him harm. His exit path or the straightest path was blocked by his former friend. Jaco tilted his head back and what looked like a ball of whirling air formed in front of his mouth. This was..an attack? When Jaco swung his head forward to launch his attack Alastor dove behind some metal crates barely dodging the attack. “Woah that was close.” Jaco continued to thrash about as Alastor crouched behind the tall stacked crates. “I’m not as agile as a fighter or adventurer.” The thought dawned on Him. “But I could give myself a bit of a boost.” Alastor pulled up his inventory, clicking the Steady Wins the Race ability. Opting to increase his speed by 5% then verifies. An energy washes over Alastor’s legs he suddenly feels lighter on his feet. Grinning feeling pretty good about his chances. But, not enough he was sure. Looking around Alastor was searching for something to throw, maybe a distraction or a way to blind Jaco. His eyes scanned the immediate area successfully finding a small bag of sand. “Bingo.” Alastor grabbed the small bag by the top and the other hand grabbed a beaker. “1, 2, 3” He quickly tossed the beaker far to the left of Jaco grabbing the monkey’s attention. When Jaco’s head turned Alastor took off from behind the crates tossing the bag towards Jaco. By the time Jaco turned to face Alastor, the bag nailed him in the face spreading sand all around his face in a cloud. Jaco angrily howled rubbing his eyes giving just the opening Alastor needed. Running out from behind the crates Alastor made a dash for the door. Jaco was frantically trying to see where Alastor was moving while partially blinded by the sand. Swinging one arm towards Alastor to no avail as Alastor slide under the arm with ease. Reaching the door exiting the room He headed down the hallway.
[break][break]
He figured he should get out of the building as quick as he could and find authorities. A loud bang came from behind Alastor. Stopping to look e saw a metal table had crashed through the wall across from the doorway he just exited. Not long after leaped Jaco. Not wanting Jaco to catch him he ducked into another room. Jaco started breaking into each room causing a huge ruckus as he trashed the rooms. Alastor heard slow footsteps heading down the hall. He looked around to find a way to slow down Jaco. He still didn’t want to kill him as he believed the fun loving Jaco was still in there. He came across some stacked metal containers. Reading the words he smiled. It was a new glue being developed in this lab. Supposedly as strong as cement and quick drying. “Now to set up the trap.” Alastor grabbed some rope, a mannequin, a cart, and as much as he hated it, a stun baton with adjustable voltage they used for any rowdy animals. Between small animals and animals like gorillas. This was more than likely only going to stun Jaco or knock him out Alastor hoped. Alastor managed to set his trap in time to duck down to wait for Jaco. It didn’t take long as not long after Alastor crouched down Jaco smashed the doors off its hinges. Jaco searched around giving off a few snorts now and then. Stopping to look then moves on. “Gotcha.” Alastor whispered as he pulled the first rope he set up making the mannequin on the cart move. Alerting Jaco, who gave chase to the mannequin till he caught up to it and smashed it. Jaco scratched his head confused. This wasn’t the human he was chasing. Unfortunate for Jaco he also didn’t realize he was standing on the X made of tape. Alastor pulled the second rope causing a big bucket to fall on Jaco’s head causing him to frantically dance around in place trying to get it off. Alastor took that time to move to the nearby container of the glue and turned the knob. Glue poured out of the container spreading out getting under Jaco’s feet as Alastor figured. . Jaco managed to get the bucket off noticing the glue too late. His hind legs were caught in the glue. Jaco pulled and pulled but couldn’t get free. The glue dried and cemented Jaco’s hind legs to the ground. Angered, Jaco started pounding his paws on the cement to break free. It seemed to not work.
[break][break]
Alastor took this time to exit the room looking back quickly uttering. “Sorry buddy. At least I didn’t use the stun baton on you.” Collapsing the baton pacing it in his pocket he exits the room. The door shut with a thud behind Alastor. Making his way down a few flights of stairs hearing Jaco’s air blasts and fists pounding rumbling the building. A few caused part of the wall to crumble and fall breaking the stairs going down. “Great. Another obstacle. At least I have my boost ability till activated. A little extra speed never hurts.” Alastor didn’t want to admit it but for a scientist, who still worked out, was pretty fast already before the boost. With the boost and a few steps back then a run forward he managed to lap over to the other side of the gap. Looking back up at the side he just came from smiling. “Hope I don’t have to do that again for a long time.” Alastor continued on down making it to the first floor. Still hearing and feeling rumbles from Jaco’s thrashing he made his way to the small area by the water fountain outside the building. Was big enough to fit a small crowd with a water fountain in the middle. Alastor hear a loud howl before one after another streams of air similar to Jaco’s air ball shot through the different sides of the building making big holes. Unfortunately for Alastor, one hole was a wall of the room Jaco was in and it faced him. Alastor looked up to see Jaco scowling down at him. Then Jaco leaped out of the hole in the wall slamming his paw into the wall of the building using it to slow his decent. Finally reaching the ground cracking and breaking the pavement under him, Jaco set his sights on Alastor.
[break][break]
Alastor shook a bit. He was in real danger. Jaco was, now a monster hell-bent on killing him. He might have no choice but to kill Jaco, his friend. Jaco gave Alastor little time to think as he charged him quickly. Jaco took a few steps then leapt at Alastor swinging his paw at him. Luckily Alastor was getting the hang of using his speed to his advantage and dodged under it. Unfortunately, he was unable to dodge the other paw and got knocked tumbling across the area before coming to a halt. Knocked hard laying on his back Alastor grabbed his chest in pain. This was probably the most pain he felt in a while. More so then when he would get injured practicing MMA moves. “Yup. That was definitely painful. , I have no choice.” Alastor hated this. He realized he had no choice but to kill Jaco. Knocking him out would only be a temporary solution and he had no clue what could cause this to happen to Jaco. There’d be no way to contain Jaco while he found a solution. He looked over to see Jaco celebrating like a monkey would after victory. But he was no longer an average monkey.
[break][break]
While Jaco was distracted he allocated a 10% to his strength and the last 5% to his speed making it 10% increase to each. Taking a deep breath he stood up slowly alerting Jaco. Alastor motioned for Jaco to bring it on angering the now hot tempered simian. Jaco charged at Alastor tossing his left paw forward for a punch, but Alastor dodged it thrusting a punch to Jaco’s stomach. Jaco reeled back in pain his right paw holding his injured stomach. Jaco realized that Alastor meant business and wouldn’t be so easy to kill as he thought. Jaco leaped back a bit before charging again this time thrusting his left back paw at Alastor for a kick but Alastor dodged again. This time it was followed by a swinging backhand from his left forepaw. Alastor managed to block to but slid back as Jaco pushed his arm more to try and knock Alastor down. Jaco’s tail swung but Alastor dodged to the right only for Jaco’s right fist to connect to his side sending Alastor to the ground feet back. Alastor again stood up. Jaco’s hits did hurt but not so bad he would be downed in a few hits. He did have to be careful. Alastor started running towards Jaco again. Jaco countered by shooting continuous air balls. With his boost Alastor was able to dodge them. Smoke screens created from the collision of the air balls to the ground as they missed. One hitting the fountain destroying part of it. Water pouring out all over the ground.
[break][break]
Before the smoke cleared Alastor leaped out striking Jaco across the face with his right hand. When landing he continued his barrage with a punch to the stomach then another then another and another. Finishing with a spinning kick to Jaco’s chest. Jaco leaped back 15 feet before charging a rather big air ball towards Alastor. Alastor saw this his eyes widening. “No no no no.” He waited for Jaco to launch the air ball before diving hoping to dodge it. The air ball shot towards Alastor dragging around the ground creating a path of damage as it shot towards its target. The air ball finally stopped and exploded causing dust to cloud up and cover a small area. Alastor managed to dodge it. He was getting tired though. He had to end this soon. Scanning the area he saw the broken water fountain a pipe spewing water sticking out. He then looked down at his pocket where the shock baton was. He noticed Jaco had a gash across his chest. Things were coming together. Although Alastor wished he didn’t have to do what he was about to. Alastor made a dash for the fountain. Using his enhanced strength, he picked up a pipe spewing water soaking Jaco. This only angered Jaco. Jaco danced in place angrily. Alastor dashed towards Jaco pulling out the shock baton getting Jaco’s attention. Turning it to medium strength he began to barrage Jaco with the baton. A combo of the baton hitting him and the electric current really taking it out of Jaco. Alastor did his best to dodge Jaco’s attacks managing to dodge some of them but, taking a small amount of damage from his other attacks. Alastor knew he had to and it here or he’d tire out and lose the fight. Swinging the baton slamming it across Jaco’s jaw, then hitting his knee causing Jaco to kneel, then upwards hitting his chin, then Jaco’s right side. Jaco was being hit too quickly to respond with an attack his own. He was becoming dizzied and his consciousness fading. Alastor. Switched the baton to high strength. Jaco, taking this time to try and slam a fist down onto Alastor’s head. Alastor’s speed boost, plus Jaco’s speed slowing due to all the damage taken allowed Alastor to easily dodge the attack sliding to the left. Jaco responded by pulling his right arm back for a fist swinging down. Alastor, at the same time thrusted the baton forward towards Jaco’s chest. It wasn’t even close. Alastor out sped Jaco jamming the baton against Jaco’s chest him. Jaco let out a loud howl of pain that echoed through the area. Electric current passing through his body Jaco couldn’t react except by convulsing in pain before finally dropping backwards slamming to the ground.
[break][break]
Alastor turned off the baton and stepped over to Jaco. Placing fingers to his neck to check for a pulse. There was none. Jaco was no more. Sullenly Alastor’s hand dropped from Jaco’s neck. He remained there crouching besides Jaco’s body looking down at the poor monkey. His memories with Jaco flooded his head of all the good times together. He was more than a monkey in the lab. He was Alastor’s friend. Alastor had to kill his friend because some mysterious phenomenon made him mutate and become a monster. Tears trickled freely down Alastor’s cheeks. He was sad, but also angry. He wanted answers. Why this happened? What was going on in the world while he held up in the lab? He squatted there so long he lost balance. Nearly falling forward. The canister of ooze fell to the ground popping open. The ooze poured out splatting onto Jaco’s body. A window popped up asking if he wanted to activate “Core”. The idea hit Alastor. This would allow the ooze to consume Jaco’s body, stopping anyone from using or experimenting on his body, and giving Alastor a familiar. But Alastor didn’t want to use Jaco’s body as an experiment. Not this. He didn’t know what would remain and he was not looking to use his former friend as an experiment. Alastor noticed a check box to have it so it does it on his command instead of it asking. He clicked the box then clicked no. “I’ll use it on the next one.”
[break][break]
Alastor decided to give Jaco a burial. Using his strength to carry Jaco’s body to a small grouping of trees. Using a nearby shovel used by the gardener that planted nearby bushes. Alastor dug a grave under their favorite tree to sit under when Alastor snuck Jaco out. After burying Jaco and saying his goodbyes reminiscing about the good times they had, Alastor craved Jaco’s name, birth date and death date. Then carved a monkey with angel wings and a halo under that. “Jaco. Enjoy all those bananas and open space up there. Don’t prank em too hard.” With that Alastor stood up and turned to the area he came from in front of the building. Walking back to where he just was Alastor, now took a good look at the changed city around him. His arms hung down at his sides, his eyes widened. “What the hell happened out here?”

Everything has changed. Normally as someone that studies evolution would be ok or even fascinated by what apparently happened around him while he worked in the lab. Alastor’s legs moved almost on their own. Like he was hypnotized or even enchanted. As he trekked the empty streets, he took note of a few things. One, there were no other people. In fact there seemed to be no other living beings. Two, some the new additions to the city. Some buildings remained untouched but others, however were overgrown by plants or others flooded with water or sustained water damage or even fell completely. Most notable were the buildings that had seemed to now stretch seemingly endlessly in the sky. No sign of an end visible to Alastor. Maybe he was a bit curious or excited about this. Mostly he was worried. These were big changes and they were definitely not for the better. Alastor saw a restaurant he’d eat at often when he worked all day in the lab. It currently looked like it was taken over by plants. The windows smashed and vines slithered through the holes. Deciding to keep moving to avoid dwelling on the downfall of a favored restaurant. Walking down the road crumbled office buildings and stores. Some ripped apart some in shambles. Alastor took note of the untouched comic book store and smiled. Well, at least there was that. He was happy to see his favorite boba tea place still stood despite being a relatively small place. Unfortunately he couldn’t say the same for the giant book store he loved to sit and read in. “Damn. With what’s going on I doubt Amazon would still be delivering so maybe no books till I find a new place.” Alastor took a turn at the next intersection and kept moving. Startling something in the road. Alastor pulled out the shock baton and readied it in case of another attack. The buzzing and crackling of the baton startled the creatures in the shadows causing them to scatter. A couple of dogs was all. He sighed relieved it wasn’t another mutated animal. Thinking about animals brought up Jaco. He hated what he had to do but it was probably the only thing he could do. That’s what he told himself.
[break][break]
He felt, lonely, sad, confused. Any way to try and scientifically explain this didn’t work. There was just no explanation for all this. He continued on walking down the streets of New York, or, what it had become. He just wanted to know what is going on, well, more importantly he wanted to see other people. To know he wasn’t alone in this new version of the city. He didn’t even know if this was going on just here in New York or all over the world. He just kept pressing on as he knew he should to keep searching for others or maybe a food store not ruined by the change. Finding a convenience store, he turned off the baton, tucked it away, and decided to make a stop inside see what he could find. Delighted to find the store is untouched though empty of any people. Without another thought he got to work finding some bags and started to stuff them with food and beverages and other supplies he may need. Who knows what he will see or experience in the future now. He grabbed foods he particularly liked. Trying to keep most of it stuffs that doesn’t spoil any time soon. Jerky and green tea he grabbed plenty of. He also grabbed medicines, bandages, first aid kits, and some other miscellaneous items. After grabbing plenty he walked to the register “What’s that? Forget about it? On the house? Oh you’re too kind sir, truly a kind and giving man. Have a great day ok?” He joked pretending there was actually someone at the register. With a laugh he walked to the exit waving a hand goodbye to no one before exiting the store.
[break][break]
“Ok, now that I have my supplies I should be good for a while and not need to search for food for days. Not that I’m not probably surrounded by possible food sources.” Alastor was still in New York City after all. Surely there were plenty food places that survived whatever this whole thing is. “Think I’ll head to Times Square. Maybe others will meet in a nice big spot.” So with that Alastor took his quickest route he could to Times Square. Ducking in side streets along the way in case of danger. Though, no danger was found. Yes he felt a bit silly Ducking and sneaking around like a military personnel or an adventurer, but he was not looking forward to another fight for a while. Finally, with another few blocks behind him he reached it. “Times Square.” He looked up at the giant TV screens. Some broken, some cracked, some completely off, and some unharmed. Even still, this brought joy to Alastor. He always looked up at the screens and watch the bright TVs display ads and other programs. Though he seemed to notice a lock of people. He stepped closer only to stop when a wave of connected hexagons moves in the air in front of him like a barrier or something. A window popped up in front of Alastor reading. “Congratulations on almost completing your tutorial. Now as a last step to complete it you must simply cross the barrier into the real world to exit your tutorial. Pass barrier 0/1” "Well, glad to be done with the tutorial. Gotta say it was something." Alastor was happy to receive news that he was done with his tutorial. Whatever this meant he didn’t care as he hoped this meant he could find others. Though, this might also mean more monsters. He reached into his pocket and readied his shock baton as he slowly inched towards the barrier. It appeared where his body approached. Putting up a hand just an inch from the barrier he saw a patch of hexagons appear. He then quickly opened his coat to check on the canister of ooze. It was safe in one piece. He then closed his jacket looking ahead. “Well, guess this is where my new life begins.” With that Alastor tightened the grip on the baton and stepped through the barrier. He didn’t feel it as he stepped through but he could see the hexagons appear as he stepped through then disappear behind him. When he brought his attention back to Times Square he noticed there were changes. Some buildings were not as damaged as before he crossed the barrier but most the area was the same. Except, he was pleasantly surprised to see other people in the area. Like him they were gifted with powers. “So guess I’m not so alone. From here on out I am not just one who studies evolution. I am an example of evolution. These powers interest me. I think I’ll see how far I can take them.” He didn’t want to admit he was actually a bit excited about all this. Mostly because this wasn’t something he should be excited about. But, he had to admit. Becoming like a superhuman was pretty cool.
