mission: serve that food[attr="class","cordeliaf"] [attr="class","cordeliaf2"]What? Cordelia must have selected the wrong mission - or was the system acting up against her again? Instead of a battleground hosting evil creatures, she finds herself in a quaint restaurant of some sort. Although the walls are slightly worn, the tables slightly chipped, and paint partially faded, the place seems as lively as it could ever be. Conversation floods the mid-sized hall, as service staff run about trying to cater to each client’s needs. She is dazed - even if she can recognize that the place was indeed popular, she could not see what magnetized this many customers. Where are the chandeliers? The gold-lined walls? The bottles of wine from times of old on display? This restaurant does not look half as refined as her own dining quarters from before the system had her awakened.
An apron is thrown towards her, landing first on the side of her head then draping down to hang over her shoulder. It snaps her out of her bedazzled state - who dares throw anything at her like that? Grabbing the apron in one hand, she looks towards the direction of the throw. A rather plump man wearing an apron himself glares back at Cordelia. “You’re here for the job, right? You better get to workin’ then!” He snaps, and turns away without waiting for Cordelia’s response. Her mouth opens to speak, but she closes it right away. His quick action led to her deducing that this was a common event - the restaurant must have used players as a solution to their problem of being understaffed.
Reluctantly she pulls the apron over her head. This was a mission, after all, and it could be a break from the slaughter. Maybe. Fortunately, the system makes her work easy. Multiple red markers appear at different locations in the restaurant. Each one has different degrees of intensity, ranging from a pale red to a heavy crimson. A marker near the kitchen starts blinking, gaining Cordelia’s attention. Navigating towards it through the narrow spaces between tables, she reaches a tray of food on the counter. She looks at it for a second with unwillingness to carry out her task, which loses to her desperation to complete the mission. The dishes on it are things she had never seen before - and she had a lot of experience with food. If she were to be honest, it does not look appetizing at all - a dark-colored gruel with chunks of red meat scattered inside. What seem to be vegetables are all wilted and soggy. Who would order this? Another plate contains a single baked potato with a green, translucent sauce on it. The third dish is a salad with shrimp: the most normal looking one so far.

A new marker is highlighted, which she promptly makes her way to with a bothered look on her face. Upon arriving at the table, she is met with a family of three - a mother, a father and a boy no older than ten. To think that they must have all survived their tutorial came as a reality check to her. Almost slamming the tray down on the table, as if embarrassed to be doing this job, she scornfully says “Take it.” This leaves a bewildered expression on the parents - the child is just happy to have his food arrive. Without even handing the plates out to each person, Cordelia walks towards the next closest marker.
As she reaches the next table, a pen and notebook materialize in her hands. The current page of the notebook already has the table number marked on it. The system sure likes to make everything obvious - except the things that actually mattered to her, like the false memories plaguing her mind. Or why she had this irrational hatred for dragons instilled in her. The middle-aged man at the table is flipping through the menu, struggling to come to a decision. To aid him, Cordelia adds a quick ”What do you want?”. He looks up towards her, pressured by the Heartless Princess’ arrogant stare. ”Um… I’ll take the mountain salmon stir-fry with troll tear sauce, and one pine slime potato please,” he responds with fear. Mountain what with what? Whatever. These people don’t know food anyway. And the pine slime potato must have been the dish on the other table’s tray. What kind of restaurant was this, that had people eating monster parts? She writes whatever she could recall on her notebook, refusing to ask the customer to speak once more. With a swift turn, she walks to the kitchen window signified by a new marker to hand in the note to the cooks inside.
This was an easy job - the system was basically doing it all for her. It beats having to expend all her energy to slay some monster that does not even matter. At least, that is what she thought. She continues to the next table, her notebook automatically inking the table number at the top of the page once again.

[attr="class","cordeliaf"] [attr="class","cordeliaf2"]As she opens her mouth to pressure the customers - this time a pair of what seem to be lovers - to give their order, Cordelia feels a hand on her shoulder. The seated couple look as the interaction unfolds, a slight tinge of fear in their eyes. She turns around, to be met by the man who threw her the apron earlier. Upon closer inspection, his face is rough and lined with a thick beard. He is a head’s height shorter than her, but his presence defies that. “Oi! I heard some complaints about you,” he warns, looking up at her. She thinks to herself - it must have been that man. Or that family of three. No way it was both, right? “If you want your mission completed, you better do your job right, and do it nice!” Before she can respond, he walks away back to the kitchen. He must have been someone important to this place - if he was speaking to her like that, it was very possible that he was the owner of this establishment.
Right. For the sake of the mission, she would have to abandon her ego. She hurriedly springs her body back to face her new clients. “What do you - what would you like?” she asks. Thankfully, it seems they had already decided beforehand. “I’ll have the pine slime potato,” the first one says, followed by the other, “And I’ll have the minor griffin pasta.” Even with how familiar she was with gourmet culture, Cordelia had never heard of these dishes before. It must have been a sign of the times changing - another thing she would have to get used to. And another pine slime potato? That must be the signature dish of this place, considering how every table that she had been involved with so far had ordered it. She smiles, or attempts to, the expression that shows on her face resulting in a grimace of sorts. She takes the order to the kitchen, careful not to bump into anything on the way in the limited space the restaurant had.

[attr="class","cordeliaf"] [attr="class","cordeliaf2"]Another marker from the kitchen starts blinking haphazardly, beckoning Cordelia’s attention. Fortunately, she was already headed there. After handing the note to the staff inside again, she heads to the counter that the marker is pointing to. There are two dishes, without a tray this time. The smaller of the two is just like the dish she had seen earlier - she assumes it is the pine slime potato. The other dish is larger, with giant chunks of what seem to be fish mixed in with some vegetables. Its most eye-catching element, however, was the fluorescent blue gel-like liquid spread all across it. She turns her head back up, trying not to show her disgust. The attempt fails, however, as her eyes narrow and her nose tries to shrink all the way back into her face.
Correcting her expression, she turns back up to see where she is supposed to deliver the food to. To her slight surprise, it is the same table with the man she took the order from beforehand. It seems the dish she was holding was the mountain salmon stir-fry with troll tear sauce. She gently - or as gently as she is capable of - places the dishes in front of the customer, side by side. Forcing a smile again, she leaves to go to the next marker.
This process repeats for a while - and she is starting to get used to it. She gets remarkably faster at bringing plates to tables and writing down orders. Subconsciously, she isn’t even using the markers anymore. Who knew a snob like Cordelia could excel in the service industry? The only problem was her twisted face - it seems like every customer she interacts with is always on the verge of tears. But the old man wasn’t on her case anymore, which meant she must be doing most things right.

As soon as she is about to get to the last few, she feels a hand on her shoulder again, the same sensation she had felt earlier in the day. ”That’ll be all for the day,” the owner tells her as she turns to face him. Only now did she realize how quickly the time passed - embarrassingly for her, she was in her element and wasn’t quite ready to stop just yet. But a job done is a job done. She undoes the apron and takes it off, leaving it across her shoulder.
”Have a seat,” he says, with a soft voice she did not know he was capable of. She complies and takes a seat at one of the freshly cleaned tables. The man leaves her there, walking back to the kitchen. Soon, a couple of others join her as well. They are dressed just as eccentrically as her in her armor - players. After a few minutes pass and all the customers have left the restaurant, the owner walks back out of the kitchen, carrying a tray with small plates in amounts matching the number of seated players.
It is only when the owner sets down the plates of pine slime potato on the table does she realize how fragrant the dish actually smells. She does not even realize that her hand is already picking up the spoon to get a taste of the delicacy. As it enters her mouth, an unexplained feeling of bliss radiates throughout her body. Maybe this was why everyone was trying to get a taste. Once in a while, this might not be such a bad thing after all.
