Sitting on a folding chair dressed in a dark suit, and her arc-specific tea shade sunglasses, Umeko watched in silence as bros of the dude verity tormented their share of innocent beachgoers. She examined their strategies, how they played, as challenger upon challenger fell to them. Their failures were Umeko’s lessons, she continued to see different players making the same plays and falling into the same pool of anguish. Her sympathies made way for revenge. She refused to allow this to continue, but she understood her own limitations. [break][break] Evidently, her presence aroused suspicions. She remained hypervigilant, her scheme did not pose any risk if discovered, but she wished to avoid the awkward conversation that came with amateur sport espionage. Every glance sent her way, she keenly cracked open her book of shogi puzzles, where she had been secretly writing notes in the margins. All relevant information had been logged: Height, weight, dominate hand, offensiveness, defensiveness, temperament. How she intended to put all of this into practice was a mystery. This would be her first time playing the sport, and a portion of her time had been devoted to learning the many nuanced rules of the game. [break][break] Between games, their great 'ruckus’ would resume. Umeko fought tooth and nail to keep calm under the mounting pressure. Terror made its way towards her as one of the beach’s spectral torments sauntered merrily. Unable to react quickly enough, she was caught mid surrender. Armed with a cartoonishly large water gun, he unleashed a torrent towards the unsuspecting cinematographer. In her distress, all she could hear was the bellowing raucous laughter of her assailant. Walking off, he continued to wreak havoc. [break][break] Soaking wet, she turned a hidden glare towards the remaining possessed. She had spared her notes of most of the damage, but she remained soaked. In a state of despondent defeat, she lowered her arms, before attempting to knock trapped water out of her ear. Sighing a deep and long sigh, she stood, in search of her companion.

The cacophonous *thwap, thwap* echoed across the concrete and sand alike, joining the din of screams, yells, birds, and of course the waves. Dahlia had made it to The Beach. She tried to walk as quietly as possible but found her anxiety amplified by the constant noise of her sandals. She'd managed to dress 'beach-y', with blue swim trunks and a black cami top accented by a very large blue floral overshirt with sleeves tucked up to the elbow. The sun had been a consideration, so along with sunscreen Dahlia had finished her outfit with a large pair of yellow-rimmed plastic sunglasses and a large green plastic visor, both bought at a nearby booth. The didn't match great.

A lot of people enjoy the beach. Plenty others dislike it, and some folks just don't care. Dahlia of course fell into none of these groups and was terrified of the beach. This was par for the dewy-eyed woman making her way down the concrete boardwalk. Fifteen feet away was that dreaded sand, one of many hurdles here at the beach. First had been braving the public world, being scrutinized or even observed by others. Even with the diminished population The Beach managed to be busy.

Plus there were all the aliens and entities. The Beach was swarming with the paranormal, for reasons Dahlia didn't entirely understand. No, for now she was focused on staying alive and finding Ume. Things would be better with a friendly face, surely. It wasn't long before Dahlia noticed someone familiar, but not her friend. "Gilda?" The other woman was some distance away and hadn't seemed to notice Dahlia yet, and she disappeared into the chaos of The Beach before the two could make contact. Maybe for the best- they were barely acquaintances.

Ume finally came into view, not dissolving Dahlia's general scared self but alleviating it a bit. Umeko was someone dependable, and cool, and drenched by a massive water rifle. Dahlia briefly imagined being sprayed by acid and physically shook her head to dismiss the fear, approaching her friend with her best estimation of resolve. Dahlia was of course still shaking with nervous energy, even as she gave a little wave.

"Hi Umeko. I'm sorry they're bothering you." Her voice was barely above quiet conversational and she avoided looking at any of the possessed perpetrators. "What should we do now?" In the distance a U.A.P. dis-apparated and a battle waged just down the beach. Somewhere in the noise was the sound of something familiar, but not quite discernable. It put Dahlia further on edge.

Terribly cold, she dared not warm with the rising of her blood temperature nor the warm sympathies of her tried and true friends. Glad to see Dahlia, Ume replied with a frigid utterance of, “They will apologize in time; I'll make sure of it.” Digging her hands into her pockets with an audible squelch, she rolled her head back, her vision still obscured by the spattering of droplets on her sunglasses. She seemed content to meander in this state; a reminder to herself of exactly why this battle without honor or humanity loomed over the horizon.

Her mind was far far away from actual violence, no matter what her posture and or fashion sense may have implied. Listfully, she turned her head towards the pat-pat-pat of the court. A more friendly, bubbly game of volleyball between several regular women and a large guardian lion statue, partially composed of cybernetic augmentations: Mecha Queen Shisha. Hyper Focused, her eyes darted from ball to shuffle to dive to save. Taking it all in, she laid out the most known of the facts between the two, “We’re goin' ta meet'em on the court as planned. A standard 5v5.” Ume, pausing, considered the walls the game would be inherently abnormal, “Mostly standard.”

The meat of the matter, which she assumed Dahlia was after, was more the ‘how’. Tall, suited, and overtly conspicuous Ume had been at the espionage game for some time; just what did she have to show for it? Pulling a zip-loced book of puzzles from her pocket, she, as the viper laying in wait, was ready to snap at the slightest bit of provocation. Splitting the pages with the aid of a dry pen, she exposed the margin scribblings, ”I’ve studied their strategy.” she so plainly stated, baring a facet of her soul brazenly.

At the forefront, it was mostly raw data. Pure metric numbers pinned between Ume’s neat handwriting offering are only ostensibly encrypted phrases that would have no meaning unless painfully decrypted by the likes of the Stasi. Wishing to avoid the questions her entirely impenetrable data would present, she simply followed up with an incredibly succinct explanation, “They heavily rely on shock tactics; together they dominate early, their opponents try to keep pace and end up so tired and embarrassed that they never recover.”

Such was the plot, “I suggest we let them have the early game, and hold off on our tricks until they’re on the downturn.” Ume advised, opening up the dialogue towards her using her magical suite to cheat at a game of amateur volleyball. Her attention was diligent, but otherwise, still limited by the fact that she for all her points in will, was very much still human. In her humanity, she noticed a certain spark in Dahlia’s eyes, that one that usually came with unexpected paranormal concerns, “Now… is something else on yer mind?”
