Elara had read the two books she'd found about gardening, 101 Plant Tricks and Advanced Guide to Agricultural Sciences: Wheat Anomalies. One of them had been kind of useless and well above Eel's head, but she'd read it all the same; the apocalypse turned out to be sort of boring. Elara found herself wandering around L.A. again, spending a bit of time getting some new clothes and cataloguing her inventory before seeing that blue window that was quickly becoming familiar. "Oh, it's Arkin again..." She tapped the accept button and made her way to the old man's house, sipping from her canteen.

The curtains were drawn but the screen was open, so the plastic blinders clattered together a bit in the breeze. Elara spied the figure sitting in his chair downstairs still, and before she could even make it to the door she heard his gruff voice, barely above a regular speaking volume- "Come on in miss." She opened the already unlocked door and entered, and was entirely unable to hide her surprised face, open mouth and all. Arkin's missing arm had indeed 'grown back'. "Yep, came in last week." His complete lack of emotion at the statement was more strange, somehow. "But m'backs still shot, so waterin', bit of prunin'." Nothing seemed to phase this man.

"Sure thing. I learned a bit on my own, too." He just nodded and sipped at a drink, the quiet drone of a radio at low volume playing nearby, but he didn't seem to be listening to it all too intently; Arkin stared out the window like usual. Elara got to work. She decided to do the upstairs first this time, since some of the plants would need to be hauled down to the kitchen sink for soaking, but before that she produced her own acquired tools and arranged them on an end table by the door. She had her own little watering can, black with daisies painted on, and two pairs of pruning shears, one skinny and one a bit more thick. Next to it all went a boxcutter and a pair of gloves before starting up the stairs. Eel wasn't even sure what she would need from her little collection, but she was proud of it regardless and kind of wanted to show it off to someone.

"The celosia shed ev'rywhere." Elara had no idea what 'celosia' was, but the puzzled look on her face prompted Arkin to point, and sure enough there were a few plants of the same kind in multiple colors. One in particular was larger than the rest, green foliage with a deep red with pinkish overtone plumage to it, and a couple of stalks had withered a little. "Trim the dead 'uns too." Eel went to her arrangement of tools and grabbed a little hand broom by the screen door and set to work. She was careful to pick the fallen flowering from the dirt around it, opting to sweep the rest into a little hand-pan, then clipped at the empty stalks, nearest to the base as she could.

It was nice to be busy, here. This place was peaceful in it's way, a nice ocean breeze wafting in and occasionally stirring the room, the radio near Arkin playing some sort of music. The radio was clearly playing a recording of some kind, meaning Arkin had his own curated music collection (or perhaps owned only one, which is why he never changed the music the entire time Elara was here.) She was reminded of home, naturally. Sitting on the couch with the dog curled up on and over her lap, Tanq being entirely too large to be a 'lap dog' but still embodying the spirit of one. Wendy would be nearby strumming on something and humming melody, occasionally stopping to write as she practiced. Sometimes Wendy would be in her office, and Elara would bring her notebook there and sit in the doorway, just to listen to her play while Eel wrote. It would have been nice to hear Wendy play while Eels worked a garden for them. She felt a bit of wet at her cheeks where tears had streaked.

"Mmm, thinkin' agin." Elara sniffled a little and straightened a little to shuffle the plant remains to a composting can outside, passing briefly inside. She looked to Arkin and wiped at her face sheepishly.

"There's a lot to think about." Arkin nodded, but didn't comment further for a bit, and Eel decided to finish what she was doing. Outside the door though she heard "Always is."

Elara finished the rest of the patio, checking the lemon sapling for any new wayward branches, but it seemed to be sorted. All of the plants looked a bit better than last time, or at least that's what Elara assumed it meant when some of them had been yellowed before, and were green and full now. It had been rewarding work before to care for the plants, but coming back to the same and finding improvements was... well it was a different kind of success. It didn't fill that pit in Elara's chest that had been there for months now, well before Earth-chan's rapture, but it was a nice change from constant ennui. Elara kept working through some more tears.

Elara found a plant that seemed far too big for it's pot. She hefted it and brought it within Arkin's view, and like the perceptive old fellow he was, he immediately groaned a little as if in thought. A thoughtful groan.

"Mmm, yep. New ones're out in the patio closet." It was like he was some kind of mind reader, but it made being around him very easy. Elara went outside again and found the door in question, set against a small wall that probably housed the water heater on the other side, all attached to the town home. Inside were some tools and old flattened boxes, spare soil, and... there, tucked behind a folding chair were some clay pots. The woman idly wondered how he'd gotten all this stuff, or if Arkin had already lived here before the Light. Eel found a suitable receptacle and extricated it along with a bag of soil before setting it on the floor just outside the doorway, still on the patio. The plant was set next to it, and Eel made one more trip to grab her boxcutter, just in case the thing was 'rootbound'. She wasn't totally sure what that was supposed to look like, but the book had made it sound like a simple enough fix.

"So, first I...hm." Elara looked to Arkin for advice, but he offered none. "Y'got it." He ate a few spoonful's of some kind of soup. Elara would just have to wing it. She padded the new larger pot with a bit of soil and tried to spread it around the edges before realizing she didn't know how much she would need, and so removed the plant from the pot. The roots were indeed kind of jumbled up, there being almost more of that messy eggshell color than actual dirt. "S'bound." He seemed to be watching her work, but with that usual look of apathy.

"Ah, fuck it." Arkin had this aura of letting people learn, so Eel would learn. She grabbed her boxcutter and, like in the amateur guide, cut a light line along the bottom of the dirt in four directions, making a little plus sign and loosening the base of the plant. She opted to take some going upwards as well, and loosened the base with her hands before placing it all into the pot with the new soil. She'd needed a bit more, and so piled it up around the sides and formed a base, doing her best to blend the new soil with the old. A bit of water to soften it, making sure it was a little higher than she thought it needed to be but also accounting for the likely rise of the plant base...

"S'fine." Elara couldn't tell if she'd done a good job, but she wasn't entirely sure Arkin cared. "Will see how she goes." She replaced the newly potted plant where it had been before and started sweeping up the loose dirt before putting all the things back in their place.

"Good work. Come by agin." Elara hadn't finished watering all the downstairs plants, knowing of at least two she'd missed. Was he going to do it? But what about his back? Maybe it was just an excuse, and he liked to have the company now and again?

"Sure thing." She smiled and showed herself out. Didn't much matter why to Eel; spending time here was peaceful in a time where it felt like there was none to be had.
