When Andy walked into the establishment of his quest giver he had much different expectations of how the day would go than what he was presented with. In truth, he had mostly been interested in the chance to form a relationship with another crafting or production class. It was an opportunity he didn't want to pass up. [break][break] However, what Andy was presented with upon asking for more information from his patron was much more mundane than what he imagined. He misread the post and he thought he'd be going off into the jungles somewhere to gather raw coffee. Instead what he was sent to do was scour through the convenience stores and supermarkets of New York to find a package of instant coffee... [break][break] He had half a mind to refuse the request due to the absurdity of the situation. That is until the quest giver mentioned that a strange small girl used to collect it for them and she was harmed recently. It sounded too much like Dee Dee for Andy to ignore it. What other small girl would go around to strange places to collect things for people? He'd have to come back later and teach them a lesson for making a child do dangerous things for them. After he'd been paid of course. [break][break] Once he was done getting all the information he needed from them Andy made his way to the teleporter. He checked his gear to make sure he brought everything he wanted to try out. He originally planned for this mission to be a test run for Ender Island since he thought he'd be traversing the jungle. Now that he knew he was just going to New York he felt somewhat overdressed. A pair of slip-on shoes, a black jacket he recently bought that he felt flattered him, egg bombs strapped to his chest like grenades, the lava daggers he acquired from a red-headed man, and last but not least his Jumbo Gumbo stashed away in his inventory for emergencies. It was better to be overprepared than underprepared anyways. [break][break] Andy entered the teleporter and hiked his way to New York to the rendezvous location his benefactor set up. He was supposed to meet someone else to help him scavenge the area. How dangerous could it be that they needed multiple people to find coffee? Were there monsters roaming the area or maybe it was gangs? He'd never been to America before the end, but he'd heard about how dangerous America could be. This world was a game changer.

When Hikari first woke up, she had been dreading that it had all been a dream. This new world, these new faces, they were all a sign of change. And it was with change with which she thrived. Hikari was always someone who could turn a disaster into a victory, and she would make sure that this opportunity given to her in a silver platter turned out to be the best for herself and her own. She would not be under anyone's thumb anymore, the master of her own destiny.

And this is why she was here now, on a "mission" to get more coffee. The task seems simple enough, and yet there were dangers abroad. The fact that the person was not willing to let their previous supplier do this task any more spoke volumes of the dangers presented. And yet, Hikari thrived in danger. Though, controlled as it was. She would not under take this alone, after all.

New York looked vastly different from what she knew of it. Everything was in shambles. There was beauty in it, still. The beauty of destruction, the grace of the fallen. She turned towards an approaching figure and raised her eyebrow. This person was to be her partner for this? A quick judgement of the man's pace, gait, an demeanour, and Hikari was satisfied. They've seen combat at the very least.

"Are you to be my partner for this mission, then?" Hikari spoke softly, the demure heiress always worked. "We'll be in your care." She bowed slightly, before turning towards their task. Now, where should they begin?

After giving the woman a quick once over Andy was somewhat confused in his assessment. With a calm look on her face, it seemed like she didn't have any concern about the danger they could potentially face. Well, except for the eyebrow raise she gave him as he approached. Though it could be argued she looked much odder than he did. She wasn't dressed for the battlefield in any regard yet she had multiple weapons sheathed on her body and held fans in her hands. She was a combat class for sure, or at the very least have acquired several weapons like he had, so she shouldn't be a hindrance at least. [break][break] When she spoke he got even more confused. She didn't introduce herself yet she seemed rather polite otherwise and even bowed to him. When referring to herself she said 'we' as well. A royal we? How odd. “Yes that's right. We'll be working together for a bit here. You can call me Andy. Sounds like we're going to be scavenging the area for some instant coffee.” He tried to hide the annoyance in his voice but didn't do so well. “Best be on our guard. The last person they sent out here got attacked.”[break][break] She seemed eager to get to work as she turned towards the street. “Guess we should start looking around and see if we find any convenience or grocery stores?” Andy made his way down the middle of the street while making sure to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. With most people no longer having a vehicle license it was pretty safe to walk in the road so why not? He'd be further away from the alleyways and other places people could hide to ambush him. “So what brings you here to a mission like this anyways?” |

There a moment where Hikari thought herself to be back in the other world. A moment when she doubted that what she was seeing was reality. But at the touch of her floating swords on her bare skin, she was jolted back into reality. This reality. And she felt relief wash through her.

"You can call me Hikari-" She paused, stopping herself from adding sama at the end of her name. She was still getting used to the fact that she had to introduce herself to people in this world. Even more so with people actually using her first name. It was better this way, she supposed. Better than having those who knew her in her past life actually knowing that she was alive and well. Let Hikari Uesugi lie dead, buried in the ashes of the past.

Yes, this was certainly a dangerous mission. Just like what the man, Andy, had said, the last person who did this was roughed up. But Hikari doubted that they were the type of person to have been good at fighting. From what she had gathered, the previous person doing this job was someone who was lithe and quick, not someone battle-worthy. At least not in the sense that this world took the term.

"Don't worry about me." Her even temper made her responses cool and without emotion. Turning left and right as they moved, she spied a few places where coffee could have been sold, but none that were good prospects. Most of this place had either been looted, or destroyed beyond recognition. Nature has slowly been taking back the world, one street corner at a time. [break][break]
Hikari let one of her hands stroke one of her swords, before responding. "This is how we live life now, isn't it? Danger in exchange for rewards, and the more danger, the bigger the rewards." She said it so nonchalantly. "There." Without warning, she raised her hand and pointed towards what looked to be a corner store hidden between two dilapidated buildings. "That store is hidden enough that there might still be some stuff left." She let her words hang, waiting for Andy to lead the way. Ladies first only worked in situations unlike these.

Seeing Hikari have to jolt herself back to life after dazing away for a moment didn't give Andy much confidence in her combat ability. At least she was somewhat intimidating with all those swords floating around. Maybe she'd be able to scare off some of the gangsters roaming around. You'd have to be either pretty stupid or pretty desperate to try to fight someone wielding giant floating swords. [break][break] Despite Hikari trying to reassure him he was still concerned about her. She seemed calm and collected for the moment, but her stroking her sword caused a certain unease in Andy. “I suppose so. Who would have guessed that our everyday life would change so abruptly? For some people, this could be seen as an improvement.” At least that was the case for him. He'd grown rather anxious in the old world with the end of his list quickly approaching. With all the new creatures appearing he had much more room to breathe going forward. [break][break] It didn't take long for Hikari to point out a small shop tucked away behind some crumbling buildings. She had good eyes at least. It didn't look like the safest place to check out, but they didn't have many better options. Then again it was somewhat out of the way so it may be safe. Well, there's only one way to find out. He picked up the pace as he began towards the building. “Good job. I'll take point and try to scope out the place first. Stay back for a moment.” It was better if he did it he thought. He was likely faster and had some armor to protect himself in case something happened. [break][break] Andy clicked his heels together like he was the lead in The Wizard Of Oz and dashed towards the entrance. Once he got closer he slowed down the pace to make sure he didn't step anywhere he shouldn't. Who knew what was lying around these streets before things went to hell and things could be even worse now? He walked through the door and a bell went off to alert the workers that a customer arrived. Or that would be its purpose if any of them remained. He briefly glanced around the front of the small store to see if he could spot anyone. After confirming there was nobody he could see from the entrance he returned to Hikari. “Looks clear. Let's see if we can find something useful.” |

Hikari nodded at his response. The man was polite enough, and he seemed to have an understanding of the situation well enough. It was true, for a lot of people, this change in the situation of life can be seen as an improvement. A new life. A new opportunity. A life of freedom, and one day, prosperity. For others, it might seem like a curse, a trade-off of something good, to something bad, These people might have had a great life in the old world.

"All we can do is to do our best in this new world of ours. After all, surviving is first priority." She commented nonchalantly, before looking towards the store which she had pointed out. With the agreement of the man, and his unusual way of using what she assumed to be a footwear item, Hikari followed suit. It would do well to stick close to the person that seemed to know what he was doing. Learning from the more experienced people usually works out well.

It was only when he had signalled the all clear that Hikari truly followed into the store. She was unsure what kinds of things could be lurking behind the empty shelves and counters. She was not going to risk herself in that way. Instead, she made sure follow int he man's footsteps. It was easy enough, after all.

When she got into the store, the first thing she realized was how dark it was. Hikari felt herself shiver slightly, though she did not show it visibly. Instead, she worked towards going through the aisles one at a time. The store seemed to be stocked, but not as fully as she had hoped. Perhaps this place had been looted, but the previous looters did not bother to tell anybody else about this treasure trove.

There was nothing in her chosen aisle, unfortunately, and she was about to turn to the next aisle when she heard a sound just around the corner, towards the back of the store. She froze and ducked. With a keen eye, she would watch at what thing might pop out this time. Was it a monster perhaps? Or maybe just a small critter? She hoped Andy heard the same and was heading to investigate.

Andy lead the way through a safe path towards the entrance of the building and the bell rang again. Once inside he took one of his daggers from his side to provide a source of light to search with. He chose the aisle next to Hikari's to search as he didn't want to stray too far. If something appeared and they were split up it could be disastrous. Likewise, he didn't find what they were looking for, but there was still more of the store to search. [break][break] As he was heading towards the next aisle the sound of something falling on the ground caused him to jump. Andy stashed his dagger away before crouching close to the ground and ducking behind the nearest shelf. He hadn't seen anything from the front of the store, but there were plenty of blind spots because of the aisles. He checked around the corner to make sure nothing was there before skulking his way toward the source of the noise. Hopefully, Hikari continued to listen to his earlier advice and allowed him to survey the area. [break][break] Upon getting closer to the source he could hear somebody whispering angrily at another person. Before long they were arguing back and more voices joined in. Andy quickly peaked to get a look at the group and grit his teeth as he noticed they were armed. He made his way back to Hikari without getting spotted as the group was busy assigning blame for blowing the ambush. [break][break] Andy whispered to try to hide their location from the others. He didn't know if they knew where they were, but he wanted to try his best to make sure they didn't. “Bad news. There's another group here and they don't sound friendly. They were trying to ambush us, but someone ruined that plan. Do you want to head somewhere else or take our chances here?” |

There was a point in time when Hikari would not have wanted to be a part of this debacle. In fact, she would have wanted to run away, never to look back, and to have the proper authorities handle the situation. But this wasn't the good old days, nor was she the same Hikari Uesugi. No, she was someone new, someone who was once caged, now freed. She would do it her way.

"Let's turn the tables against them." Hikari paused a moment, before smiling. "Get ready to ambush them. Watch for the signal." There was a grin forming on her lips, though she made sure to squash it down. Of course, by herself, she would not be truly ready for this mission. But with Andy? Well, they should be fine, right? The man seems capable enough. And to be honest, she wanted to get into some action. It was past time her swords got blood.

In a flash, she changed her demeanour. One from a determined and bloodthirsty woman to a demure and lost-looking one. She held herself in weakness and pulled herself forward. She made sure to have the light behind her, blinding those looking at her directly. The storefront's door was glass, and therefore let the light stream through without consequence.

"E-excuse me..." She paused for dramatic effect. "E-excuse me, but I'm looking for something to eat. I-I-I really haven't eaten much since coming to this place. I just r-randomly appeared out of nowhere. P-please..." As she said the last word, two men came up from behind the corner. It seems that they too were scavengers. They were here for supplies, and possibly saw her and Andy as easy targets. They would soon regret that.

Their wide eyes, and confused looks were good enough for Hikari. They didn't know what was up, that was good. Now for the fun part. As they approached and started asking questions, their weapons glinting in the light, Hikair struck. It was at the moment where they walked past Andy's position. There was a reason for her positioning, after all. Behind her, hidden, were her swords. Shotsuren was already unsheathed when it sprung from behind its mistress and craved straight through the first ambusher's shoulder with a flick of Hikari's fan. She grinned, waiting for Andy to make his move.

Andy was surprised at the woman's change in demeanor. He hadn't expected Hikari to start smiling while talking about attacking others. It seems like he underestimated her. He nodded after she explained her plan and followed her at a distance until he got to a good spot to hide. [break][break] Once again she proved to be much more than Andy first expected as she quickly swapped personas to a damsel in distress. At this point, he could tell she was anything but some strangers may be fooled. Keeping the light to her back was a smart move and showed she had some experience with this sort of thing. Well, maybe not this exactly, but hunting or something similar perhaps. She was even hiding her swords so she didn't raise suspicion. However, something was off. He could have sworn he heard more than just two of them. [break][break] While Hikari put out the bait Andy took a container of gumbo from his inventory and popped the lid as quietly as he could. Luckily the scavengers were too distracted by her pleas to notice the muffled pop. As he took a few gulps of the system-made food he could feel his skin get slightly thicker. It wasn't the result he hoped for, but he'd make do. This also seemed like the perfect chance to try his new ability. He could feel the warmth from his meal spread throughout his body. It was invigorating. [break][break] It was only a few seconds before the scavengers passed by Andy and Hikari gave the signal to attack. It wasn't a very subtle signal as a sword slashed through one of them. It was as good a sign as any. He grabbed one of the Jagged Red Hot Daggers in his left hand and his right summoned a large skinning knife that he'd become quite adept at using. It was time to turn the tables on their would-be assailants. [break][break] With a flash of red from his eyes and his blade, Andy leaped forward towards the shocked pair. In an instant, he was on them with his skinning knife buried deep in the glowing red target on the side of the uninjured ambusher and the Dagger in the center of their chest. After pulling them out he gave a swift kick to the wound in their side to send them tumbling to the ground. They likely weren't getting up any time soon. |

She had measured her partner in this mission well. Her assumption that he was more seasoned than he looked proved to be true as he immediately reacted to her attack. The way Andy had dealt with the other man was swift and efficient. In fact, she admired his viciousness and the way he effectively disabled their would-be assailant in one swift act.

"Oh, what do we do now." Hikari smiled as she took her fan, and slashed it forward. Her Shotsuren followed suit, creating a small gust as it flew straight towards the Achilles heel of the one he had incapacitated, eliciting a howl of pain as it gouged deep. She loathed people who took advantage of the innocent, even more on those who preyed on their fellow men. She would suffer none of them, especially not in this world where law and order are dubious already.

Her eyes burned with passion, almost hatred, but with a hint of joy. "What to do with you, indeed. Tell me, do you have any companions? Shall they, come out?" She spoke in such an eerie tone that she herself was surprised. This was truly a change in her, one she kind of enjoyed and reveled in. "Or shall they...run away."

With a grin, she looked around. Her Shotsuren was now hovering beside her. However, what would cause someone to truly fear her visage was the fact that her second sword was now unsheathing itself. This second sword was longer, and more menacing than her first sword.

"If I were you, I would run away as far as possible. Throw everything that you scavenged from this store, and maybe even those you scavenged in other stores. We'll forget this happened, and you'll be good boys and girls in the foreseeable future, hm?" She called out loud, and added, "Or my friend's knives here, as well as my swords, will do more than just maim." Shotsuren, her first sword, gleamed in anticipation, still dripping in blood. Now it was their move.

Andy didn't have to do much more as Hikari swiftly and viciously made sure the man he attacked wouldn't be walking out of there on his own two feet. He'd already incapacitated the man so he wasn't sure why she'd continue attacking them except to intimidate the other. If that was her intention she exceeded expectations. [break][break] The person with the sword wound in their shoulder quickly scrambled to their feet. They dropped everything they'd gathered to pick up their friend from the ground and hobble their way out the door. All they could muster for words were shaky apologies and promises to not do it again as Hikari's second sword unsheathed itself. Andy would have to make sure not to ever get on her bad side. [break][break] Shouting could be heard from the front of the store as the familiar sound of a bell rang through the building. Andy turned towards Hikari as he sheathed his Dagger and the knife he summoned disappeared from existence. “Well that was easier than expected. You did a good job.” He wasn't sure if complimenting her was exactly the right thing to do as she seemed to be enjoying the process of slashing up their enemies. There were other things to worry about though. [break][break] “Let's find that coffee so we can get home.” Thankfully without the scavengers to worry about the search went relatively smoothly. It took some time to find the correct aisle, but eventually, a suitable bag was found. Unopened and dry. “Time to get paid. You seem pretty good at all this. Let me know if you want to team up again. I don't often turn down a payday.” |

A part of Hikari relished in what just transpired. Her anger at those who would take advantage of others was sated for now, and watching them run away, hobbling and crying, made it all the better. This world was lacking in morals, especially with the consequences of crime being few and far between. She would do her part, not only because she felt the need to, but also because she wanted this world to be a safer place for all. Or perhaps she had become deranged? Who knows?

"It was a team effort, Andy." She smiled, and bowed slightly before letting her swords float down and away. She would not let them sheathe without first completing their mission. Her naivete had been robbed when she first stepped into this new world. This was a man eat man world, and she would be the one who eats. At least, that was the plan.

She peered around, before slowly making her way around the shelves. The things left by those who fled were quickly stowed away, hopefully, they were of value. In the end, their mission was their foremost concern. She had little time to idle. The faster they could get this done, the better.

When Andy exclaimed that he had found it, Hikari made her way toward the man. She smiled slightly at their prize, before making their way back. She would finally introduce herself to the knife-wielding man. "You may call me Hikari, Andy. It was a pleasure working with you. Perhaps we may meet one day soon." Once more she gave a bow, before they went towards their client.
