It was time to finally fulfill his promise to Kael. After the tutorial, the two of them planned out a day to go camping so they could have the meal they'd talked about during the tutorial. Maybe it started as a joke or a way to make themselves feel better in the tense situation, but Andy took it seriously. After all, this was what he did even before the new world. The idea of all these new kinds of creatures to cook excited him. [break][break] The Demonic Chicken from the tutorial had been broken down in the field and then stored properly when they found a nearby house in the countryside. Andy was confident everything was done right and had been looking forward to this for quite a while. He'd been testing his recipe on normal chicken to make sure he got it right. He couldn't risk wasting what little meat he had on experiments after all. All he needed was a small piece to test if it tasted like chicken, which it did. [break][break] Andy packed up everything he needed for the trip and headed for Hollow Hills. He waited at the spot that he and Kael talked about before so they could walk to the site together. Getting lost in the woods on your own would suck, especially with monsters walking around. They'd likely have to keep their guard up while they were out there, just in case. While he waited he flipped through his notebook he brought with him with notes on his previous tests. |

Kael cracked his knuckles as he set himself up to begin his small trek. It had been a few days since he's seen or heard from Andy. Well, at least it's felt like it's been that long. Time moves quite weirdly in this new world of theirs. Kael himself felt like the world was now, more than ever, estranged from the reality that they all knew. What kind of power could have caused this? how does this affect life as they know it moving forward?[break][break]
Shaking his head, he tried to focus on his current agenda: to get to the place and see Andy! He was ready for this get-together, and possibly share what they've learned so far about this world. The place where they chose to meet wasn't too dangerous, at least. Though it was more infested with monsters compared to Safe Zones, he had been told that this specific part of the Hollow Hills were, at the very least, been cleared of monsters. In fact, it was a popular place for people to go if they ever needed a get-away.[break][break]
Cresting over a small hill, Kael found himself waving at the man in question. "Andy!" He shouted, before making his way towards the man. He had made sure he had everything they might need for this trip and had to double-check once more as he neared Andy. "It's good to see you! How's everything been going so far? I'm glad to see you're relatively unharmed." He held out a hand to shake, before looking to get settled.

Once Andy heard his name being called out he immediately took his attention away from his notebook. He waved back at Kael and stashed his notebook in his pack before shaking their hand. “It's good to see you too Kael! Things have gone relatively well on my end. I did a few missions and leveled up a bit. I'm level 6 now after everything. I haven't gotten any new abilities or anything yet, but my stats are looking pretty good I think.”[break][break] “I ran a stall at a large festival and helped protect traders returning home after. I met some interesting people. A really strong woman named Argent helped protect the traders. A kid named Dee Dee runs a blog teaching people about the system. You met Jeanne-Marie. It'll be nice to relax a bit after a long few weeks.” After going on and on about what he'd been up to Andy finally stopped to ask Kael. “So what have you been doing lately?”[break][break] Andy watched as Kael checked his belongings and couldn't help but sigh. “Kael isn't that something you should do BEFORE you get out here? What good is checking going to do now if it was left at home?” He grumbled, but let out a chuckle afterward. “Think you're all set to head out to camp?” He picked up his cooler and pack to begin the trek to their camp site. |

Kael chuckled at listened attentively. Andy's own adventures seem to be as eventful as his, which was not surprising at all. In fact, this whole world was filled with adventures, and all of them were as dangerous as they sounded. It was Kael's first lesson, and one which he would not take for granted. [break][break]
"Ah, yes! I'm just double checking to make sure. I'm somewhat of a worrywart when it comes to these things." Kael apologized, after making sure he had everything in order. "You can't be too careful when it comes to these kinds of place, if we're being honest. Outside of town, no matter how close, can become a very dangerous place in a blink of an eye." Kael shuffled about, eyes searching the surroundings for one quick sweep before smiling back.[break][break]
"Let's get this started then!" Kael followed Andy, as he then started regaling the man with his own adventures. "I've done a bit on the side as well! Can you believe that slimes actually exist in this world? Slimes! Now thinking about it, do you think you can cook slimes?" Kael asked seriously, before bursting out laughing, "But of course, slimes might be better as a drink to be fair. A weird drink...but a drink nonetheless." [break][break]
This was a break from the dangerous world they were dropped into, and Kael thoroughly appreciated it.

In truth, Andy was a worrywart as well, but usually, that was reserved for before the event. Once he got into the thick of it the worries and fears were burned away by the fire of the stove. Or in this case, blown away by the breeze flowing through the forest. “I understand wanting to be prepared Kael. Better to be safe than sorry. I don't imagine we'll encounter anything too dangerous out here. I'm confident that we'll be able to handle whatever we run into. We took down that chicken after all and we've only gotten stronger since then!”[break][break] Kael scanning the area didn't escape Andy's notice. He was glad the man was on alert, but this was supposed to be a time for them to relax. He'd been to the Hollow Hills before and taken the chance to scout out the area. He did it to find a good spot, but also to make sure it was relatively safe for the two of them. “Kael you can drop your guard for a bit. We'll be able to hear whatever is coming out here. You can relax for a bit and enjoy yourself.”[break][break] The hike through the forest to their desired spot was not an easy one, but one that Andy felt was well worth it. Throughout the long trek through elevated terrain, he made sure to check with Kael to make sure he was doing OK. Dehydration was serious and he didn't want them getting hurt by tripping over something or some other silly thing that could be prevented. [break][break] When the subjects of slimes came up Andy began to think of the possible applications and became lost in thought for a moment. He nearly jumped out of his skin at Kael's unexpectedly loud laughter. He'd forgotten just how boisterous they could be. “You could maybe make jelly with them. If they're gelatinous at all you may be able to use it in place of collagen and other things to thicken soups, make desserts, and many other applications. A drink could be interesting as well, but probably not in a good way.” He chuckled slightly at the idea of a slimy drink and then grimaced as he thought about it more. [break][break] It was time to change the subject. Andy wasn't sure if Kael would be up for such a thing, but it wouldn't hurt to ask. “I've been meaning to go on a hunting spree to stock up on some ingredients after the stall did so well. I saw a few missions available that could yield some good results. Would you like to join me at some point?” |

Kael would chuckle at the thought of both him and Andy bringing down that chicken. It was certainly a memory to be preserved for a lifetime. "Of course, you're right. I'm sure we can handle anything that comes, especially in a place like this." It wasn;t as if they were in a dangerous zone, after all. Besides, he was confident that both him and Andy can take any kind of monster that comes for them. Kael himself has had time to learn new tricks. [break][break]
"Sorry, sorry, new habits die hard." Being alert was the new norm for Kael. In truth, he had never been this on-the-edge, and his new experiences made his life just a bit more dangerous. Unused to it, Kael's actions were certainly more pronounced. He swore to himself that he needed to be more subtle. After all, this world was even more ruthless than what it used to be.[break][break]
Kael nodded along as Andy listed the best ways one can use slime. Specifically, soups! He had not even thought about that way. but bone broth soups would be nice with slime, at least, nice enough. The collagen certainly would make the dish more...of this world. He was about to respond when Andy continued further, which piqued his curiosity.[break][break]
"I'm more than happy to go hunting with you! I'm sure we can find a mission where hunting is the theme. Then we can hunt for extras for you!" Kael didn't mind helping his friend. After all, one cannot have too many friends in this day and age. Besides, he was sure Andy can make something amazing with whatever they hunted. "But you mentioned a stall? Did you open one recently?" He only knew of one person who had a stall, and that was Dee Dee.

Andy smiled when Kael chuckled and was glad he brightened up even if just a bit. It seemed like they had been having a hard time since the two last met. They were stiffer. It concerned him and he hoped that this trip would help him somewhat. “New habits? What have you been up to Kael?”[break][break] “I've already found a few. There is one to get rid of some Rush Boar that are causing problems and another to gather some Volt Deer horns.” Andy continued forward through the last portion of their hike. “I have some plans to start raising animals for meat in my restaurant when I set it up, but I haven't yet. I went to a festival and set up a temporary food stall to serve the patrons. Hopefully, I'll be able to set up shop soon.”[break][break] Soon enough they arrived at a large clearing in the trees that he'd found earlier. It wasn't anything spectacular, but it was just large enough for the two of them plus an area to cook and eat. There was a small stream running through the forest nearby. “So what do you think?” |

The laugh that escaped Kael's lips resounded around them. He had never thought he would be in this kind of a situation at all, nor would he have thought that he would be this nervous about a simple picnic. "This world happened, that's what." He grinned at his own answer, "The world has changed, and I now live by the phrase "Constant Vigilance!" by a character from a novel series I once loved reading." Due to copyright, it would be better for Kael not to mention it. It does rhyme with Barry Cotter, however. [break][break]
Gathering missions? Perhaps he should give those a try, hey? "Rush Boar? Those sound very intimidating indeed..." He wondered if he could tank those things? Maybe one day he'll find out! "Next time you go out on those kinds of missions, invite me! I'd love to try my hand at those, especially if it ends with barbecue for us!" Kael laughed at that.[break][break]
"Raising animals though? You'll need a track of land for that, I think. Maybe domesticate some animals, or buy some from those who already have them?" He gave it a thought, "But good on you for starting out! I wish I can do something like that. Instead, I'm stuck taking hits and being a professional bruiser, one who gets bruised for pay, that is." He chuckled at that thought, though his body was less happy.[break][break]
When they came to the clearing, Kael couldn't help but clap enthusiastically. "Wow! How'd you find this place! It's idyllic!" For a world like this, that is. "Let's set-up! Hey, do you think the water is drinkable?" He went to the stream and gazed into the rushing pool. He could see his reflection, and certainly seemed clean enough. But you never know...

Andy frowned in response to Mikael's smile. It was sad to see the new world hit the man so hard. “I'm glad we came out here. I think you need this vacation a lot more than I do. You can't constantly be on guard. You'll be stressed out all the time and that's not healthy to do.”[break][break] As Kael talked about future missions they seemed interested and somewhat excited. Andy somewhat regretted asking the man to join him. With how much they've been going through lately he didn't want to add more to their plate. Maybe a hunting trip would help boost their spirits. “We can make a rack of ribs at the end! Well, maybe more than one.”[break][break] “I've heard there is someone out there who sells animals as part of their Class. There are a lot of people who can grow or raise various things. It may be hard to find an area to start in, but I believe it's possible. There is a Guild opening that I think will be able to help me.” If anyone could do it it would be Jeanne-Marie. He felt bad that the bright smiling man was resorting to just being a mercenary. “I met a girl recently who wanted to find a printing press to spread her handmade books. I'm sure you'll find something that you'll want to do soon Kael.”[break][break] Kael's clapping startled Andy as he wasn't expecting such a loud sound so abruptly. He chuckled at himself as he placed his items around the area and began to set up. “I came out here for some business and decided to take a look around after we were done. I had a lot of things to think about, but didn't want to head back yet.” He dug around in his bugs until he found just what they needed. A water filter that he walked over to Kael before getting back to work. “It should be now. I got that for a few points from the system so it should work.” |

Stress was certainly what he felt, but he was acclimating to it well enough. At least, that was how he felt. "This is certainly a nice getaway. As for stress, well..." He paused a moment, before breaking out into a smile. "Well, I feel like I'm slowly getting used to it!" This was reality, after all. There was nothing really he could do but acclimate to the situation. Maybe he could do that in better ways, but Mikael knew he was at least trying his best. [break][break]
"That sounds like a plan! You know how I love myself a rack of ribs!" He salivated slightly with just the thought of it, though he made sure not to show it. That would just be embarrassing.[break][break]
Kael listened to Andy's explanation, and found himself nodding. "Yes, I've seen a few people who could do extraordinary things with seemingly ordinary professions." Take for example Andy! "I've heard of guilds prior, though I hope to adventure just a bit more before joining one. There's so much of the world to see, Andy! So much!" Dangerous as they may be. "I'll find myself though, don't worry. In fact, maybe my calling in life was to be a tank!" He was built for it, after all. [break][break]
As Andy handed him the water filter, Kael immediately set to work. He filled it up, drank, and then filled it up some more for Andy. "Here you go! Get something to drink first!" Waiting for a few moments for the man to et set-up, Kael continued, "So, what do you have planned today, Andy? Some barbecue? Maybe some roasted corn?" Kael smiled, though his stomach did gurgle somewhat. Maybe he was a bit hungrier than he initially thought...

Once again his friend tried to hide behind a smile. Well, not hide as Kael was openly stating he was stressed. As best he could at least. For some reason, they seemed reluctant to complain. “You know Kael you can talk to me about whatever.” Andy wasn't usually one to help with this sort of problem, but they've done more than enough to warrant it. He only hoped that they'd take him up on his offer. [break][break] As expected they perked right up when he mentioned ribs. Maybe if Andy offered a snack in return for Mikael telling him their problems they'd take him up on it. There was no use in forcing them though. However, it may be useful to teach the man to be a bit more selfish. It seemed they were already working towards it on their own. “How much have you seen so far? Is there any place in particular you're looking forward to?”[break][break] Andy wasn't expecting the man to fill up the filter for him when he was done, but in retrospect, he really shouldn't have been surprised. He took Kael's advice and drank his fill of water before getting to work. “I think I promised you some fried chicken before. Luckily I brought some sauces as well so I can grill you some if you'd prefer. Look in the fridge and find what you like.” [break][break] From his pack, he produced a square cutting board and threw it on the ground in the middle of the camp. The raised center of it unfolded before spitting out a sleek metallic state-of-the-art kitchen. While it was setting itself up he refilled the water filter and set it down on the counter when the transformation was complete. Then he turned on the fryer to allow it to come up to temperature while he worked. [break][break] Andy put on a white apron and quickly started preparing what he needed to cook their meal. Luckily all his ingredients were able to be stored in the Port Kitchen without a problem. Even the demonic chicken meat was safely tucked inside the full-size fridge with a few beers, other alcohol, and numerous other items.
