Mission Name: Sphinx's Riddles[break]
Repeatable? Y [break]
Mission Rank: E [break]
Mission Location: London[break]
Description: Despite being a "Safe" Zone, rumors say a fantastical beast has appeared in the streets of London. With the visage of a woman, the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and the tale of a serpent, it appears that the rumored creature is the Sphinx that was thought to once guard the city of Thebes. Like noted in her mythical roots, this Sphinx is filled with riddles. Those who claim to have seen her say they were forced to wager points on these riddles. Failing to correctly answer 2/3 of her riddles meant they lost five points, though they were otherwise unharmed. [break]
[Players participating in the Mission will take turns posting on behalf of the Sphinx, writing riddles for others to solve. Characters need not necessarily be together, but if they are, they cannot answer riddles together. Thread continues until everyone has solved (or failed) two riddles! (I don't anticipate failing to solve a riddle would actually make them lose points, but may make the individual fail the mission)] [break] Death Enabled? No. [break]

A small smolder of flame was burning out on one of the cuffs of his white button down and the tip of his stick was still giving off a trail of grey smoke. The ground where he had been was still on fire, black scorches cut into the dirt and burnt tendrils of webbing were scattered about. Everyone else looked worse for wear. Wes was covered in dirt and doubled over, his hands on his knees and gasping for air. Lighting Sword, a woman in her mid-forties with dark braided hair and dressed in her Sunday-best, had chunks of webbing stuck all over. Old Man had lost the blade he picked up and was standing in a strong pose, mock with triumph. He was clearly exhausted, but machismo kept his façade going. Only Crying seemed untouched. She sat there, her face hidden behind long brown hair, but shoulders and torso rhythmically moving with her quiet sob. As Glasses approached, a wicked grin grew across his face. Wes felt his stomach drop, just as it did when the first person disappeared. Old Man was first to speak. "Quite the display there, young man, " his voice sweet with approval and drenched in toxic, patriarchal notions of worth. Wes felt his stomach flip a second time. "Oh shut up" Glasses flicked his wand and torched the old man in a plume of flame. Horrid screaming filled the area, drowning out the ticking of the clock above. Watching the man slowly burn alive was more horrid than anything Wes had witnessed so far that evening. The screaming persisted for several seconds, before it began to die down and the body stopped moving. It crumbled over, a mesh of charred black beneath dancing flames gently laid fell to floor. The flames continued to flicker long after the screaming stopped. There was a small ding and the Round Two Complete message popped up once more. After not even a second of delay, the first digit in "5/30" spun downward to read "4/30". Another, louder buzzer sounded and the clock, which had still been in the 20s, disappeared. The third round started immediately. Still smirking, Glasses watched the corpse burn for a second longer before turning to the rest of the group. "Stay out of my way," he warned behind clenched teeth and a furrowed brow. He turned to face the forest as the eyes appeared once more. The round persisted much the same as it had done before. Wes stayed close to Glasses, letting the flames fend off the webs. There were a number of close calls, but Wes couldn’t tell if they were more from the webs or the flames. Lighting Sword stood around Crying and fended off the string of webs with her blade. Wes hadn’t noticed her defending anyone before, and wondered if that’s how Crying had survived so far, despite being cast out by the Second Round Group and not moving from her spot since. The shots of web continued for much longer than the second round and the group grew noticeably tired. Frustrated, Glasses waived his wand in a line between him and the forest, causing a wall of fire to roar alive. He then turned to Wes and pointed his wand at him. "You’re not doing anything!" he screamed. Wes winced away from the growing flames. He glanced toward Lightning Sword, briefly making eye contact before her attention was drawn back towards the shots attacking her. "I--I--" Wes stammered, struggling to provide any meaningful response. His attention was too fixated on the forest around him. Although Glasses wanted to talk, the forest would not wait. Drunk on power, Glasses’s face contorted once more into a sinister grin. He spoke slowly and softly, just barely audible over the flickering flame, "You don’t deserve to be here." He raised his arm and brought it down against Wes, intending to explode yet another survivor in a ball of fire. But nothing came out, no fire, not even a spark. Glasses motioned again, and again, and again. But still there was no more fire. "Work!" he shouted over and over. His wall of flames began to die, and Wes swore he could see more spiders crowded on that side of the forest compared to elsewhere. "Why won’t you burn?" his voice cracked and Wes thought he spotted tears welling in the man’s eyes. He continued, fruitlessly, to try to summon his flames. He swung and swung his stick of wood until a jettison of webbing caught him in the hand. And then another web caught him in the chest, a third string on his hip, a forth on his leg. He struggled to swing his arm free, "no, no, fire, fire." A fifth wad of webbing connected with his face, smothering his voice. Slowly, the five lengths of web pulled at Glasses, dragging him along the forest floor and into the darkness. Once his body disappeared, another bell chimed. A final message appeared before the three survivors: Round Three Complete 3/10
Top ten finish!
Would you like to go to the Safe Zone now?

[ ] No
Without even a moment’s wait, Wes pressed "Yes". The world around him dissolved once more. There was pushing and shoving, no one wanted to be the closest to the edge. Wes too found himself jockeying for a spot behind others. Eventually, the crowd settled in its arrangement. Not because anyone chimed in and offered a solution, or because someone rose to the occasion and surface as a leader. No. The stronger four pushed the weaker out and dominated the center. Wes was unfortunately among the weaker six. He never thought himself on the physically weak side—he was actively went to the gym and was athletic and young. But the people that now stood before him, that held weapons and hands out between themselves and those weaker seemed impossibly strong to him. Women half his size and men who looked like they’d never seen the inside of the gym out muscled-him and others. He was dumbfounded… and scared. One of the others that had been pushed to the outer rim as the man with the stick. If Wes had time to think about anyone other than himself, he would have stopped to ponder how this feeble, fragile looking man had mad it through. Not that Wes had any right to talk—he made it through the first round after falling to his knees in terror. He survived by pure luck. The man tried to push himself back into the center before being thrown on his ass by a short, balding gentleman. He picked his glasses up from where they had fallen and shifted them back onto his face. "What gives you the right, to do this?" his speech started timid but by the end was seething in anger. "HUH?" He stood up and pointed his stick at the circle. The older man took a small step forward, not enough to threaten his spot, but enough to directly confront his adversary. "Oh look, Harry Potter has his wand" he shouted, laughing and choking on his own spittle a little. He raised a sword and pushed it in the man’s face. Wes noticed it was the blade he saw earlier—that woman was gone now. Before Glasses had the chance to retort, the buzzer sounded again. Faster this time, the red eyes lit up the forest with their horrid glare. Tethers of sticky white once more came from the forest. They connected immediately on a couple of targets along the outer rim of the group. With a yelp, a scream, and a cry, three disappeared into the forest. One cord landed by Wes’s feet and he got his first good glimpse of the substance. It was think and wet, gooey almost in its appearance. He dared not touch it. Rather, he pushed backwards until he found himself pressed up against the central group. With a grunt, someone pushed him forward. Wes fell forward and landed beside Glasses and a frail woman who barely moved from her spot on the ground. Wes hadn’t even noticed her until now. Another volley of string shot out from the forest. There weren’t enough of the weaker folk to protect the center four and one of them was pulled away. The remaining three huddled closer together, eyeing one another as much as they eyed the forest. Another web hit Glasses. He shrieked, frantically waiving his hands in the air and trying to grab on to whatever he could. His fingers hooked into the shirt of the older gentleman, and when the web tried to pull Glasses away, both started to move. The added weight meant they didn’t go too far. The older man grabbed his hand around Glasses’s and began to pry the fingers away. "Get the fuck off of me you freak". Another tug moved them both closer to the edge of the ring and had the two wrestling more frantically, both for their own safety. A third final tug and a maneuver by the older man had him free from Glasses and had Glasses being dragged along the in the dirt. "No… No!" he flailed, tears streaming down his face. It was the longest anyone had taken to be consumed by the dark and Wes watched on in horror. Glasses continued to flail until another spark erupted from his stick. It lit up the area and a collective gasp escaped from the surviving members of the group. The fire rent the web, freeing its castor, but also revealing that behind each set of eyes, was a grotesque, gigantic black spider. "Ha, ha!" Glasses clamored to his feet. Another web shot toward him and a flick of his wrist brought a flame to melt the webbing. As more webs shot forward, he summoned more and more flames. When the spiders failed to catch the flame-wielder, they diverted their attention to the rest of the group. Encouraged by the feats of Glasses, however, they actively resisted. A number of times members were caught, but they used fantastical, supernatural abilities to free themselves. Gargantuan strength, a sword of lightning, the survivors each seemed to have something to protect themselves. All but Wes and the crying women beside him. He just actively dodged the webbing, ducking behind others who were too engaged with protecting themselves to worry about someone else hiding. After another minute, and after losing one more, the bell chimed signaling the end of the round. All that remained were Wes, Old Man, Crying, Glasses, and Lightning Sword. Round Two Complete *Pikachu Face* You figured it out! 5/30 remain. Grand finale starts in oneeeee minute.

The sky light up with a semi-translucent, blue "60" above the center of the clearing, and immediately, it began ticking down. Members of the crowd reacted… differently. One man, standing well over six-feet and with shoulders broader than any had the right to be, rushed for the treeline. He collided with the invisible, so-called "magical barrier" and fell backwards. He jumped back to his feet, felt forward, and then began pounding on the screen that kept them all trapped. Each collision of his fist sent a sparkle of color through the air—a ripple of green and purple light that provided a brief glimpse at (and proof of) the existence of the barrier. A woman nearby, the one that had been holding the sword a moment ago had fallen to her knees. Palms covering her face, she sobbed. Wes could just barely make out the mumblings, the pleadings of "please, I want to go home."Wes had an inkling that nothing would be heeding that prayer. A number of others were in some state between the two--in some varying degree of rage to sadness. Most, however, stood around doing nothing, much like Wes. There was a collective uneasiness, a palpable tension in there. Eyes would meet and quickly dart away, turning to look at the more active in the crowd or to steal a fearful glance at the timer above. Wes looked up into the night sky and watched as the timer ticked away. 3.. 2… 1… "ERRRRR" a buzzer blasted the area. The sound was so loud that Wes and several others covered their ears. There was a moment of silence after the buzzer, and it was another moment before anyone noticed that the silence was wrong. Wes glanced around, his eyes darting along the tree line, his feet on a swivel as he turned in place. He wasn’t the first to notice it, he didn’t think, but he did notice early that the screaming and pounding were gone. Where the burly man had been, Wes saw nothing. There was no sign that anyone had been there. An elderly woman no more than ten feet away from Wes followed his stare. When she realized what was going on, she stammered loudly "He—he’s gone". She took several steps forward, and Wes took several steps back, closer to the center of the clearing. "Maybe, maybe we can go now". Her voice cracked and her inflection waivered; her tone just wasn’t right. She was trying to convince herself more than anyone else. Wild-eyed and hands clasped around her body, she continued to stride forward to the forest, mumbling to herself over and over again that she could go home. When she was only a couple feet away from the clearing, she stopped. One by one, dozens upon dozens of glowing red lights appeared in the darkness. Catching the faintest glimmers of the moonlight and starlight above, these red gems twinkled with an ominous, sinister glow. Still wrapped in her delusion, the woman spoke to the lights before her. "Hello, are you here to take me home". A string of white shot from the forest, pelting the women in the stomach. Doubling over from the impact, she let out a faint gasp, before there was a slight tug. She stumbled forward, catching her balance. She grabbed on the sticky string and gave it a little tug. There was a tug back—a much stronger tug—that lifted the woman off the ground. Screaming, she flew through the air before disappearing into the dark and falling silent. Wes felt his skin crawl and a cold sweat made the crisp night-air feel unnervingly cold. He stared, wide-eyed and paralyzed at the twinkling red lights. He stared as others screamed and ran around the clearing. More and more slings of white thread flew from the unknown darkness and into the open area. Each strand was a pearly white, eerily pearlescent beneath the night-sky. Whenever a strand found its mark, another disappeared. Wes fell to his knees in horror. Person after person vanished, their screams trailing off in the dark. "DING" All at once, the red eyes vanished, and a message appeared before all those that remained. Round One Complete Congrats~ 10/30 remain. Next round begins in 60.
The timer appeared overhead once more. There were too many people, everything was too loud, and no matter how recently they were cleaned, they always felt so gross. If there was any other reasonable way to travel abroad, he would have done so in heartbeat. But instead, he was standing in DCA, waiting for his turn to pass through security. "Come’on" a disinterested voice called over. When Wes didn’t immediately move, the security guard yelled once more, this time with a bit of force. Wes stumbled up to the wood podium and slid his ID and boarding pass through the plastic screen. The security guard waved his ID over the scanner and barely gave Wes a glance before he ushered him forward. Wes shoved his ID and boarding pass back into his wallet. "Uh… thanks." "Next!"Wes rolled his eyes and made his way through the rest of security. He hated kicking off his shoes for the metal detector, but other than that, the rest of his experience was uneventful. Once through, he worked his way to his terminal, a full two hours ahead of time. Made it! Was worried I wouldn’t he texted a couple of friends. He genuinely had been concerned that leaving for the airport a full three hours before his arrival time placed him at risk for missing his flight. As he waited, Wes scrolled aimlessly through his phone. He was watching an absurd tik tok of a tattooed man chopping a block of wood when his phone stopped loading. He tried switching wifi, opening other apps, toggling airplane mode, but nothing worked. He took a headphone out and glanced around. Others at his terminal seemed to be similarly struggling with their phones. "Excuse me," an elderly woman’s voice croaked across the terminal. Wes turned to see her flagging down the same security guard he had the fortune to interact with earlier. Her hair was a frizzled gray mess and the aggression in her voice was equally distressing. The man tried to ignore her, but she persisted after him. She reached out and tugged on his arm, "My phone isn’t working, somethings wrong with your internets.""I can’t help you--" the man’s voice trailed off and his eyes seemed to unfix from her and onto something else. He reached up as if he was about to touch the woman on the face, but instead he poked the air. Not a second after he made the seemingly-random movement, he disappeared in what Wes could only describe as a flurry of pixels. The woman let out a screech and waved her hands through the air in front of her, trying to bat something away. Her scream cut out when she too vanished. Bewildered, Wes stared wide-eyed at the now empty space before him. There was silent pause, either because he was so engrossed or because the whole terminal froze, Wes didn’t know. But it was ended by a cacophony of yelling and screaming all around him. Others were disappearing, and others were witnessing the sudden departures. Everyone was vanishing. Frantically, he swiveled in place, looking for someone who might understand what was going on. He spotted young woman nearby who looked to be in similar state of shock with her mouth agape and her eyes welling with tears. Wes started to move toward her when a message appeared before him: CHOOSE A CLASS [ ] Chronomancer [ ] Horologist [ ] Rift Jumper Choose a class, what? Wes instinctively raised a hand to select one of the options. The motion made him realize that this must have been what the others had seen before they vanished. He recoiled, physically pulling his hand away with his other and clutching it against his chest. He couldn’t disappear like them. He was not going to select an option. A second messaged popped up: PICK OR YOU WILL DIE The emoticon was in stark contrast to the content. Die? DIE? Die from what? Is that what happened to the others? Did they not decide in time, so they died? Or did they make a decision and were killed by those pixels? Wes didn’t know what to do. Something told him it was safe to choose, that he would be much worse off if he failed to make a selection, but there was no way he could be sure. There was no answer, there was no certainty, there was just a leap of faith. He took a deep breath and slowly reached out once more. He tapped the first option, Chronomancer. The moment he did, his vision began to blur, the world disappearing around him in a flurry of hues of blue and green and pink. Or maybe it was he who was disappearing. Gone was the airport, and now he was outside. He found himself in a small clearing, no more than a couple dozen yards in diameter, and encircled by some of the densest trees and foliage that Wes had ever seen. There were others in the clearing, about 30. But none of the faces were familiar. Uh… hello?" he waived to a nearby group. They were too invested in themselves to pay any attention to him. One woman was handling a sword, she waived it through the air with an awkwardness that told Wes she was unfamiliar with the weapon—not that he would be able to do any better. Another man held what looked like a giant stick. When he moved it, a flicker of flame erupted from the tip. At the eruption, the group screamed and dispersed. All at once, a series of chimes resounded across the clearing, and with each sound a window appeared before a person: TUTORIAL THIS CLEARING HAS BEEN BLOCKED BY A MAGICAL BARRIER.
IN ONE MINUTE, THE BARRIER WILL FALL AND MONSTERS WILL ATTACK.
IF YOU SURVIVE ALL THREE WAVES OF MONSTERS, YOU PASS THE TUTORIAL.
What is going on? He looked to others once more. He guessed that his face mirrored the same confusion that dressed others. I can’t help that I need it all…
Born to an upper-middle class family in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., Wes was raised in a world of privilege. Anything he wanted, he had. His parents were more than willing to substitute time and affection with money and gifts. [break][break] Having already raised two children that were now adults, his parents were checked out of parenthood by the time Wes was born. The only one who really cared for Wes was his grandfather. Wes spent almost all of his free time with the old man, listening to the crazy-comical sagas from his childhood and the horror stories form his time at war. Wes cherished every tale.[break][break] On his tenth birthday, Wes’s grandfather gave him a pocketwatch that was simply referred to as the “family timepiece.” According to his grandfather, the timepiece dated back hundreds of years and was a gift from a king of Scotland to the head of the Clan Mackie. The history was as wild as some of his grandfather’s other tales, but young Wes reveled in its glory. He carried the pocketwatch with him everywhere and it is still his most cherished possession.[break][break] Before Wes was to start high school, his grandfather passed away. Devastated and feeling alone, Wes desired nothing more than leave home. He asked his parents to ship him off for military school or boarding school or anything else that would allow him to escape. It was then that he learned his grandfather left him a sizable inheritance—an inheritance that would cover the hefty price tag for a prestigious boarding school. [break][break]
The primadonna life, the rise and fall…
His new school in Connecticut was fine—he performed well, but not nearly to the same level of success he had grown accustomed to back home. Any arrogance he had was checked by his new and numerous, high-achieving peers. He got a boyfriend, Noah, and after they graduated, the two set out of for college in New York. They lasted a couple of months before Noah moved on for someone new.[break][break] The parting broke Wes. His studies slipped, he began failing courses, and he turned to the vices typical of a disinterested college student. Finding himself spiraling, he dropped out of college and took a gap year to travel abroad. Funded by the remnants of his inheritance, he traveled through Europe for the better part of ten months.[break][break] The experience wasn’t cathartic or transformative, but it was exactly what Wes wanted: a chance to get away. He left his world behind and learned to get over Noah and recenter himself. He spent a good deal of time in Scotland, tracing through his family history and learning as much as he could about his grandfather. He met distant relatives and heard different takes on familiar stories. He even did some research on the timepiece—although it probably wasn’t a gift from a monarch, it was very old.[break][break]
You say that I’m kinda difficult…
When Wes finally returned to the States, he reenrolled in school and finished his studies. After graduating, he moved back home in an effort to connect with his parents for the first time in his life. He spent a year working as a paralegal in his mother’s law firm and taking fishing trips with his father. There was some semblance of a normal family-life, and Wes found that his parents were much better “parents” now that he was more-or-less an adult.[break][break] During this time he applied for graduate school and was accepted into a history program in the U.K. He was getting ready to leave when the tutorial began.
