Born to an upper-middle class family in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., Wes was raised in a world of privilege. Anything he wanted, he had. His parents were more than willing to substitute time and affection with money and gifts. [break][break]
Having already raised two children that were now adults, his parents were checked out of parenthood by the time Wes was born. The only one who really cared for Wes was his grandfather. Wes spent almost all of his free time with the old man, listening to the crazy-comical sagas from his childhood and the horror stories form his time at war. Wes cherished every tale.[break][break]
On his tenth birthday, Wes’s grandfather gave him a pocketwatch that was simply referred to as the “family timepiece.” According to his grandfather, the timepiece dated back hundreds of years and was a gift from a king of Scotland to the head of the Clan Mackie. The history was as wild as some of his grandfather’s other tales, but young Wes reveled in its glory. He carried the pocketwatch with him everywhere and it is still his most cherished possession.[break][break]
Before Wes was to start high school, his grandfather passed away. Devastated and feeling alone, Wes desired nothing more than leave home. He asked his parents to ship him off for military school or boarding school or anything else that would allow him to escape. It was then that he learned his grandfather left him a sizable inheritance—an inheritance that would cover the hefty price tag for a prestigious boarding school. [break][break]
His new school in Connecticut was fine—he performed well, but not nearly to the same level of success he had grown accustomed to back home. Any arrogance he had was checked by his new and numerous, high-achieving peers. He got a boyfriend, Noah, and after they graduated, the two set out of for college in New York. They lasted a couple of months before Noah moved on for someone new.[break][break]
The parting broke Wes. His studies slipped, he began failing courses, and he turned to the vices typical of a disinterested college student. Finding himself spiraling, he dropped out of college and took a gap year to travel abroad. Funded by the remnants of his inheritance, he traveled through Europe for the better part of ten months.[break][break]
The experience wasn’t cathartic or transformative, but it was exactly what Wes wanted: a chance to get away. He left his world behind and learned to get over Noah and recenter himself. He spent a good deal of time in Scotland, tracing through his family history and learning as much as he could about his grandfather. He met distant relatives and heard different takes on familiar stories. He even did some research on the timepiece—although it probably wasn’t a gift from a monarch, it was very old.[break][break]
When Wes finally returned to the States, he reenrolled in school and finished his studies. After graduating, he moved back home in an effort to connect with his parents for the first time in his life. He spent a year working as a paralegal in his mother’s law firm and taking fishing trips with his father. There was some semblance of a normal family-life, and Wes found that his parents were much better “parents” now that he was more-or-less an adult.[break][break]
During this time he applied for graduate school and was accepted into a history program in the U.K. He was getting ready to leave when the tutorial began. [break][break]
I can’t help that I need it all…

The primadonna life, the rise and fall…
