The hand twitched. The battlefield reeked of copper, and as silver eyes opened blearily to the dour grey of a clouded sky, there came the unmistakable pulse of pain reverberating from all over his body.
Groaning, he lifted his head and tried to take stock of the damage. Various parts of him were jabbed through with arrows—the first signs of the ambush, and in the end, his downfall. Bandits, he could take. Their knives he could counter with the strength he had accumulated, but that strength fell to their numbers.
He tried to rise. The stab of an arrowhead in his side sends him back to the puddle, another impact to his skull—as if a club wasn’t enough. At the very least, his surroundings were silent. Not a single breath amidst the mess of limbs and rags.
His throat felt dry. He wanted water. Everything hurt. When was the last time he ate?
Perhaps this was why he had been told not to take on these explorations alone.
His eyes fell shut, tired of how the world spun. It was tempting to be lulled to sleep; his thoughts now were occupied by comforting memories of warm apartments, of the last meal he had before he left, of the fretful companion that had told him to be careful.
