With two parents in the entertainment industry, Hana was always destined for stardom. Of some sort. Her and her parents just couldn't ever quite agree on the how, why or when.

Her mother enrolled her in dance classes almost as soon as she could walk, and her actor father always bragged that she picked up her first word, cut, on the set of one of the many commercials she appeared in as a child. Piano lessons, vocal coaches, language tutors. They carefully, lovingly, prepared her to properly debut as a traditionally trained actress and musician.

Hikari Utano had already conquered the Japanese charts and made an impact in China and Korea, but it was her arrival in America that solidified her place near the top of the music world. And made her Hana's favorite musician.

Her parents wanted Hana to be just like them, but she wasn't like them. She was like Hikari. Parents from different countries, different backgrounds. Formally trained, all the right connections, free ticket as long as she just followed in their footsteps.

Hana was determined to debut as a musician, a singer, a songwriter, a solo act. Not as just one of the girls in the group. Not as just one actor in the ensemble. She still loved working with other peformers, but she needed to stand on her own to prove something to her parents. And herself.

She learned to play through online tutorial videos and backstage conversations with adult musicians her parents knew. She posted her own videos. Covers, mostly. Mostly of Hikari's songs. Parodies, jokes. A few original, serious songs, when she felt confident enough. Hana cultivated a following, while somehow still keeping up with her studies, including all of the extra training her parents demanded. They pushed, and pushed, and she didn't break. Hana didn't give up.

Hikari was planning a special show. A sneak peak of her latest album. Just for the record executives and other performers on the label. Friends and family. Influencers. A few dozen lucky super fans. A few hundred more watching the unrecorded live stream. Hana's parents were invited. Hana was not invited.

She mostly remembers crying. Crying when she heard the news, crying while stressing out during preperations, crying while finally meeting Hikari. Hana barely managed to pull it together in time for her performance, but makeup thankfully hid most of the evidence of her nervousness.

Hana survived the performance. She didn't embarrass herself. Some people even knew who she was, knew the words to the one original song between the Hikari covers.
