Just another day sitting in front of his computer typing away for another thesis about the weather. One that covered the variables that could cause the storms to shift on the spectrum of being worse then predicted or weaker in scale. It still wasn’t enough for the obsessed scholar, he wanted to know how they could control those factors and bring them under a bit more control to limit the scale of devastation that came to families and areas that weren’t ready for a storm that had been projected to be a minor drizzle turning into one that causes flooding and lose of life. “There has to be more that we can do, I just need more money and information to be able to figure it out.” Crom grumpled out loud in his empty lab. He had been the last one of the day to leave the lab as was normal for him and his colleagues, he had spent many a night here sleeping in the break room to continue his research as needed. If anything he practically lived in this building now compared to his mostly empty and void home that he owned. “Just a waste of gas and time to be honest.” Crom reasoned to himself as if he wasn’t simply using his desire for the impossible to keep him from facing the reality that he had lost his parents and siblings all that time ago. It had been a few years now from when the incident had happened but it was a fresh to Crom as if he was getting the news every day he woke up. His eyes were tired and agitated and he was almost out of coffee. “Alright refill time, Small break then back to the grind of going through all this paperwork and finishing up this document.” Crom said to himself as he stretched in his chair and went to get up from his desk. It was then when a strange noise could be heard as if it was coming from outside the door, and then a sound like a “ding” was heard in Crom’s head and a pop-up was displayed from someone or something called “Earth-Chan”. Crom read the message and at first simply thought he had fallen asleep at his desk and now was dreaming about some strange Manwha he had read in his very limited free time. “Oh so we all get classes huh, I bet what happens next is we are under attack by horrible goblins or some other lame monster.” Crom mocked to no one just simply to the air. “The System has offered you the choice of these three classes. Please make a decision on which you would like to take.”- Wizard
- Storm Lord
- Silver Knight
“Alright I need to stop reading so much because this is ridiculous, but since this is a dream I’ll play along.” He said making his selection of “Storm Lord” as he had always wanted to be someone that controlled the very weather and honestly who doesn’t want to be able to be a lord of some kind. “You have Chosen Storm Lord, Very well. Good Luck.”

“Good luck? Wait what is going?” Crom questioned as he knew this couldn’t be a dream he was to awake, more awake then he had felt in ages since the incident. He felt like he could power through another 50 page thesis and still have energy to actually play his backlog of video games that had been piling up over the years. “Wait so is this real? I’m not dreaming? What was it that was always said in those mangas and manwhas?” He thought to himself as he could a loud bang and rustle down the hall. It sounded like fighting was happening in the building and it was only getting closer to his position.
Another notification appeared before him,
“Welcome to The Tutorial you racoon’ed eye looking dork. You must either survive till the time runs out, Defeat all the enemies in the building or be the last survivor. That’s right if you can win this one by simply being the only one left alive, though I doubt you will make it.
30/30 Enemies Remaining, 12/15 Survivors Remaining. 1:45:00 Remaining”
Crom was taken aback from this notification, this was written as if some troll from 4-chan had somehow been giving all the power in the world and decided to force everyone to fight to the death and suffer for their amusement.
“Earth-Chan will remember that”
A small notification appeared to the side of his big one explaining his current quest. “Oh come on you vindictive little shit.” Crom said aloud, but this wasn’t the time to be panicking or getting into a dissing match with some unknown and unseen being that obviously had enough power and strength to force at least this area into a game of their own choosing. Crom needed to figure out what was going on, who he was facing and what he was able to do now that he had a Class. “Display?” Nothing. “Class?” Nope. “Status?”
Ping
A new screen popped up in front of Crom’s face and it listed a variety of things from his “Power” to listing what his Class was and what it did. Though there were plenty of parts that seemed void or not completed yet, but that’s a thing to study and figure out once he was done here.

“Come on, Come on.” Crom muttered to himself as he scrolled through the description of his Class. It seemed it literally gave him the ability to conjure weather like things. He could make a wall of thunderclouds that acted as a defense, shoot lightning like he was thor and make some kind of Blizzard Area of effect with a debuff attack. What he really liked was his passive for his class that when in combat he was able to make a veil of silvery fog that could debuff whoever enters it and hide him too.
While he had been busy reading through this description he had been moving desks and chairs and anything with any kind of real weight to block the only way into the lab currently. He wasn’t sure if he was going to go out and fight these enemies or if he would sit and hide and be a little coward. Crom had been in a slew of fights with other people growing up and even had some run in with the more seedy side of society but those had been other humans and you could to an extent rationalize with them. You could give them what they want, avoid them completely or beat them into submission. At least there were choices when dealing with humans, but these were monsters and if any video game had taught him anything they weren’t going to be smart or caring enough to simply allow him to live cause he made a good point.
No he needed to defend his current spot and then make a plan based on what he could figure out. Having left one of the desks where it was Crom went onto the computer to try and see if he could pull up any news or information but he found that he couldn’t even get the damn thing to turn on anymore. Fearing the worst he quickly pulled out his phone from his pocket and tried to turn that one on too. Luckily this turned on but the internet, anything that displayed any actual world information beyond time and date wouldn’t work. He did notice his game apps that didn’t need to be online work just fine so that was a interesting thing. “Well I guess I won’t be bored in this world changing and probably ending event.” Crom said with enough sarcasm to choke a giraffe with. He returned his phone to his pocket and went to the windows to see if he could spot anything happening outside, what he noticed was fog. A wall of fog so thick he felt that he could reach out and cut a piece of it like some old time cartoon. He couldn’t even see the ground and he was only on the second floor, but he could hear something moving below him. Something was in the fog and Crom had no desire to figure out what it was so he moved away from the windows.
“I’m going to assume that is out of bounds and respectfully not bother whatever is out there.” He said with a tone of someone that had come to terms with his impending death. A scuffle at the door seemed to back up this understanding as the door knob rattled as if someone with some kind of intelligence was trying to get into the room and was shocked that it was locked. At first Crom simply thought it was another survivor trying to find a place to hide and had come to this room but then a faint fog started to form around Crom as if one of the windows from outside had been opened which caused Crom to panic himself looking to the windows. They were all shut though, so he studied the fog that was filling the room and remembered that his own ability from his Class. This was his passive that activated anytime he was in combat, it meant that whatever was trying to get in wasn’t something friendly.
Whatever was outside must have noticed the fog coming in from under the door and scrurried away. It seemed that it had mistaken that fog for the fog that was outside, this just made Crom even more paranoid about what was lurking outside and he figured he would close the curtains and move as far away from the windows as he could for fear of whatever creature outside deciding that he looked tasty and wanted to pop on in for a treat.
“How long has it been?” He wondered to himself, it took a moment but Crom figured out how to bring up the Tutorial information. He read over it once more looking at the numbers at the bottom,
“28/30 Enemies Remaining, 5/15 Survivors Remaining, 1:25:37 Remaining.”
“Well it looks like someone was able to take out whatever is roaming around the halls.” A slight smirk appeared on Crom’s face. It looked like if he could simply wait out a bit longer he would be the last alive and simply win if the message was any kind of truthful. It was cowardly and Crom knew that it would haunt him that he simply did nothing but hide and survive but he didn’t have friends here and he didn’t feel any real desire to save others or go out in a blaze of glory being drunk on his newly received power.
Ping
“Clarification Added: While you can “win” the tutorial by being the last Survivor you will still have to survive the full amount of time also.”
Crom stared at disbelief at this new notification. He had hoped that once he was the last one alive he would simply win and be freed of this trial but instead this was much worse then what was implied because he would then have to also survive for the remaining time by himself against however many enemies were left. “This is bull.” He stated through grated teeth. “Fine, lets thin out the herd then.” Crom said as he started to move thing from the door listening for any noises that would imply something was there.

“20/30 Enemies Remaining, 3/15 Survivors Remaining, 59:00 Remaining.”
The halls had been silent at least in his area, It seemed most of the monsters had moved onto the other floors. Crom was thankful for that but he wasn’t thankful to see the scenes left behind by those monsters. Mutilated corpses and various remains filled the rooms as he passed by. Broken doors and scattered fragments of desks and shelves filled the halls, it seemed that others had used the same idea that Crom had but the monsters simply didn’t care. He was truly lucky that he had an ability that fooled whatever had tried to enter the lab earlier into thinking it was the fog from outside.
If he was lucky he might be able to capitalize on this information and cause some more confusion. Then it appeared, his silver fog that hide him from sight Crom didn’t know how well it worked but he hoped that at least against whatever was roaming the halls it was enough. Now he scanned the area looking for whatever had caused his ability to activate, he was on guard and as ready as he could ever be. Then he saw it enter the hall way dragging the remains of someone, a goblin standing at what looked to be 3 feet in height. It looked like any goblin Crom had seen in his anime, games and all that. “Well at least that is helpful.” The goblin was followed by another and another and well you can see how this is going. A group of goblins started to fill the hallway looking at the flowing fog in puzzlement and with a twinge of fear. They talked to each other pointing and jabbering. Crom moved closer he needed to if he was going to attack, his ability to use lightning said it needed to be within 10 feet to hit anything so he moved till he was. This caused some of the goblins to be in the mist and they seemed to move weirdly, as if they were being weakened in some way and it panicked them. Before they could react though Crom used his ability to shoot a lightning bolt at the nearest goblin standing 8 feet away.
A crack of lightning jumped from his hand and struck the first goblin killing it, then like a chained effect it jumped to a nearby goblin ending that ones life too. With the death of two goblins, the other 4 ran from the cloud of mist that had taken lives already. “Well glad they are pretty dumb because I’m out of actual attacks.” Crom thought to himself as he moved closer to the corpses. They twitched but Crom reasoned that it was from remaining electricity in their bodies and pulled up the information window to check that the number had gone down by at least 2. When he checked he noticed it had gone down by more then 5 though.
“12/30 Enemies Remaining, 3/15 Survivors Remaining, 48:00 Remaining.”
“Well that’s good. It seems that the other two are clearing out monsters pretty well. I beat one of them is someone who is good at close range combat.” Crom told to no one in particular as he continued to wonder the hallways. The next group of goblins he came upon were busy indulging in a meal of some poor person, Crom made his orb of ice and snow and tossed it at them. It busted open engulfing an area in a miniature blizzard slowing and freezing these goblins making it hard for them to move at the speed they were use to. Crom struck the first one with his fist feeling quite strong now. It seemed when receiving his class his physical abilities had improved or at least his strength had as he could now at least fight with his hands against these creatures and that’s what he did. Crom dispatched the two goblins without much issue thanks to their slowness, but now Crom was out of abilities that he could use to help even the field with these creatures and it was time to go back to his hiding hole.
So Crom retraced his steps and returned to his lab. Bunkered down and made sure that he kept an eye on the door and the information window. The time counted down and he watched as the numbers shortened.
“0/30 Enemies Remaining, 3/15 Survivors Remaining, 9:48 Remaining. Congratulations You have Successfully completed the Tutorial. Now you can go and Join the rest of your friends.”
The window changed and showed the completion of the task. Now it offered to send him to a safe zone and Crom quickly pushed that button and felt relief.
