The air was warm and dry. Dakota lay in bed tossing and turning. His dreams were vivid and ominous. He was back on the reservation. His father and siblings were several yards away. He had stopped to pick up the husk of a snake’s skin. The paperlike material crumbled away in his fingers. Before he realized it, his family was leagues ahead, almost like ants on the horizon. He stood up and yelled but nobody turned around to wait for him. As he started to run, Dakota noticed that his legs and arms were quite small. Was he a child in this dream? He yelled again but they were completely out of sight. Why weren’t they stopping for him? What was this dream? The desert around him started to twist and turn. The stars in the sky streaked across the sky so fast and so plentiful that the sky become as bright as the sun. A dull voice bellowed throughout the dream. “Dakota…Dakota…Wake up.” A small brown fox stood on a nearby rock and stared at the young man. A simple nod of his head shook Dakota down to his core. In a flash, he woke up. Sweat was pouring from his forehead. Muscle memory had him trying to kick off blankets but he soon discovered there were none there. A chilling breeze shocked his body and suddenly he was shivering cold. He was no longer in his apartment but out in the open. How did this happen? He looked up and saw the stars. His father used to teach him the various patterns of the year but the ones above him seemed strange and new to him. Something was out of place about them. Constellations seemed to have moved and shifted. Dakota was so confused. Was this a dream in a dream? Here he was out in some remote canyon with text screens popping up before him. Like some game, his younger brother would play. After a few moments, the screens faded and a new one popped back up. What the fuck did that mean? A piercing howl bellowed throughout the canyon causing the hairs on the back of his neck to stand. No longer was he sitting on the ground but now standing up. He reached into his pocket to find his cellphone was there but it didn’t seem to be working. The howling continued and seemed to be coming closer. “Shit…shit…shit.” Dakota now realizes that he was actually in a life or death situation was becoming frantic. Judging by the environment around him, he knew he was still in the desert. Which meant those howls were from coyotes and not wolves. That was good at least. Coyotes could be spooked and chased off. Wolves, not so much. “Okay, so that screen said I have to survive the Caynon Crawl. I wonder what that means…” His eyes scanned the dark space around him. That was when he noticed several fires burning up at the top of the canyon. “That must be where I need to go.” Before he was several rock structures, it took only a moment for him to notice the worn path between two of the rocks. A small symbol seemed to have been carved out on the mineral. He rubbed his finger on the rock, tracing the symbol. It had no significance to him. He turned back to look at where he was one last time before heading down the path. |

"PREPARE TO PERISH, FOUL BEAST!" Zhao bellowed, holding out a hand to what he perceived to be a creature - a black humanoid figure with 'Anonymous' floating in front of it, always facing him.
What he didn't know, is that his figure was actually Dakota. The System was playing games on his perception, not allowing him to see other players just yet, at least for the duration of this trial, the Canyon Crawl. He didn't know this, though. He didn't know either that his own figure and voice would be distorted by the same effect as well.
"Summon Apocalypse level ten!" he commanded as he showed a palm. Nothing happened. "Fireball!" he insisted. Nothing. "Sword, I call you forth!" he then yelled. Nope. "King Arthur, wielder of Saber, I call you!". Nah.
He had selected the Summoner Class, previously. He had no idea how to actually use it, though, much to his embarrassment. Was it a summoner like in Final Fantasy Tactics where you just had really strong spells? Or did you actually call forth a material creature which then did your bidding? He had no idea.
"Ha! You've been lucky this time." he chuckled. "The game must be holding back my immense power, for balance reasons. That's understandable. But I'll let you know that I was a god gamer before the world ended. Beating up monsters like you will be a piece of cake for me!"
Once he figured out how to do anything, that is.

That's why they liked smaller boulders so small they were mere grains, they could bury itself in it, use it for protection and for surprise. So far they found that with a simple stab of its tail they could take down nearly all those fleshy things they had seen. Ever since they opened their eyes they had one desire; kill and eat. By grabbing one of those squishy things it was easy to hold them down and stab them.[break][break] They found they rather liked the sound they made, how they squirmed, but soon they stopped after it injected them. It snapped its pincers, quickly snatching up another person that had tried to hide behind the boulder. A red liquid ran down its arm, and with a simple motion it raised the fleshy thing up, then slammed it down into the ground. Once, twice, and then a third. The squishy thing stopped moving then but more red liquid came out. It bit into it, before tossing the body toward the side, this one tasted gross. Perhaps it was the brown and yellow stuff that came from it when it stopped moving. [break][break] Yuck! One of them tossed the squishy thing toward the area of a nearby ledge. Finding that it flew and landed near some squishy things coming up a rocky path. [break][break]  [break] As Dakota, and Zhao walked up the rocky path they would hear scurrying, a dark visage would make its way forward before revealing itself to be a giant scorpion. This scorpion was a size just a little bigger than that of a full-grown wolf being 3 feet in height with a tail that ran just as long. Dakota slowly walked up the path. While it was the dead of night, the stars and moon overhead gave him enough light that he could see decently. He had only been walking for a few moments when he heard a rustle in a nearby bush. While he continued to walk, he did so at a much slower and more careful pace. As he approached the sound, Dakota would slowly reach down and find a large stone that he could hold with one hand. If something was about to jump out at him, he wanted to have something that could help him in a fight. That popup screen did say he had to survive. That meant that there was something actively trying to kill him right?

All of a sudden, a loud voice rang out. While Dakota could not see the face of the individual, he did see a weird ‘Anonymous’ display hovering over the figure’s head. The sound of their voice shifted from a deep male to a high-pitched female. The silhouette seemed like a basic blank avatar, all white and black. Was this the thing that was trying to kill him?

As a series of commands were shouted out by the figure, Dakota took a step back. Expecting for something to happen but nothing ever did. “Ummm…you okay?” Unaware that he too was experiencing this weird distortion. “I think, we’re here for the same reasons? I’m D̶̖͍̮̱̘̏̑ä̵̧̛͇͔̘̝͗̾ͅk̷̡̬̙̹̥̈́͋̔̿o̵̢͎̫̩̠͛̀̽̐͝t̶̼̉̌͆̾a̶̗̋͑̋̏̽̚”

“Have you been out here for long?” Before he could get a response the sound of a boulder from up above echoed throughout the whole canyon as it bounced its way down. While it was close enough to be heard, Dakota didn’t really get a chance to see where it came from. “What was that?” He looked around trying to figure out what was going on. Not but a moment later, something else came flying down towards the pair. As it landed, blood and bile splashed, striking Dakota right on the face. His expression went from a confused panic to a full-blown disgusting appearance. “Oh my god! What is this? Blood?” He started to frantically wipe his face trying to clear it of the warm liquid.

He was so hyper-focused on the juices along his face that he almost was unaware of the sound of something scurrying towards them. The snapping of pincers is what really drew his attention. The Shaman would turn to look towards the sound, still with smeared liquids on his face. What he saw, made him scream in shock. ” Jesus Christ!” It was a giant scorpion. One that had to be the size of a wolf or small bear. He’d never heard of a scorpion this size. Dakota took a few steps back, still holding onto his rock. Without any thought, the man threw the rock right at the scorpion, hoping to maybe scare it away.

Indeed, that explanation seemed to fit what was going on - magical videogame powers? A new world, with other 'players' like him? Anime has already taught him what this meant.
"Are you using some kind of anonymization spell-" he tried to ask, but he was interrupted midway.
"-GOD HOLY FUCK" he bellowed once the scorpion burst into view. "JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, FUCK. WHERE IS THE POLICE, POLICE? THE ARMY? ANYONE, FUCKING HEEEEEEEEELP"

"You called?" she scoffed.
"FUCK! THERE'S MORE! AAAAH!" Zhao bellowed, and started to waddle-run as quick as his stubby legs would take him, away from the female.
"...Master?" the summon muttered, wondering why he was fleeing from her. "M-master. MASTER, I'M YOUR SUMMON, DUMBASS!"
"Wait. Really?" he immediately stopped and turned to face the impossible girl. She sighed heavily "...Yes. Unfortunately."
"HI-HIMARI-CHAN IT'S REALLY YOU?-"
"Shut up. Scorpion, it's going to kill us. You need to foc- GAH! HIYAAAAH!" she turned to face the approaching beast and attempted to pummel it away with a few well-placed punches. "Master! Focus! Use your abilities! Now!"
"Y-yes! O-of course! Uuuh, abilities, abilities...." he stammered, and started to browse through his menus in an attempt to find something useful.
And, he still hadn't realized it, but he was actually encased in the image of a body pillow, with two other similar images having appeared nearby.

The rock smashed into the scorpion’s head right, though it appeared to offer little more than a distraction. ”Shit….” Dakota took a few steps back. Ready to start hightailing it back down the path. He didn’t think something like this would happen. Maybe a snake, maybe some coyotes,but not a scorpion the size of a house pet. ”Hey, I think we need to-“ he stopped in mid sentence as he noticed another weird thing appearing. Like the one before, their body, face, and voice were not all there. Not only that, but the guy he was talking to before was all of a sudden gone and now replaced with three body pillows? Was this some sort of glitch in the matrix?

The new being called the pillows it’s master? Was that guy from before hidden inside them? What an odd ability. That’s when Dakota remembered that he had chosen a class earlier, a Native Shaman. He frantically looked around him to see if there was something that would tell him what’s going on. ”Jesus, what did I do to deserve this? Can I do something too? Surely to god I have some sort of ability.” A pop up screen appeared asking him if he wished to summon his Spirit Fox. Dakota clocked yes immediately, frantic for some sort of aid.

The scorpion had turned its attention to the figure that was currently pummeling it, giving Dakota enough time to get his ducks in a row. After confirming the summoning, white and blue pixels started to appear around him and the space before him rippled. Out stepped a small fox creature who was semi translucent. Dakota stared at the beast and it at him. What seemed like a solid minute was in reality just a few moments. “ Are you my spirit fox?” Dakota didn’t know what he was expecting for the fox to just stare back at him and blink. Still, time was precious and he had to see what he could do. Having seen his fair share of Pokémon back in the day, 9 year old Dakota took charge. “Okay, tackle that scorpion!” The fox immediately obliged and ran straight at the monster. The creature, still engaged with the other summoning, totally ignored the fox. As the spirit made contact with the scorpion, it would phase through to the other side. Dakota’s face become covered in shock. Did his attack do nothing? That’s when he noticed the scorpion had flinched at that action, maybe the fox did do something after all.

Desperate, he flipped through the menus, finding Friends, Teleports (which were disabled here), Forums... but not anything about abilities.
"Gah! Chiiiikushou!" he cursed, rattling his hammy fists in the air. "Where are my abilities?"
"Master?" Himari wondered.
The sound of his waifu - his actual, real waifu, made flesh and pixels, talking to him; it awoke something primal in him. His inner chad took control. He assessed the situation, thought of the tactics that he could make use of. Everything started to click like when he was deeply behind in Legends of the Leagues and had to figure out a masterful comeback.
"Himari. Keep on the offense." he announced, solemnly. "You, other guy. Good going with the wolf. I can't contribute with much, but there's one thing that I do know: I don't want the only things we have that seem to be able to actually attack to die. That means my purpose here is clear"
He squared up to the scorpion and held out his hands. "I'm going to have to tank."
"COME AT ME!" he yelled at the beast, and started to wiggle provocatively. "YEAH, I'M RIGHT HERE, EASY TARGET, EASY MEAL. COME AND GET SOME!"
"Kkkkkkrrreeeeeeee!" the scorpion loudly hissed, and threw itself towards the fat man, and whacked him into the air with a claw, sending him flying - or rather... just a mass of feathers. He had popped one of his pillows, not Zhao himself.
"Take this!" Himari exhaled as she took that moment as a chance to flank and punch the beats.
"What?" the summoner muttered, confused. Wait. He had another of those pillows, just floating next to him. What were they? Allies?
"Hey, are you here to help too?" he asked the remaining pillow.

So it was clear that the new person was the servant of the first person. What wasn’t clear was this whole pillow thing. Where did they come from? Was this an ability? Dakota was still a bit frantic and unsure of the world that he was in. While he wasn’t an avid videogame player, he did know that in games typically you had a menu screen with info on your skills. “Status…” nothing “Abilities! …” still nothing appeared. “Shit…” Dakota took a few more steps back before he felt his back slam against the rocky cliffside. The scorpion was still too focused on the other guy’s summoning and Dakota’s fox to really focus on the pink-haired man. Lucky him.

“Urggg, Menu?” all of a sudden multiple screens popped up before Dakota. One had his status and vitals information. Another mentioned his inventory, which was empty. While a third had his abilities listed. Thank god. Dakota scanned them over quickly and soon realized that his Fox Spirit was his only line of offense. The other skills seemed rather mediocre and not useful in this situation. Good thing for him, the character he couldn’t see was all in on this fight. Dakota heard the man yell from within one of the pillows and saw his summoning start to go wild, smacking the scorpion from behind. Seeing his chance, Dakota took it.

“Okay fox, attack it again!” The fox bounced up from the underbelly of the monster and phased through to the other side. The scorpion let out a hiss and screech. Was it from his fox or was it from the combo of attacks that were coming at it from all sides? Whatever the case, Dakota felt that maybe they might live through this ordeal. “Okay! Let’s push this bastard down the cliff. Think we can?” He asked one of the weird body pillows, not knowing if the person he was chatting with before was in that particular one or not.

"F-fuck that was close!" he exhaled, shivering in terror, as the claw had narrowly missed him. The attacks were real, all of this was. Christ. He could actually fucking...
...die.
"...P-push?" he wondered, still terrified.
"That's a good idea!" Himari bellowed. "Master, we should do it!"
Zhao's brow furrowed. It was a good idea. But the only problem was the beast's giant claws - it wasn't just going to let itself be manhandled just like that. But he knew what had to be done. Of all of them there, the most rotund, immense and robust of them all, was him. His instincts didn't want him to, but his gamer god logic knew what had to be done.
He had to keep tanking.
"I-I'll keep his claws occupied!" he cried out, and rushed over to the front of the beast and held his arms open again. "COME AT ME, BEAST!"
"KREEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" it screeched, and swept down a claw towards the easy target, using its body's full inertia to do so. It connected, sending manblubber sloshing violently across Zhao's body along streaks of bright red fluid.
"AAAAAAAH FUUUCK THAT HURTS!" the gamer yelled, now with a slash across his torso, having torn open his shirt, leaving this chest and belly exposed, leaking blood. "FUCK, IT HURTS! IT HUUUUURTS! FUUUUCK!"
He collapsed to the floor with a loud thud, and the other pillow vanished in a poof of feathers.
The damage was real, Zhao realized. Things actually hurt.
They hurt so fucking bad. Christ, he wanted to just stop existing.
"PUSH!!" Himari yelled as the beast was still reeling from its heavy move, and attempted to shove the beast off the cliff, using the gamble it had made with its balance against itself.

Dakota watched for a moment, it seemed that this pixel friend of his was quite the character. His screams and antics seemed to really do Dakota a favor. The scorpion hardly even noticed the Shaman. Instead, it focused its attention to the pillows and the other man’s summon. While he had not climbed far up the canyon, the drop was still at least 40 to 50 feet. Enough to kill a man, perhaps even a scorpion.
As one of the pillows rushed the scorpion, Dakota and his fox readied themselves. Right as he was about to go, he noticed one of the pillows was struck right in the torso region. Before his eyes a flurry of feathers and cloth rained down upon the canyon. Dakota was momentarily stunned. What the actual hell was going on? His pause did. It last long, once he saw the red blood that splattered the ground, his legs began to move. “AHHHHHH!” He screamed as he slammed his brawny body into the exoskeleton of the scorpion. As he slammed, his fox would phase right through the beast’s legs.
Maybe it was Dakota’s added force, maybe it was his hidden friend's sacrifice, but the scorpion began to budge. As Felix phased the the beast's leg, it seemed to be the final straw. The slip up of its leg would cause the beast to lose its footing. With the three of them pushing, it had no way of preventing itself from sliding back and off the cliff. The night’s moon illuminated the fall. The beast would end up jabbing itself with its own leg right in its abdomen. A cry of death rang out throughout the canyon. Dakota fell. Ack down onto the ground for a moment. Still trying to process what the fuck actually just happened.

After the push, Zhao would be on the floor, curled up around his wound. He had never felt this much pain in his life. He loudly hissed through his teeth as he tried to breathe.
"Master!" Himari would yell out, and rush to his side. "Hold on, I can try something. I think."
Zhao could only nod. The summon pushed him to a side to get access to his backpack, and then pulled out a bottle of water they had scavenged for earlier, and a change of clean clothing. Gently, she cleaned off the blood with the water, to then improvise and dress the wound with the spare shirt, pants and several knots.
"Fuck this hurts..." he muttered, as he grit his teeth and the summon did what she needed to. "Thanks."
"If you die, I die." she admitted with a constipated face, then tossed her head away, sending her twin pink pigtails flopping against her cheeks. "Don't think anything of it."
"-U-uh. ...Alright." he replied, before turning his head to see where Dakota may be. He found him on the dusty ground nearby, probably as exhausted and freaked out as he was. And there was no scorpion. They must've made it. Yokatta.
"A-are you alright?" he asked him. Thankfully, he didn't seem injured, but he wanted to be sure. He then tried to roll himself up and sit on the ground, but he had to wince as he did so. The large scrape across his chest and belly burnt with pain with any movement he made. "I'm... not sure we should just wait here for too long. We need to keep... moving. W-we're too exposed out here."
Himari got under his shoulder. "Yeah. C'mon Master, stand up."
"Right." he exhaled, then stumbled on his legs, but then got himself upright with her left, leaning on his waifu's support.
"We have to keep moving, but where do you figure we go?" he muttered to the group, looking around. "How do you beat this 'trial' - 'Canyon Crawl', was it? Man, I sure hope another scorpion doesn't show up." |

Dakota was on cloud nine. They had gotten rid of the scorpion and he was still alive! What more could he ask for? That was when his brain finally caught up to what was going on around him. The pixel fella was injured. While the size and shape of the body kept being distorted, Dakota could see the red liquid seeping through the clothing. “Oh gosh. Sit right there and take it easy for a moment. Let’s make sure this didn’t get too deep.” He listed to the man wince trying to soothe himself as he gripped the wound. Dakota was hesitant to touch the man but felt that he needed to help stop the bleeding somehow. Good thing this man’s summoning seemed more than capable of aiding him. She was quick at grabbing clothing and water from their bag.

He knelt down by the man and offered to help support his body so that the man was in a more comfortable position. “Yea, I’m fine thanks to you guys. It looks like it is dead. Its own tail stabbed it.” He looked over the wound and noticed that the blood seemed to have stopped. As the man tried to stand, Dakota hovered nearby ready to try and catch him if he fell.

“You’re right, we need to keep going. We have to reach the top before daybreak and we’re still quite a ways down.” Dakota looked up towards the moon, trying to judge the amount of time they had left based on its position. If he had to guess, it was probably around three in the morning. They only had maybe three more hours before the sun would start to rise. He looked to the fox who was now just rubbing up against his leg. “Hey, you go on up ahead and see if there are any enemies.” The fox nodded before walking up the path, phasing through the rocks and obstacles in its way. Dakota had seen his main skill earlier and knew that this was the perfect situation for it. His eyes started to glow a pale blue and white color. Before he knew it, his senses and the fox’s merged and he was able to see and process what it saw right then and there. So far, no enemies. “It looks clear, let’s go.” He took the lead and started back up the path.

Zhao would gladly take Dakota's help and use his assistance to deal with his wound better, hissing through the pain.
"N-neat ability you got there, anon." he told the shaman, as he saw the wolf go off and do the scouting trip.
"Alright." he replied to him once the spirit came back with the information. "Say... are you Summoner too?" he wondered. His wolf thing seemed eerily similar to his own repertoire, although he couldn't quite identify what kind of creature it was exactly, given how the anonymization effect was screwing with it as well.
Carefully, we started to walk behind Dakota, he and his summon trying to not make too much noise, and to check the surroundings as much as they could just in case any more danger would appear.
"You're just a normal guy like I am, right?" he wondered and asked the person ahead of him. "You're... human, right? A person? Like a real person, not an NPC."
"I'm Z̴̨̟̺͊̓͐ḩ̷̛̙̕ả̴̼͋o̵̖̤͑͜͠͠ ̶̛̺̳̻̆W̷̧̙̋̾ã̴̝͗͝n̴̳̑͛̃g̸̣͙̠͛" he stated. "I don't really entirely understand what has gone on yet, am I stuck in a videogame? Or did the whole world turn into one?"
He winced. "...Am I dreaming?"

“Ahh, I’m not sure truth be told. I really didn’t look too much over my information back there. I was too focused to find something to help in that fight.” He kept walking forward but made sure to glance back now and then to make sure that the guy was still moving. “I guess I should check into that while we have some downtime, huh?” He held his hand up in front of him. “Menu.” He said clearly and firm. All of a sudden several screens appeared before him. Dakota took a moment to read over the screens, as he did so his page drastically changed.

“Ah, no I guess I’m not a summoner but deal with spirits. Well, maybe I am a summoner? I can bring him out. Doesn’t seem like he’s like yours though.” Hisface was scrunched as he tried to understand the Passive of his class. He could force spirits out of this world but not really call any of them but the fox.

The man’s question brought his attention back to the canyon and he swiped the screens away. “Yea, I’m human. I’m from Vegas. What about you?” The path the two were walking on progressively became more narrow. Dakota was worried that his companion would become stuck in his current state. The path was barely wide enough for two. They needed to be careful. One wrong step could send you over the edge. At this point they were halfway up the canyon.

"From the US." Zhao replied, as they continued to make their way through the canyon, and the path having become extremely narrow now. Maybe for someone like Dakota, they could more or less fit, but someone as enormous Zhao had to make some compromises. She turned sideways and opted to crab-walk as he hissed through the pains - the main issue was his torso, his legs were fine. Moving his chest hurt, so did breathing, which came from the effort. But he could walk. His summon had opted for walking behind him and pushing him up.
"Do you know if there's any way to win this thing?" Zhao asked. "Did you get any instructions from the Earth chibi thing? I haven't gotten anything. Is there a point to all of this? I know that we should get stronger, that always seems implied in all games like this, but what would we becoming stronger for? Just survival, is it just that? Or is there some kind of final reward?"
"In a couple of mangas and webcomics, in situations like these, whoever got to the maximum level first or got to the highest floor of the tower or whatever, got to make a wish. Or they'd just become god, or something. I wonder if there's something like this going on in this situation." he continued, the worst of his pains having eased down into just a constant searing sizzle now that his body has self-coagulated for the most part and the blood was hardening.
