When Wes clicked [ ] Yes after the completion of his tutorial, the System transported him to Los Angeles. He had never been, and wouldn’t have known it was LA, except for the friendly notification that appeared before him letting him know he was in the "Safe Zone LA." A safe zone, Wes learned was an area where “Players” were safe from monsters and events, like the lovely “Tutorial” he just experienced.
Everyone here, then, Wes figured, was also a survivor of a Tutorial--they had also experienced their own version of that nightmare. As he took his first steps through the streets, looking for a place to rest, he avoided making eye contact with others. He couldn’t handle seeing the sadness, the anger, the guilt that he felt reflected on the faces of others. He needed a reprieve from the trauma.
As Wes continued down whatever boulevard he was on, he couldn’t help but notice that the city looked fine despite the world seemingly ending. Electricity and water worked, and there was a whole new system for renting a place to live and buying food and other commodities. "Points" were the currency of the new world. Wes had accumulated a few from his "efforts" in the tutorial and was able to find a decent apartment that he could call home for the next month.
Realizing he needed more points to survive, he developed a routine of finding a small group of other Players to travel with via waypoint to hunt low level monsters. It was low risk and even lower reward, but it kept himself and others afloat.
When not forcing himself to risk his life fighting oversized rats and green-humanoid things he learned were called "goblins", Wes spent his time exploring the new LA. He learned from others that the city had been reworked by the System. The buildings weren’t the same, nor were the streets, but they had a similar feel. It was like a new version of LA, an LA 2.0.
Wes’s favorite spot in this new LA was a small pier, the end of which, for whatever reason, bordered the outer limits of the Safe Zone. The wood was worn, with gnarly knots and big, rusted nails, yet it was also firm and sturdy. The boards didn’t creek, and they were free from any signs of real rot. Wes theorized that the System had created a perfectly imperfect spot, a pier that was frozen in time to always have a rustic, seaside aesthetic.
He spent most evenings at this pier, and today he arrived with a book he loaned from another Player. "Mythology: Tales of Gods and Heroes", it was one he had read before, but given the state of the world, he felt it necessary to brush up on his knowledge of gods and monsters. He sat along the edge, his legs dangling over the side of the pier and placed the book beside him. Closing his eyes, he leaned slightly back and angled his nose to the sky.
He listened to the steady rhythmic sloshing of the water. It was always the same peaceful tune. Not too harsh, not too quiet. Like a perfect white noise he’d have had Alexa play for him in a past-life. He inhaled, deeply, taking in the sweet-salty sea breeze. It was brisk and sharp, but not overpowering, and bless the System, there was not even the faintest tinge of fish.
He opened his eyes, gazing up at the setting sky. A gentle breeze rolled across the water, sending the slightest of chill across his body. It was a kind, cool air, that teetered so neatly along the edges of sweater-weather.
Wes smiled to himself. Being here, it was almost like nothing had happened.

[attr="class","jemmareescroll"] Jemma was bored. [break][break] She’d finished her tutorial a while ago. After the revelation that the world they lived in was now some kind of strange game of life and death… there wasn’t much else to process. The world was always being touted as dangerous and unsafe anyway, what was much of the difference now? [break][break] Oh right. Now people had superpowers. And Jemma supposed that it was like the comments section of a youtube video. Give everyone a chance to be unique and special, only the dumb ones were going to make themselves heard and this case, likely get themselves killed. [break][break] Of course, she’d nearly died during her first mission. And perhaps she panicked a little more than she’d like to admit. But she could take care of herself, and her class was pretty cool. That was the difference. Plus, she had Fox. And Fox knew what he was doing because he played video games a ton. So this new game was just like another video game, and he was really good at it. Jemma could be like him. [break][break] She could be good at video games too! Like Tetris. She was great at Tetris. [break][break] But now, with the strange new version of travel across the world, waypoints, instant teleportation…. She could find herself wherever she wanted, and well, now, she found herself in the so-called Safe Zone of Los Angelos. Jemma had never left London except for a few family vacations on cruiseliners, yet she didn’t feel like those counted as visiting new places. [break][break] Somehow, she’d been able to keep her Switch on her since she’d been teleported initially while holding it. And so, she decided that she wanted to play some Tetris to relax and wind down from this new crazy world. [break][break] She went to the Pier because that seemed like a good place to be alone. It had a nice view of ocean waves and a pleasant slight breeze. She could enjoy that. So, Switch in tow, she parked herself a nice spot on a bench, crossed her legs, and started moving around tetrominoes on screen like no tomorrow. The soft clicking of the buttons was barely heard among the crashing of the waves on the shoreline, as well as the noises of seagulls crying. [break][break] Suddenly, Jemma looked up, feeling that she just wasn’t alone. And she was right. She noticed a man sitting on the bench next to her. She inclined her head, watching him for a few moments as he sat and had a book in hand. [break][break] “Whatcha reading?”

With a heavy inhale and a long exhale, he opened his eyes, picked up his book, and rose to his feet. He turned through the pages and waltzed over to one of the nearby benches. Sitting down once more, he flipped through to where he last left off. A chapter on Norse mythology, he found a few paragraphs on trolls. Having heard rumors that there were some in the fields of England, he hoped that there was some information here that might be useful should he find himself face-to-face with one of those oversized humanoids. Known to have lived together in small family units, trolls were typically said to dwell in homes formed from rocks or mountain caves. Antagonistic to humans, Trolls had a reputation for being unhelpful at their best and downright aggressive at their worst.
Although most trolls have been around for centuries, their age has not blessed them with wisdom. Slow and dim-witted beings, these large creatures rely on their incredible durability and herculean strength to survive.
In Scandinavian lore, trolls are terrified of lightning - - -
Wes immediately lost focus when he heard the young woman’s voice, but it was a good second before it registered someone was actually speaking to him. He pulled his nose away from the page and looked beside him. Startled at how close the young blonde woman was, he scooted back in his seat. He spoke slowly, each word much longer than it needed to be "... about trolls". Confusion setting in, he cocked his head slightly and squinted as he gave her a once over. He had a number of questions, such as why was she at "his" pier and why was she talking to him, but most importantly, he wanted to know who she was. She looked familiar, she sounded familiar, but he was certain this was the first time he was ever meeting her. He wracked his brain—he figured he would have remembered her if he had seen her during his time in LA so it must have been sooner. It wasn’t during the Tutorial for sure, so it was even earlier, before all this happened. He sat with his curiosity a beat longer before he resigned the guarded, inquisitive look, and settled for being friendly. "Have any interest?" he gestured to the page, a picture of a gnarly mountain troll sat opposite the paragraphs he had been reading. "I heard they’ve been spotted in some of the zones out there.". [attr="class","jemmareescroll"] "... about trolls". [break] Jemma inclined her head. Perhaps not the answer she expected, but she wasn’t sure what she supposed she had expected him to say. She blinked once, then twice again, and then looked at her handheld game system. [break][break] “I’m playing Tetris.” She said bluntly. As if the non-sequitur was the most casual way to continue the conversation. [break][break] She kicked her legs beneath her, swaying her feet as they just barely reached the ground. The breeze was nice, and it was quite peaceful here like one could forget that the world around them had changed so much in such a short amount of time. [break][break] "Have any interest?" [break] He continued their conversation. Looking back at him, Jemma turned her gaze downwards towards his book, summarily ignoring how the tetrominoes on her screen began to pile up higher and higher. She inclined her head inquisitively but didn’t necessarily answer his question. [break][break] “Did you fight a troll in your tutorial?” She asked, then looking to the man himself. If he was here, it meant that he had survived a tutorial. Her gaze turned away from him for a moment. "I fought robots in mine."[break][break] He had to have some strength or brains to him, otherwise he would be dead. [break]

Hearing her speak again, he knew she sounded familiar, but he pushed the thought aside. As she asked about the tutorial and made reference to her own, a wave of sadness washed over him. His shoulders grew heavy, his gaze grew soft, and his voice much gentler than before.
"No, no trolls for me. You had robots? That must have been scary" he did his best to smile while he spoke, but anyone discerning enough would spot how the expression didn't touch his eyes--how the smile failed to overtake the sadness. Sadness not for him, at least not entirely, but more so for the young woman before him. She was far too young, Wes thought, to have had to endure the tutorial. He thought his had been tragic enough, but his mind raced now imagining how much worse it could have been and how much worse it probably had been for others.
He watched the little tetris blocks--he didn't know the word for them--stack up on her screen. He remembered reading recently that tetris was a great way for combatting PTSD. He was glad she was playing.
He felt a pull to ask the girl more about her experience. Wes wanted to provide some kind of comforting shoulder to cry on, or to help guide her through dealing with whatever horror she had faced, but he couldn't. He just didn't have it in him. And not that he had any credentials in that regard anyway; he just felt an obligation to help.
Wes could barely mange his own feelings right now. He didn't have the bandwidth to take on someone else's. Ashamed he wasn't strong enough to help carry whatever burden she might have, he pivoted the conversation.
Pointing at her screen, he teased, "looks like you might lose if you don't match some rows."

[attr="class","jemmareescroll"] "No, no trolls for me. You had robots? That must have been scary" [break] Jemma inclined her head once more. Her gaze turned away however, as she didn’t really know what she should have said. The man was trying to be comforting, but failing quite a lot on such an aspect. He was nervous for some reason, Jemma assumed, which didn’t make much sense. She didn’t think she was that scary. She supposed it was like stage fright, and well, she had had stage fright before. She thought that was pretty scary. [break][break] “Yeah, it was.” She said somewhat flatly. [break][break] It had been. [break][break] Nearly dying and all that. [break][break] "looks like you might lose if you don't match some rows." [break] “Hm.” Jemma said, looking down at her switch in her hands. She paused again, seeing how the screen flashed red, signaling that quite a few blocks had already stacked up in the center, having done so as the girl had paid more attention to the man beside her rather than her game. [break][break] She tried moving one block over, but by the time she tried it was already too late. She frowned a little, clicked both triggers and just ended the game by stacking blocks on top of each other herself. [break][break] The screen flashed game over. [break][break] Before starting a new one, Jemma looked over to the man again. [break][break] “It’s alright, I’ve lost games before.” She said to him, then paused. “I wonder what happens when you lose this game.” [break][break] This game. Not Tetris. The game that Earth-chan had suddenly all put them in. The system, the game. [break][break] “I guess you die, right.” [break]
