Zed Allaire was not born out of love.
[break][break]
He was born out of necessity. He was born because Thomas Allaire needed an heir. So Thomas married a woman with money that needed more.
[break][break]
They had a son. They had Zed.
[break][break]
Zed was not raised to be loved, with love. He was raised to be successful, perfect, to meet expectation, and to be what his father needed. His mother only desired to breeze with the rest of her socialites, to show off her diamond jewelry and designer bags. She was happy just show off her child when he performed at his piano recitals, when he won his elementary spelling bee, when he smiled and called her mother because he was so mature for his age.
[break][break]
And he did all that and more, because that was the expectation.
[break][break]
They wanted the perfect son, so he would be it.
[break][break]
From a young age, there was no room for failure.
[break][break]
In his youngest years, he was raised by a caretaker. Neither parent had time or interest in a baby.
[break][break]
When he started to interact with other children, there was a noticeable coldness to him. He didn’t smile. He didn’t play pretend. Today, he recalls one incident, when one of his classmates had fallen and scraped a knee, crying, he only thought about how much of an annoyance the wails of a hurt child could be.
[break][break]
Eventually, word came to his Father of how strange Zed was compared to his peers. This would not do, because successful people did not ostracize themselves from the rest of their peers. They led them, they made others like them, and want to be like them.
[break][break]
This was the type of person Zed needed to be, so he would become it.
[break][break]
So he learned how to act. Pretend smiles, fake laughter. Interest and concern for his fellow peers were other expectations to uphold. By high school, he had adapted well. He had friends, even a girlfriend, but yet no one could say they were ‘close’ to him. In short, he did it all because he had to.
[break][break]
And his parents were pleased with him. His father could say he was proud of him.
[break][break]
Yet has he matured, that coldness never faded. It only grew.
[break][break]
There was an empty feeling inside him that he did not understand. So like all things, (displeasure, hopelessness, lacking), he hid it away. Buried it deep down inside until it all but consumed him.
[break][break]
He still smiled on the outside though.
[break][break]
Then came university. He saw everyone there with their dreams and hopes for their future careers. His path already lay before him. Obtain his degree, take over the family business, and follow in his father’s footsteps. There was no room for dreams or desire.
[break][break]
Somewhere he fell into a trap. That as long as he pretended to be good, then others would be good toward him. It made sense. It was an equivalent exchange of ideals.
[break][break]
He lived to please others. To please his parents, to meet expectations.
[break][break]
He didn’t know how to live for himself.
[break][break]
And then one day, he met someone.
[break][break]
And perhaps that is when his life began.
[break][break]
Because when he met him, there was something beyond fake smiles and pretend friendship. There was something else besides set expectations and regalia. There was a genuine kindness and interest that Zed did not understand.
[break][break]
So he had to know about this.
[break][break]
How could someone be happy, without being told to laugh? How could someone be genuine, honest with nothing to hide? How could show interest in him for him and not money, his status, his family, or his wealth? It fascinated him, intrigued him. He was fixated.
[break][break]
Perhaps even obsessed.
[break][break]
So, they became ‘friends.’
