Life had been simpler before the light came. Not good but simpler. It was all training, all learning and all guarding the very thing that lay before them. Of course there was also trying to give small amounts of aid towards their sister. A stab of guilt shot through Kuro's gut the same way it always did when they thought of their sister. Shiro hadn't deserved everything that had happened to her, the curse was a self-fulfilling prophecy and for the most part Shiro simply watched as it all happened. The stab became harsher and they closed their eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath to calm the tempest of emotions within them. Things would get better though. Kuro would make sure they would.

Their parents were getting ready to pass on the keeper's title to Kuro and that meant they would have more power to actually help. That change would start now, a path walking forwards with both of them guarding the blade, a curse broken through love. Their eyes opened, taking in the small, dark room that sat at the center of the Miyashita family shrine. Thin, tall candles in sets of nine made of red wax sat on either side, though their light was feeble and barely illuminated the room. Before Kuro, mounted on the wall, was the object that the Miyashita family had sworn an ancestral duty to protect; The Great Fox-Slaying Blade. A massive sword carved out of polished stone, just over ten feet long. It had an old but well cared for wooden scabbard and was festooned with ofuda and other talismans and bells to ward away evil.

Kuro spent a moment collecting themselves before bowing forwards, forehead against their hands and to the ground to offer proper respect. Shiro would hopefully be here soon and they could talk all of this through, they could banish the darkness that had lurked in their family for too long. Against tradition and family it was always too hard to try and speak up before but that was just an excuse and Kuro knew it, they had failed their sister, let this fester and the rot consume almost everything. If Shiro refused then Kuro wouldn't blame her, it would be understandable, though it would hurt... Hopefully she would be here...

So they waited, sitting there wearing the traditional outfit to watch over a cursed blade. A pair of red hakama, belted with a braided cord of golden rope, and a black kosode to mark them out from a true Miko, there was no purity here after all, only a duty to withstand a curse. Black and red ribbons were threaded through Kuro's hair and a ceremonial katana sat on the ground before them, ready to be used in a purification ceremony, one that Kuro was going to invite Shiro to perform with them.
