[break][break] There were plenty of missions to be taken. [break][break] Adam specifically was looking for one that could be taken solo, of course, and could be somewhat of a challenge but was easy enough that he could still do it. He was still lowlevel after all and this concept of missions and grinding, though new to him, was something he understood well. Do jobs, get money. Except, in this case, it was do jobs that may or may not be life-threatening and gain experience to get stronger. That was his end goal here. Become stronger. [break][break] He’d found himself on the edges of what remained of civilized society in North America. Somehow, his home city of Los Angeles had been spared the destruction and reconstruction that so many other areas of the globe had suffered. Still, naught the same could be said of this ‘Hollow Hills’ zone, formerly a mountainous region now turned overgrown and Hollow on the inside. It was an area unexplored and labeled as ‘medium risk,’ which meant that it could be something he could take on. [break][break] Take up a mission, explore the area, and potentially kill some low-level to equivalent monsters for experience… [break][break] Aha! There was one. The world had seemingly become a dangerous place, and she wanted to make sure she- and her family- would be safe.[break][break] She had heard about a mission board, and while she had explored a few areas on her own already, this seemed like a good way to really get an idea of how life worked now. Plus it meant she would likely be helping someone else in the process, right? So it was just a win-win as far as she was concerned.[break][break] It seemed like she wasn't the only one who was interested in the missions either. There were a handful of other individuals who were looking things over. Maybe there was someone who she could join on their mission? It would definitely make things easier, and it would be more fun than being alone.[break][break] Her gaze scanned across the few individuals looking over the mission board, and eventually landed on one in particular. He seemed to be intently searching through the options, and gave off the vibe that he was taking this seriously. He stood away from everyone else, giving the impression that he probably wanted to be alone... but where was the fun in that? As far as she was concerned, he looked like he could use some company.[break][break] And so Elisande made her way over to him, walking right up as if she had known him her whole life despite never speaking to him even once before now. Suddenly, there was a person on his shoulder. He flinched, initially surprised to find that it was a girl who somehow acted like she apparently knew him or was just so casual with him, like they were the best of friends.

Was she mistaking him for somebody? No way, if she was that close to him already taking. He couldn’t really say much because he didn’t have the time.

She already pushed ‘accept’ on his viewing screen and then quickly hit her own.

“Hey!” He exclaimed, but before he had the chance to say anything else, a familiar and almost sickening whirl of pixels and code engulfed them both.

They both suddenly found themselves in a middle of a forest, silent save for the random birds' calls or the sound of buzzing and rustling of the wind in the trees. It was sunny, but sunlight only barely peaked through the canopy of leaves above them. And just beside them, a rocky outcrop of uneven stones and piled high dirt signaled the beginning of a mountainside.

“The hell?” Adam demanded, looking at the girl as his brow furrowed. He only barely caught that her name was 'Elisande' or something before they had been whisked away. He’d known exactly what she had done, and he understood that he was suddenly taking this mission with her. But none of it was anything that he liked.

“Why the hell did you do that?” He further questioned, crossing his arms in front of him, defensive.

The occasional bird call breaking the silence only helped Elisande really immerse herself in the situation. It was calm, peaceful. For a moment, she could have completely forgotten the circumstances that led her to be here. At least, until a seemingly very irritated gentleman began to question her.[break][break]
The scolding, however, only elicited a series of giggles from Elisande. "Isn't it a bit impolite to let a lady introduce herself and not introduce yourself in return?" Her question was followed by a smile and a wink. "You looked like you could use some company~"[break][break]
Unlike him with his irritable tone and crossed arms, everything about Elisande was warm, playful and welcoming. From her way of speaking to the way she was carrying herself, there was no indication of ill will or malice. Or at least, she didn't think anyone could interpret it that way. Yet she knew there were plenty of mistrustful individuals out there, and she had been told on a few occasions that she was "fake" despite only ever being genuine with people. Maybe this individual would think the same?[break][break]

[break][break] "Isn't it a bit impolite….” [break] He didn’t care for introductions or giving her his name because once this interaction was over, he did not care ever to meet her again. So he didn’t proceed with a name because that was pointless. [break][break] And ‘use some company’? The hell? Just why is it that he suddenly happened upon a stranger that decided that his business was her business? [break][break] "Besides, it's dangerous out here, right?" [break] Yes, it was. At least the warning for this area had called it a medium risk place. Adam was only barely sure what that meant, but it wasn’t high, so that was a lot better, at least in his eyes. [break][break] She said she was going to protect him. He looked her up and down. Pretty in pink, warm smile, sunny disposition. [break][break] Yeah, she was going to be doing plenty of protecting. [break][break] “Protect yourself.” He said, uncrossing his arms, walking past her, and summarily ignoring her giggles, warm smiles, and any attempts to be friendly with him. She didn’t want to be a damsel in distress. Good, then she wouldn’t be getting in the way. The sounds of branches crackled underneath his feet as he brushed past some branches and other greenery. [break][break] He was walking along the side of the mountain in search of signs of an opening or cave. If the girl had taken enough time to read the mission, she would know they needed to get inside to explore the hollow caverns. Elisande simply offered him a shrug in return. "I feel like I can do both~" She smiled and laughed again. "Not that you need it, mister big, strong man." The tone of her voice was playful rather than antagonistic, but she wouldn't have been surprised if he took it more as a taunt than anything else based on his reactions so far.[break][break]
She was quick to follow him as he took off, matching his pace and trying to stay right behind him. As they walked she was keeping her eyes peeled for anything that resembled an entrance to the cavern systems, but she kept a relaxed attitude the whole time. It would be easy for someone to think she wasn't taking this seriously, even though that couldn't be farther from the truth. Still no sign of an entrance. Elisande figured that they probably had to climb the mountainside a bit before they found their destination. Adam was doing his best to try and not immediately explode in the vicinity of the pinkette, because throwing a temper tantrum was not productive or something like that.

Now she was taunting him, even better. Except she likely saw it as some kind of fun little joke. He was neither exceedingly big nor tall, and he certainly didn’t enjoy being called some kind of meathead.

His glancing glare was the perfect and only subtle hint of saying ‘whatever’ without actually saying the word.

They walked together. At least she had the mind to do something useful, but it hardly seemed like she was actually doing anything at all. But she just kept talking like she didn’t know how to be quiet. Adam still stayed silent, trying not to give her more fuel to work with.

But of course, when she eventually threatened to call him sort of pet name, the brunette paused.

“Adam.” He said simply, before continuing his trek.

And as soon as he was done with his curt interaction, the pair just happened upon a partcularly rocky area on the side of the mountain. Tall, white silver rocks weathered down by what looked like years of erosion surrounded a small square opening lined with wooden beams. Upon looking inside, the pair would a winding tunnel that had typical mining lanterns lining down the cave.

Before heading down the cave, Adam reached out with his hand. A blur of pixels and electrical fire burst forth and suddenly, he was holding a briefcase. When he opened it, he found a simple short sword and sheath, which he hung around his back, and not one, but actually two sticks of dynamite….

He placed both sticks in his back pocket and let the briefcase fall from his hands, it faded once again into a blur of pixels and electric blue flame.

He then went down the tunnel without waiting for Elisande.

As soon as the cavern entrance appeared Elisande turned all of her attention from teasing and taunting Adam to the mission at hand. [break] Sure enough, the celestial dolphin appeared next to her in a flash of light. "Hi, Delphi~" Happy dolphin noises followed, then a giggle from Elisande. No matter how many times she summoned Delphi, she couldn't contain the pure joy it brought her. "Keep an eye out for danger, okay?"[break][break] At her instruction Delphi began swimming circles in the air around her. She then made her way into the cave as well, taking care to increase her pace so she could catch up to Adam. "Cool briefcase." All the while she was looking around at the cave walls, keeping an eye out for potential threats or diverging paths. So far it seemed to be a straight shot, but she had a feeling that wouldn't last long. His silence was enough of an answer to how much he disliked her being there. But he could work with people he disliked. That was part of doing any job, even quests given by the system. [break] [break] He watched as the girl summoned…. A dolphin made of stars? He raised an eyebrow, but otherwise didn’t react. Somehow it felt like it fit her, being cute and pretty, and he wasn’t that surprised. Her giggles were a bit much, but he still didn’t say anything since he didn’t have much of anything to say. [break] [break] And so, they continued down the path. It was a relatively eventless journey, the lights on the side of the mine provided little visibility, but enough to keep the trek manageable. The air felt cooler in the tunnel, damp and a bit heavy. Adam supposed that the girl shouldn’t be claustrophobic if they were going down this deep. He didn’t have any problems with it, but the moment she would start complaining… [break] [break] But suddenly, Adam stopped. Below them, the ground shook a little, rocks and loose dirt vibrating. “Stop.” Adam said, holding out his hand and preventing the girl from moving forward if she decided to listen to him. Adam took out his warning bell. It wasn’t ringing… But if it wasn’t ringing then why was the ground shaking? [break] [break] And suddenly out from a wall, a mole like CREATURE burst outward, causing dirt and rocks to spew outward. The creature was about the size of a large dog, had giant claws and blue and black fur. And most noticeably, it had a rather big smile on its face. [break] [break] “Burrr!” The creature said waving its arms around, almost like it was dancing. [break] [break] Immediately Adam pulled out his Shortsword, holding it in a defensive position. What the hell was that thing? He stayed tense, watching it as it waddled around sniffing the nearby rocks and walls. It even saw Elisande’s dolphin and made some indiscernible sounds of burr-burr, seemingly finding the dolphin of light a fascinating thing. Adam had yet to but his sword down, he didn’t trust it all. [break] [break] Even if it was just a little cute. That being said, she was quietly humming to herself more or less the entire walk. It was an attempt at entertaining herself since Adam seemed to want nothing to do with her. Which was fine by her, because she was confident she could break through that soon enough.[break][break]
As she walked Delphi swam circles through the air around her, twisting and twirling gracefully. Every once in a while the celestial dolphin would swim up towards Adam, circle around him once, then return back to Elisande. Elisande herself would keep a decent distance from Adam, but she made sure she was close enough to not get separated and still be able to talk to him without having to yell.[break][break]

She saw no reason not to listen after seeing him do so. She looked over towards him, then let her gaze follow his own. As the creature popped up out of the ground and she saw him grab his sword Elisande just sighed and shook her head. Almost immediately afterwards a smile crossed her face. "Awwww~ it's so cute! Hey little guy~"[break][break]
Even so, she thought back to her tutorial. The creatures that had emerged from the sands were cute in their own right... before they revealed just how deadly they could be. With a quick nod of her head she sent Delphi forward, the dolphin slowly swimming right up to the creature. This way they could gauge its reaction and see whether or not it was hostile. [break][break] Whether it was cute or not, it didn’t say anything about how deadly it could be. In Adam’s experience in this new sort of fucked up system, yes, it could be very deadly. [break][break] Adam kept his sword up, not wanting to take any chances. As the creature waddled around, it seemed to adore the shining dolphin that Elisande had summoned and allowed to get somehow close to it. The mole-like creature continued to make some ”Burr! Burr!” noises to the point it was more annoying than endearing. [break][break] Finally, he was done with it after watching it continue to make a fool of itself for the next few moments. Adam sheathed his sword and simply walked past it, deeming it not worth his time. As Adam walked past it, the creature made energetic “Burr!”’s and quickly followed after Adam, waving its giant claws back and forth. [break][break] It indeed was fairly harmless. [break][break] Adam continued down the path until he saw light near the end. He slowed a bit, but soon the tunnel came to a large opening. What was on the other side was actually a quite AMAZING site. It was the inside of the mountain… but it was entirely hollowed out with strange, unique rock formations carved into the stone. Above, strange winged creatures flew in the giant open-air cavern. Adam took note, just in case any of them were hostile as well. He then noticed that the mole creature hadn’t left his side during his entire trek into the cavern. Frowning, he really wanted to just stomp down and squish the thing in order to end its incessant Burrs. Elisande would give him an almost offended look in response to this, but she wouldn't say anything. After all, he was entitled to his clearly incorrect opinion. Her opinion on the matter was only solidified by the way the little creature interacted with Delphi. Even so, she wouldn't approach it. If this thing did turn out to be a dangerous murder mole it wouldn't be the first time something diabolically adorable popped up out of the ground, appear to be cute and harmless, then attempt to kill her. It would be the second time. Which wasn't a lot, but it would be weird for it to happen twice already.[break][break]
Fortunately that didn't seem to be the case as Adam simply walked past the creature and no harm came from it. In fact, Elisande only started to enjoy this creature's presence more afterwards. It took all of her willpower to not burst out laughing at the way it followed Adam around and pestered him. "See, even this little guy thinks you could use some company. I knew I was onto something~"[break][break]
It didn't take long for her to once again go quiet though. The sight of the inside of this cave system had her awestruck from the moment it fully came into view. It was like an entirely different world down here. "Wow..." It was all she could get out while she was taking it all in. Only after she had spent a significant period of time being captivated by the scenery did a realization set in.[break][break]
"Soooooo..." She had been sneaking glances over at Adam every once in a while to see if something as amazing as this could at least draw out some emotion other than angst and grumpiness, but her attention now fully fell on him. "When it said to explore the area and retrieve any valuable materials, you don't think it meant to explore the whole area and bring back all valuable materials, right?" She laughed nervously. "Because if so, we'll be here a while." Adam could fairly well not show any emotion in regards to what he saw inside the mountain’s vast environment because mostly he didn’t really care. All he saw was a large hollow cavern that needed to quote ‘be explored’ for any ‘rare materials.’ What the hell did that even mean?

And why the hell wouldn’t that mole thing leave him alone? It waddled circles around him, and perhaps one could legitimately see steam emanating from Adam’s temple as he rested his hand on his forehead. He was about to get a migraine from this thing…

Just as he was able to continue walking, ignore it, and hopefully leave it fucking behind, the girl spoke up again. She had a point, the area was huge and how were either of them supposed to be able to tell was what valuable? It didn’t seem like the mission had a very good description, to say the least. And whose fault was that they were stuck taking it?

Instead of giving a constructive answer, Adam glared back. “Well I dunno, how about we ask our new friend over here?”

He looked immediately downward at the mole thing, which happily burred with another wave of its giant claws. Almost as if it had been listening in on their conversation, Adam kept his hand on his temple, face palming at the opportune moment. And then their little mole friend waved both its hands up high, jumping a little as its short legs could allow it, and then walked a little away, stopping to turn back and look at the pair and the dolphin every now and again.

Adam crossed his arms once more, critically incredulous at the sudden intelligence of the being.

Elisande looked over to see the creature still hadn't left, which she honestly found extremely humorous. Maybe it was getting the same vibe that she had? To her, Adam just seemed like a grumpy, lonely person who needed a friend. And while she was sure her antics didn't necessarily make him all that keen on being her friend, she was still going to try to win him over.[break][break]
She was almost saddened for a moment as the creature started to leave. But from the wave of its claws with its adorable little jump to the way it kept looking back at them, it was clear that it wanted them to follow it. Was it smarter than she initially thought? And he supposed that they didn’t have any other options besides simply wandering around the entire hollow mountain cavern on the search for ‘rare materials’ that neither of them could have a mind in identifying. [break][break] He didn’t like their odds at the comment she came out with. But he only narrowed his eyes and gave a small grunt of disapproval as if this was a stupid idea. Following some mole creature to their doom? They might as well be. [break][break] The mole creature waved again, ”Burr!” As if to say ‘come on!’ [break][break] “Fine.” Adam said, walking towards the creature. [break][break] Adam looked down, his entire being on edge as if he could murder the thing with a dark eyed stare. “Go.” [break][break] Unperturbed by Adam’s murderous look, the little mole creature went ahead into a thicker part of the woods, crunching branches underneath its waddling feet. Adam followed, mostly because he knew that they didn’t have much of any other choice. [break][break] Despite being inside a cavern, the area's greenery was lush and growing, even perhaps overgrowing. And more than a few times, Adam had to hack away at some branches in the way with his sword. [break][break] That was until the group came to a small stream. Water trickled down levels of rocks and stone, carving out a waterway. And suddenly, the group would hear the sounds of loud commotion of some type, followed by a sudden ”Roaaar!” that thundered though the air. [break][break] “Burr!!” The little mole suddenly panicked, waving its claws wildly in the air. Adam had already tensed at the roaring, readying himself for an attack at any moment. But suddenly, their little mole guide jumped away, heading upstream and climbing up some stones, nearly getting out of site of the two humans. [break][break] Adam’s gaze hardened, but he only turned to Elisande once. They already decided to come this far, following the thing, they might as well keep going…right into danger. [break][break] He took off after the small mole, climbing up the stones to a higher tier of the stream. Once reaching their higher level, he saw a strange scene before him. [break][break] There were a pair of two large creatures, about the size of bears. One of them looked quite like a bear but with frazzled hair and strange armor-like pads on its shoulders. It was on its hind legs, growling and bearing its fangs. [break][break] Across from it was another mole like creature, appearing actually much like the smaller one that the pair had been following, but much bigger, with its metal claws twice the size of its smaller counterparts. Red streaks of fur were tinted darker, as if it was already hurt… [break][break] “Burr!” The baby mole cried, running towards the bigger one, splashing up water as it ran, but a violent growl sounded from the creature, as if it was telling the smaller one to stay away. [break][break] Adam stayed tense during the exchange. They now had potentially two giant and obviously deadly creatures ready to attack, so he needed to be ready to attack too. “So,” his grip on his short sword tensed, “what do you want to do now?” He glanced toward Elisande, gritting his teeth.
