“Right.” Ygdra nodded at the passerby.

“No, thank you and please enjoy the rest of your day. Apologies for the disturbance.” He gave the stranger a smile as they slowly, painfully faded into the stillness of twilight. The day was very near its end and so was his patience. The doctor was well known for recalling minute details from very long ago but it seemed that things had changed quite a bit even before his long absence.[break][break]

Things did not change very often in the countryside of the UK. His family was very wealthy and renowned for their ancestry as the house that stood on their land was quite old and the House of Elder was as sturdy as tradition itself. According to the recounts of his father, there had been much ado when he proposed to his mother and the entire family had opposed the idea of having a foreigner as the Head of the Elder House. Foolish as he was, he gave up everything, even his Japanese residency to stay with the family, although it had little to no effect considering his job required him to travel all around the globe, leaving his wife to take care of the family affairs. [break][break]

Not that it bothered him at all. Ygdra found solace in the books that he sent.[break][break]

But he wasn’t just traveling back to his birthplace to reminisce about old times or recover some books his father had given him. Soon after he had graduated, Ygdra has spent some of his well-earned funds into infrastructure from his home and some very valuable equipment was hidden beneath his family’s private ground. Obviously no one in his family was any of the wiser to his activities. His private lab was beneath a beautiful labyrinth he had constructed as a sort of prank to his family and he had situated his room right in the middle of this stone passage. His relatives may have been somewhat intelligent but none of them were half as interested in his activities as they were with keeping the family name alive. This was also the very reason why he bore his mother’s family name rather than his father’s Japanese name. [break][break]

Ygdra sighed once more. The last vestiges of sunlight had already gone and soon enough, Ygdra had found himself in his element. But it would take him a while before he could finally find the road that led to his destination. He could make out the details of the mansion where his tiny feet used to run across, where his countless nannies fed him and bathed him.[break][break]

The House of Elder was truly a mansion forgotten in time. It was a very old house, bearing features such as teep, multi-faceted Mansard roof, whereas the walls had wooden planks and rather ornate decorations that made the house quite elegant but rather impractical. The house itself was three stories large and had a number of rooms that were unused, two towers on the east and west wings, as well as a large foyer to welcome any guest.[break][break]

The good news was that none of the lights had been lit up for years. Although none of the rumors he had heard aligned with each other, the common factor between all of them was that something had happened to the Elder family. Apart from the equipment, this was also something he needed to uncover, if only to satisfy his curiosity. Was it here that his parents also met their demise? It seemed so because the grounds seemed like they had been unattended for centuries. Weeds had grown out of control, sprouting from the ground like the claws of a wild beast. In fact, nature had seemingly overrun the entire mansion, with vines hugging the house as if claiming it for itself. But other than dust and cobwebs, the house hadn’t been destroyed and was completely intact.

Ygdra hopped to a brisk walk and opened the gates with an ear-screeching sound, rust grating against rust. [break][break]

“~I’m hoooomeeeee!” [break][break]

His voice echoed in the stillness of the night.

Haunted House anyone?

The trip to the basement was a quick one since he expected some sort of trouble along the way, and the house was eerily quiet. If anything had taken residence in his house during the family’s absence, his entry and cacophony would have drawn them towards his location. But no matter where he shone the flashlight, there was no presence of sentient lifeforms. Or at the very least, they hadn’t made themselves known to him, the intruder. [break][break]

So he had walked ever so casually past the foyer and down the stairs to the first level and he opened the door to the room where the switch for the main generator was located. The door opened with a loud creak before he had slammed it against the wall. The darkness seemed to creep in closer and closer, allowing him only to see what was within the cone shaped light of the flashlight.[break][break]

“Nothing to see but darkness…” He announced, shifting his head left and right hoping to finally see something come at him. But when nothing did, he sighed. “Nothing at all, huh…?”

He slouched towards the switch, opened the casing and turned the level up with a little more effort than necessary. He expected to be greeted by blinding lights but that also was a disappointment. “That was rather anticlimactic. Guess no one paid the electricity bill.” [break][break]

Ygdra gave up on the switch after a few attempts and exited the room. Just then, he flashed the light towards the winding stairs that led below to the further levels of the basement but it seemed as if the darkness consumed the light, preventing Ygdra from seeing anything further than a few more meters. It was so very tempting to just jump below but he had a goal in mind. “Let’s leave suicidal impulses for when we can afford them…” [break][break]

He went back outside and round the mansion, for his room was at the furthest end of the grounds, where had built his labyrinth enclose room.

Ygdra opened the door to the best years of his life with much anticipation. [break][break]

He expected to be greeted by some monstrous anomaly that had somehow made its way into his room and found his laboratory, mutated and evolved with the system, then attacked him, ending his life in some gruesome manner. But alas, he had to be so lucky and unbelievably boring that his room, just like everything else, to be in tip top shape. His attempt to shed light into the situation, as well as the room, but it seemed that darkness wanted to remain his constant companion, so Ygdra simply turned on the flashlight and continued forth down memory lane. [break][break]

Ygdra’s childhood room had not changed at all since he had left for university. He kept it relatively simple and clean, just like his dorm room but unlike his university days, he had lined the entire room with books after books after books. All about genetic modification down to mythology, folklore and fairy tales. He often liked to cross between fiction and reality, and alternating between the two gave him such a rush of emotions, but he mostly related to the villains within the story, and the foil they had with the main characters. Perhaps that is what he needed in his life, someone to be the foil to what most would consider villainous plans. [break][break]

He passed through shelves of books, running his flashlight across his prized collection until he found the hardcover version of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and took it out of its place. The wiring noise of cogs and wheels scratching each other told him that, for some things, electricity actually worked. Ygdra turned the flashlight to where the sounds were the loudest and found a whole opening up, leading to his underground, yet secret laboratory. [break][break]
“How nostalgic!” Ygdra clapped his hands in glee. “~Down the rabbit hole we go!”
