Born as Esfir Margarita Estrada Levin in sunny Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of a nurse and a mechanic. Her youth was peaceful, even if she hadn't grown up in the nicest of neighborhoods. Young Esther didn’t begin her life with criminal ambitions, in fact, her dream was far more innocent: She wanted to be a ballerina.

Taking ballet early, her rise was nothing short of meteoric. Having her talent realized, she had been offered a scholarship into a prestigious studio far out of her parents' ballet budget. When she wasn't perusing a more typical education or dancing, she was spending a great deal of time at her father's garage. She inadvertently rubbed elbows with much of Brooklyn's underworld. Making easy enough friends, she made a serious effort to go against her father's warnings. If their money was good enough for father to take and even borrow, why was their company out of the question for her?

Esther’s friendship with hoodlums flourished, as did her prospects in ballet. She had taken to the stage multiple times, it had become a third or so home for her. Yet, she had been far from being a star, until she had been granted the role of Princess Florine in a production of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty. The Blue Bird wasn't happy with this arrangement, the two had undergone many arguments during rehearsals. During the night of the show, after many successful practice runs, her partner dropped her. Suffering the crowd’s raucous laughter, and the physical pain of her bruised side, she–on stage–expelled a curse-filled rant and proceeded to attack the Blue Bird. After far too long, she was successfully pried off by two of her fellow ballerinas. Her career in dance seemed to fizzle out afterwards; with no productions wanting to hire such a problem dancer.

With an assault charge under her belt, she spent much of the next few years working at her father's garage. Blacklisted from the ballet, she leaned more into conversing and befriending the various crooks that did business with her father. Friendships and romantic relationships begot requested favors; one in particular she was able to handle very well. Some jewelry had proven difficult to get rid of, but Esther had gained some other friends who were always in the market for gold and gems (no matter where they came from).

Her connections had opened the doors towards some of the most hideous of opportunities. Her ability to unload jewels and jewelry quickly had led to her creating a network of theft through Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. Initially, her reign of terror was restricted to her particular tri-state area; time and knowledge allowed her network to expand across the East Coast, and into theft of many variables other than jewels. Excess money allowed her further expansion into the time-honored career path of loan sharking, protection racketeering and other means of extorting money from her community.

While organized crime had proven itself as a way to line her pockets, it wasn’t all she wanted out of life. Money couldn’t buy happiness, although it did give her less to be unhappy about. After a great deal of time cleaning up her money, she put forth her illicit funds towards legitimizing herself. Partially achieving her dream, she set about opening her own ballet studio, alongside her father's garage, but it wasn’t long until her legitimate business met with her more illicit work.

Stuck in a federal penitentiary for a minimum of 25 years, Esther was at the end of her ropes.
