Motor City moved quickly, and this den had gained a lot of glamor since Ume's last visit. Ole bronze arm needed her help once more; Ume was relieved to see her drinking and smoking with her cat. Ordering a Scotch on the rocks, she sat at the bar next to her confidant, looking to get some information on her next mission. [break][break] Being the animal lover she was, she put Ume on the path towards the case of a fantastic creature: a bat, one that could “produce ” lithium. Even in this high tech portion of the world, the manilla envelope still got some serious mileage. Inside of the envelope was a tablet, one on a strict timer. Quick as she could, she pulled the critical pieces of information: the address that held the bats, where to take them, and which streets to avoid. Making her short processing window, she, Ume just narrowly avoided her warnings before the tablet sparked and went blank. Nodding, Ume ordered another Scotch on the rocks for the road. [break][break] Outside, she took a long look around. Her time in Motor City had been enlightening; she had come to grips with it, and all of its odd inconsistencies. Thinking back to the burnt tablet, she set her mind on the apartment, and its ludicrously high floorage. These streets bred a certain cruelty, and even the act of asking for directions was met with a slew of rude words and impractically incorrect directions, mostly involving body parts. Patience carried her through the streets until she was finally clued into the fact that she had been wandering in the opposite direction. [break][break] Doubling back, she discovered her target: a large, condemned building, plastered with warnings. Adjusting her facemask, she took a deep breath, prepared to make the plunge.

Smog had made even the brightest hours of the day indecipherable in this part of Motor City. Inside, despite the many torn walls open to the outside world, the darkness was impenetrable. Feeling her way around wasn’t getting her very far, for the substances that lined the walls were hauntingly mysterious, and she couldn’t rely on the sounds to guide her–they mostly got obscured by the roar of the racers outside. She had two choices: she could attempt to find a lightswitch, or she could use terrain data.

Not wanting to even risk touching the walls she searched through her data in the pitch of darkness. She hoped to slot in her desert terrain, the unrelenting, cruel sun straight from Lawrence of Arabia was perfect for these cramped halls. Her luck was far from being on her side. Clicking in, she was greeted by nothing but the howl of wind, and the bombarding beratement of rain. Not entirely defeated, she attempted to time her movements with the flashes of lightning that came with her storm.

The wind was knocked out of her upon the first flash of lightning. Hidden in the dark was no bat, but a lanky figure dressed as one. In that brief second offered by the flash of lightning, Ume caught the figure’s beady, bloodshot eye staring directly into the part of her spirit that made her her. Her blood running cold, caused her to pivot on her heel and begin running in the now slippery halls. Whatever shriek the building’s inhabitant made was hardly a bat-like sound, but something designed from the ground up to be disturbing.

Together, Ume and the batman hid together under the stairwell. Large thumping steps echoed through the increasingly dark building. Above them, a droning hum that could overpower the racing of the city hovered above them. One red light broke through the darkness, zipping around–feeling. Finding common ground, Ume and the batman silently formulated a plan. If either of them was going to make it out of here alive, they were going to have put aside their differences as strike as one.

Nodding, the batman got into position. Ume prepared herself, once again slotting the raining terrain data into the slot. Rain pouding once more, the android went into a frenzy. Shooting off in every direction, it wildly attempted to eliminate the two intruders that sought to disrupt whatever it was it was up to. Poking out for a moment, Ume shot the android with an empowered blast from her viewfinder. While it didn’t destroy it, the strike left it vulnerable for a brief moment. The batman used this moment to execute a complicated judo maneuver to toss the android out of a high gated window, all the way to the ground

Relieved, the batman ominously threw a wing over his face and began to walk off, heading upstairs. Ume, confused simply stared. Stopping, the batman gestured for her to come with him. In silence the two continued up the stairs further and further. More androids blocked their way, as well as entire android wars. At the very top, after what appeared to be a day’s journey, they had made it to the penthouse. In the flashes of lighting, Ume caught a glimpse of the mysterious bat.

Flying quietly up the top, she inelegantly whipped her hand out, violently grabbing the bat by its tiny little legs. It screeched in her hands, its cyborg screeching enough to cause her physical anguish. Slapping the quest's collar around the little blight's throat, she finally subdued it, ridding herself of that one problem. A long journey still loomed ahead of her, for the farmer she needed to meet was atop another condemned building.

Flapping drearily down, down, and further down the racy streets, the bat followed Umeko obediently through the noise and toxic fumes, while struggling against the gale that followed the stern director of photography. For once, Umeko was considering quitting, this humble D-Rank mission had proven to be far more arduous than it had any right to be. Across the lengthy multitude of hours, she had nearly been killed at a rate higher than she was normally subjected to. The only thing truly keeping her held together was how close she was to fully analyze this location.

Even if she had spent a great deal of time in these grimy, oil drenched sidewalls, she still struggled to cross at the various intersections. It didn’t take a class dedicated to locational analysis to figure out that the drivers of Motor City had it out for the pedestrians, more locational hazards than actual people. Umeko couldn’t even piece together the flimsiest theory for the existence of street signs and lights; the race went on, no matter what traffic laws had to say on the matter.

Holding out her Superimposer, she ensured that the rain would continue to pour, and the wind would very much continue to howl. Arriving at worn down cross-walk, tapped the button, and adamantly stood. Even if the NPCs of this city refused to obey the barest and most insignificant of rules. Flickering from red, the crossing light failed. A woman pushed to the edge, she instead took the sky, with her bat in tow. Flying across the street, she touched down unscathed, finding relief in the fact that she wouldn’t have to walk any more crosswalks to reach her destination.

Off-screen, an inexplicable futuristic looking 1980’s Italian supercar—that wasn’t a rainbow—took notice. Cutting into a u-turn which wove between speeding cars its driver locked his eyes on Ume and her bat.

Ever since she had been whisked away from her life of normalcy, she had developed a decently strong threshold for audacity. Today, that threshold had been passed by a degree that may have reset her back to pre-Earth-Chan levels of patience. Revving behind her and her batty ally—on a sidewalk, in broad daylight—was the bright white sports car. Ume tried to stare past the pitch black window to give the driver a look of contempt she didn’t know she was capable of.

Its door flipped up, and out stepped a retro-futuristic cyborg, hanging wires and all. Pointing a large caliber pistol first at the bat, and then mechanically at Ume, he said nothing. Wasting no time, Ume fired a bolt of lightning from her Superimpopser, knocking the large pistol to the ground. Fluttering off, she flew away at her meager top speeds, her companion flapping wildly in a futile attempt to slow down enough to keep pace with Ume. The first shot was fired, narrowly missing Umeko as she bounded behind a corner. Soon enough, the hum of the electric engine followed her.

With a door swung open, her peruser, with his large shades and even larger pistol had his eyes set on the young woman. She wasn’t prepared to outrun anything, let alone an unoutrunnable car. Quickly running out of time, she fumbled through her terrain data, landing on the dunes. Switching out the storm, and not even bothering to stop flying, she slotted in her next terrain. This little patch of street morphed into a desert. The street ready supercar was hardly ready for sand and quickly found itself trapped. Umeko, no longer in flight, came tumbling down to the sand. While the cars wheels continued to spin wildly, Umeko ran off, aiming to reach her destination before the man realized he could leave his car and shoot her to pieces.

Her last stretch of this mission had her fleeing into the derelict apartment complex which housed the farmer who acted as her employer. Luckily this time around, the complex wasn’t in as terrible shape as the other one. Lights happened to be on inside, even without the help of the blaring sun that came with her magical terrain. She was also relieved that this building wasn’t also housing a terrifying gang war between two rival sects of speed freaks. There was only one group of speed freaks.

Such a stark realization froze Umeko in her tracks. Bruised and bloody, she turned to face the revving group of dirt-bikers who took great joy in Umeko’s summoned terrain, and even more at the sight of the lithium producing friend. Her glazed eyes seemed mimicked by the simply glassy-eyed bat that flew alongside her. Having had enough, Umeko didn’t bother to wait, her longstanding patience had been tried at every floor and every corner. Flinging a fireball into one of the dirt bikers, knocking them off of the bike and into the ground. Shooting a furious glare at the remaining squad, she motioned her hand with the international sign for “Come and get it.”

Knocking out one was hardly enough to end this brawl, and the group prepared to strike. An ATV came barreling down from above, being driven by a overall wearing woman with a glowing saber. Once and for all, the bikers were scared off, and Umeko, for all the chaos she had endured, was finally offered some relief. She had come into contact with the farmer whom she had retrieved the bat for. The contract was fulfilled, Umeko passed over the subdued bat and wished the farmer well.

Returning to the street, she undid the magic of her viewfinder and collapsed into the pavement, “Never again…” She sighed. Of course, she was fully aware that this was only the start, and she had many agains ahead of her.
