She smoked on occasion, and was generally adapted to smoky gin joints, but something was something toxic in the air. Grabbing onto the bar, attempting to catch herself, she caught eyes with the woman in question. Arm of bronze, glittery gown, laser eye. Ordering Ume a whiskey neat she invited her over to a booth. [Break][break] There and then, it had been paid out to her. Even if Ume had to repeatedly atop the conversation, she eventually came to understand. This three legged cat was no euphemism, no object, no person of ill repute. A literal cat was missing, and this smoky woman was pulling out the big stops to get it back. Offering Ume a cigarette for the road, she left her with one last piece of advice, “Things in this town aren't always what they seem.” Which threw the rest of the conversation into murky territory. Confused, she was gone. [Break][break] Making her way down the cramped, dirty streets, she wondered how a cat could even make it in these mean streets. Cars zoomed past every breath in a violent rage. Her train of thought came to a crashing halt with the screeching of quarreling cats down a particularly shady alley. While the odds of simply running into this missing cat so quickly were low, and undramatic, she still felt it would have been foolish to not investigate. Turning down that alleyway, dodging its inexplicable puddles of terrifying mystique. [break][break] Sadly, no cats remained, only a man, well dressed, and flashing a sinister glare from under a wide brimmed hat. Unperturbed Ume curtly asked him, “Have you seen a three legged cat?” Pressing her knuckles against her waist, shooting back a glare of equal strength. In turn, she was served a reply just as blunt, and not nearly as helpful as she required, “I see a lot of things.”

The hours between her encounter in the alley and the chase for her life that occurred down yet another alley were massively eventful, although none of those events held any relevance. Regardless, shots continued to be fired in her direction, some occasionally coming near to grazing on the ricochet. Driving behind a dumpster, she tried to make sense of this. For a moment the shots stopped, and she glanced over her shoulder, only to have one more shot ding the side of the dumpster, “You’re asking too many questions! What’s your angle!?”\The assailant shouted, as he continued missing.

She had had enough of this, there were no ulterior motives; Ume really was just in search of a cat. Boldly, she stood up walking her way towards the gunman. The look she held in her eyes was enough to have him drop his firearm, and throw both his hands up in dismay, “It was Sammy the Snake, Joe Rags, and Big Angie, they’re the ones you want.” He admitted, although Ume wasn’t sure what he had admitted to, and she simply didn’t care. Getting closer, she invaded his sweaty personal space, nearly dipping her head low enough to go nose-to-nose. Once again, she repeated herself, “I won’t repeat myself: Cat. Three. Legs.” This gangster, barely able to make a shot, fainted.

Throwing her hands in her pockets, Ume whistled one earworm of a tune. Without a lead, she was going to have to get creative. Not a single cat had come into view between her leaving that gin joint and her shootout. This adventure was entirely hopeless. That woman in that Gin joint, distraught over the loss of her cat was going to end up brokenhearted. If she had the guile to make a forgery the cat, she couldn't, for she didn't even know what color it was supposed to be.

Styrofoam coffee cup in hand, and dejection running through her soul, Ume sat on a serrated bench. Meeting herself eye-to-eye in her black coffee, she was wounded by the sting of failure. She had undergone some dangerous and truly challenging missions, and this would be the one that would destroy her. Trying to think where it all went wrong, she painstakingly went through the events of the day, attempting to piece together what happened and why. It was in that reflection that her despair focused on the sounds surrounding her–zoom, crunch, zoom.

Splashing coffee as she stood, she ran back to where this all started. Although she did not enter the gin joint. She had finally understood the insubstantial warning she had been given at the very start of this ordeal. This city was a great danger to pets of all makes, yet nature, even in Earth-Chan’s house, had a way with turning things around. The same group of cars were bumping through the streets; erratic driving was the norm, but Ume had finally figured out that something stood out with the drivers by bar.

Somehow, she hadn’t been banned from Motor City, despite the amount of times she caused an accident by slotting one of her Terrain Datas. It goes without further explanation that that is just what she did. Slotting in the frozen lake, she allowed the three cars which had been grinding and smashing into one another to violently crash in a realistically lethal manner. Looking through the windows, her suspicions were made flesh. Walking one by one, she investigated the occupants until she found the one she was looking for. Forcing the door open, she grabbed the three-legged cat by the scruff of its neck and yanked it out, “Meow!” It cheerfully cried.

Returning the rambunctious feline to his owner, Ume felt a weight lifted off of her shoulders, one brought on by a struggle with a cat. Ordering another whiskey she had one last smoke with the bronze armed woman, and her cat, who smoked too.
