Vladimir turned away to survey their surroundings. The haze made it difficult to discern distant objects and staggering figures. He squinted, a futile attempt at focusing on the slowly approaching forms. "Whatever it is, I doubt it'll listen to reason." Thankfully, his alternative to reason included his fists. That much he could do to protect the child, even if proper interaction was likely off the table.
"Menu," the word slipped out, a test to see if this truly was like a game. Without a hotkey to press, speech was the next option. Despite being nothing more than a shot in the dark, a screen appeared before his face, and he made quick work finding the party screen.
He paused, squinting at the input field.
"Got a name?" His eyes flicked to the distance to check the hobbling forms before he peered down to the stranger. Not the girl; he didn't care if she had a name. He doubted she could be added to the party. Normally, backtalking someone akin to Vladimir, but with less restraint, on the streets would have gotten you mugged or worse. Perhaps not in Switzerland, but definitely back in his territory. The icing on the cake was the familiar curse, hushed despite how easily he could still hear it, all while the green-haired stranger turned his back on the big bad wolf. Intentional. Did he want to rile him up? The guards would no doubt come if he fell back on impulse. Maybe that was the plan.
Yet, it was not anger in his eyes but instead amusement. He might as well play along.
Before not-a-kid could walk too far away, Vladimir closed the distance with long strides. He reached out with a calloused hand and gripped the back of the other's shirt. With a swift yank, he pulled him back towards himself and leaned over, his words a low growl near his ear. "You shouldn't turn your back after cursing me."
As he spoke, his other hand seized an arm. The moment he said his piece, he would none-too-gently turn him around and hoist him over his shoulder. A hand on the back of the human-shaped sack of potatoes held him in place while Vladimir turned to stride toward the nearest alley. He might not be in the correct district, assuming there was some level of organization in the layout of this place. Should he consult a map? Probably. Will he? Definitely not.
His steps came to a sudden halt as a light weight bumped into him. Even in the more crowded parts of the street, he only received a faint brush of the arm, most giving him a wide berth to avoid a collision. Yet, a collision still found him, and he turned to peer down at the one that somehow managed to walk right into a tree. His curiosity likely could not be seen past the harsh look in his eyes, the ever-present glare coupled with a frown.
A phone, the likely culprit behind the traffic jam, was quickly tucked away in a pocket. Eye-catching green hair, the start of a one-sided argument prematurely clipped off, and a look that he had a hard time discerning the meaning of. He was accustomed to fright or desperation. Maybe leaving for this shopping trip was the right idea after all; he was out of practice with normal civilians.
Assuming this person could be considered normal. Were any of them normal anymore?

The approaching man looked young and ill-equipped to be... wherever they were. Then again, he supposed he was too. Even if he was dressed for the climate, he lacked proper weapons (aside from a pocket knife). At least he had his fists. This kid, however?
Maybe he could turn him into the babysitter.

More for the smell than his new companions; though, he could do without the child. He reached down and peeled off the little fingers clinging to his jeans. Just as Vladimir snapped his fingers to signal one of his men to drag the debtor away, a blue screen flooded his vision.
The corners of his lips twitched upward, and the world around him shifted. Before he knew it, he was no longer in an abandoned warehouse but--
Damn, it reeked. Who left the bodies out in the sun?
Vladimir pulled the sleeve of his jacket down to the tips of his fingers and covered his mouth and nose with the fabric. He was accustomed to foul stenches, but this permeated around the entire area and burned the eyes. Despite this, he surveyed his surroundings, finding hazy skies and ruins. He could've sworn he recognized some of the buildings, but that was a matter for another time.
It may have seemed like he chose too quickly, wanting nothing more than to get the screen that suddenly appeared out of his face. In truth, he had a vague idea of what each of the so-called classes might entail, and he figured the second option would suit him just fine. He might be a horror gamer, but he could at least grasp the concepts of standard RPGs with relative ease.
A small hand grabbed his jeans, a hand whose owner immediately tensed upon a set of glaring green eyes settling on them. The kid--a young girl, by the look of her--couldn't be more than five or six, unless malnutrition hindered her growth. She was scrawny, her clothes baggy and dirty, hems frayed. Matted brown hair fell to her shoulders, blue eyes wide and fearful (though he was certain she was more afraid of him than their current situation).
Then, yet another screen appeared.

A calloused hand waved away the notification screen as the light from the teleportation faded away.
He had spent the past day planning out the restructuring of his gang (could they even be called a gang by this point? Mafia, perhaps?), but that was all. Planning. The headache caused by the Earth deciding to remodel the planet was preventing many of their sectors from smoothly operating, an issue that needed to be resolved before someone got the bright idea to revolt. Spending the past twenty-four hours on this was beginning to weigh on him, but there was still so much to do.
So, why was he not working right now? The answer was simple: they needed to restock their supplies, and Unison Central was currently the best place to do so. He could have sent someone else to fetch their supplies. Should have. Yet, he chose to go himself instead of seizing the opportunity for a nap. He needed to stretch his legs, anyway.
Green eyes gazed upward to the peaks of mountains seen beyond the rooftops, a scenic view he only spared the briefest of moments to take in. Aaand that moment was over.

One might take one look at Vladimir and assume he had a terrible childhood. They would be wrong. His mother was a Japanese woman who fell in love with and married a Russian professor. He grew up with a warm, supportive family and wanted for nothing.

It was Vladimir who cut ties with his family when he was eighteen. He gave them no warning nor reason. He simply packed up and left. One of his school friends introduced him to their friend group late into their final year, and it was that group that managed to entrance a still-impressionable Vladimir into leaving everything behind. For what? Money, of course.

Vladimir was inducted into what started out as nothing more than a petty gang taking orders from larger and more influential groups. He put his heart and soul into the group and did everything he could to help them rise up the hierarchy, even if it meant selling his body (and, to a certain extent, his soul). This persisted for seven years before he was able to use his looks to get close enough to the heads of the group governing them.
