Gleeford had been in the middle of reading a blue prompt that appeared in front of him on the police precinct's headquarters. The next thing he knew, he was looking up at a familiar sky with towering structures in his peripherals.[break][break]
"...It's still there." Gleeford was referring to the strange thing floating just in front of his face. It had a little planet earth on it, and some text. Gleeford could obviously read the text, but he couldn't make heads or tails of it. Class. Monsters. A threat. An apology. It was strange. Was this a kind of light display? How was it floating there?[break][break]
Reaching up, the man would swing his hand around it to see if there were strings. None. Brushing the prompt as he retracted his hand, he brushed the edge of it. The display changed and a new prompt popped up. More of this class nonsense. Gleeford wanted to climb up off the ground, but he was a bit weirded out. The back of his head was tingling, a sort of intuitive sense of fear was in his gut. That word 'monster' kept drifting back into his thoughts.[break][break]
"....Fffffff-uuuck. Fine. I'll read it. Yadda yadda... Gremlin mode, Finding out, Sowing, Reaping, What Consequences? Oh? 10 defense? That just doubled my... Bwehehe, sick." Gleeford had been ruffling his hair in frustration, but decided to press on and read the prompts. He didn't want to miss any information if the situation was actually dangerous. Worst case scenario, he wasted a few minutes on some weird live performance or whatever. It didn't hurt that what he was reading and the dubious nature implied by his 'class' suited him.[break][break]
"Let's see here. Oh, this next one... Is it tellin' me what to do?" The prompt had change and a task was described. A few other things were mentioned on the panel. There were 50 other people in the area, they had 12 hours to do this task thing, and a small taunt that suggested not going over the time limit. What the heck was this prompt though? Take control of beacons to spawn a boss and defeat it? What the hell was a beacon? And a boss? In this context, Gleeford didn't know what it meant.[break][break]
Staring at the prompt, he waited for the next one to arrive. Surely it would appear and clear things up. Surely. Anytime now. It would appear riiiight now. Nope. Perplexed, Gleeford reached forward and brushed the window again, causing it to vanish. In a panic, he waved his hands in the space it had occupied, but nothing changed. He was just greeted by the sky again. Taking note of his surroundings, Gleeford finally realized he was laying down on the ground.[break][break]
"Oof... Now where am I? Let's ask some..." Another sobering realization greeted Gleeford after he climbed to his feet. He had no clue where the hell he was. This didn't even seem man made. These structures looked like office buildings or skyscrapers, but they were so tall he couldn't see the top. As an average American, Gleeford had seen tall buildings before. He generally knew the scope of skyscrapers in the US, and this was not it. Were these even possible? He couldn't even see the top, and that's not even mentioning the vines coiling around the structures, or the vast swaths of collapsed streets. This... Felt surreal.[break][break]
"Hellll'ooooooo!" Gleeford cupped his hands around his mouth and did something he would potentially regret. He shouted into the area, echoing dully down the corridors of buildings. Who knows, maybe he'd get lucky and someone friendly would hear.

Dank. Decrepit. Dark. There was no place quite like the alley behind the corner store. Scratch that, there were tons of places like the damp stretch of concrete that Octavious occasionally walked through. Hundreds of times he had walked this stretch, and not more than a couple times did he take note of that trip. This was the obscured walk of shame behind the gambling den Octavious frequented. The path losers and bums walked, out of sight from the wealthier patrons.[break][break]
From the smells to the atmosphere of the place, there wasn't much good about it, but if there's one thing you could count on, it was past-date sweets in the dumpster. When you've bet your last penny and lost, any amount of luck is appreciated. Unfortunately, Octavious was banned from that fine establishment, he had one faint positive memory of tossing trash cans and causing chaos to escape a bouncer. What a depressing hidden walkway to traverse.

The chair groaned as you leaned back. It wasn't the comfiest of thrones, but boy, did you feel relieved. You'd done it. Your goons had caught him in the act, literally walking towards a police station smirking like an idiot. Shocking he hadn't been found earlier, he always was a skeevy one.[break][break]
"That must be them," You mumbled under your breath at the sound of breaks squealing in the yard. You were hunkered down in a warehouse of dubious origin. The perfect place to take care of a snitch. It wouldn't be long now until this ordeal was over.[break][break]
"Knees. In front of me." Two lumbering goons came in through a shutter door, dragging a limp body behind them. You knew better. He wasn't dead or unconscious, he was sandbagging to make things difficult. Typical.[break][break]
"I said knees, don't make this harder than it needs to be." You spoke with more emphasis as you stood from your seat. It felt wrong. Having to stand up when this miscreant entered. It was like a reversal of roles. Still being difficult, of course. Your goons made sure he followed directions, hoisting him up and resting him on his knees in front of you.[break][break]

Your knife glinted in the dim fluorescent lights as you reached forward and gave him a solid slap on the cheek with the flat of the blade. Continuing with the taunting gestures, you pried his mouth open and started to move it back and fourth between the corners of his mouth.[break][break]
"Now where do I star--"[break][break]
BUMPH. BUMPH.[break][break]
Two loud impacts sounded as two side entrances burst open. It had been a silent night, but now red and blue lights were coloring the backdrop and sirens were blaring. They had approached the building incognito, and were now filing in with guns raised. You heard them shouting 'hands' but you were frozen in shock.[break][break]
Looking down, you were greeted with a dull pair of smiling eyes. Worse yet, he had clenched his teeth against the blade. Both of your goons were looking at you in a panic. They had been holding the man in place, and didn't have their weapons drawn.[break][break]
"Y-you..."[break][break]
And then it happened. A shrill chortle. The most shit eating grin plastered across his face. He was enjoying this. The rat bastard was genuinely enjoying this.[break][break]
"Fuck it."[break][break]
With a jerk of your wrist, the blade yanked out through his cheek, dragging a trail of red into the air. Changing the trajectory, you attempted to stab down, but to no avail. A loud series of bangs let you know you had failed, right before everything faded to black.[break][break]
BACKSTORY
Octavious grew up in a rather mundane household. At least, it used to be. Being the third of three children, Octavious was always the runt. He had two older brothers, one ten years older and the other eight years older. Considering the age gap, though never explicitly stated, he had been an accident. A happy one, mind you. His parents were very loving, very busy, but loving. They had advanced in their careers after his brothers entered school, so when Octavious came along, they couldn't go on leave for too long. Instead, they had their free labor, erm, their older children look after him.[break][break]
In the grand scheme of things, it was a bad choice. The older boys weren't overtly mean or anything of the sort. They did as older brothers did. Teased him, abused their authority, and occasionally messed with him. Typical household stuff. But Octavious wasn't a typical household runt. It very quickly became apparent he was showing signs of an impulse control disorder. His retaliation to such provocations was always inordinate, whether that be the way he yelled and insulted his brothers, or in the way he got physical. The way to 'solve' the issue seemed to be just leaving Octavious alone, but even that didn't last long. The lies, the stealing, the disparaging tongue. He was more than a handful. He was too much.[break][break]
Boarding school. Strict rules, stern discipline and corporal punishment. All things designed to break problem children, and all things that just wound Octavious up further. At first he was explosive in every regard. He'd fight, scream, break objects and actively rebel against the tiniest of requests. This was what the school was used to, and so Octavious adapted. He became vindictive and more passive. He learned to read the room and decide whether or not it was worth getting rowdy. It was the perfect forge to hone his virtually criminal tendencies. He got worse in every way, and gained the knowledge to hide it. Subversion through theft, graffiti, incriminating others. His record was clean but his peers knew he was trouble. In this way, he graduated.[break][break]
Instead of returning home at 18, Octavious jumped from job to job, never maintaining composure long enough to form a career. Stints in jail riddled his young adult years, and by the time he approached thirty, he was a career criminal, gambler and deadbeat. He was in debt to many bookies, he had made too many promises to too many powerful figures and he had alienated anyone who ever gave him a chance. He was truly a rat bastard. Rather than work at the issue, Octavious continued in his nefarious ways and thought up a solution to not only clear his debts, but to 'clear' his name. He'd turn state's witness and get a cushy living space and job somewhere else as some sort of witness protection. [break][break]
It was going so smoothly until the man he was turning became a pin cushion for police pistols. Gave Octavious a nasty scar too. In a stern turn of events, the state which had been his ally left him to fend for himself. There was nothing else they could gain out of his cooperation with their target dead. He was screwed. Properly hung out to dry. As he smoked on the steps of the hospital after his stay, he sparked his lighter and took a long drag.[break][break]
