Suddenly, she became cognizant of the cheese sauce on her face, and she wiped it off in an unladylike fashion. “I’ve always wanted to visit L.A. ever since I was a baby gay, y’know? As she entered the reception hall, Maria fixed the bisexual flag pin to her jacket and smiled. Her homeland hadn’t always been kind to queer people, but that didn’t matter now – she was in a safe space, at least for now. It was one of the few consoling things about her homeland being gone. She’d dreamed of going to Los Angeles to express herself more vibrantly, and now she had the opportunity to do so! And maybe pick up a hot girl! Then her belly rumbled, and she realized that she hadn’t eaten for too long. So off she went to the nacho stand. In a moment, she was scarfing down nachos in a most unladylike fashion.[break][break]
Maria swallowed the last of her nachos with a gulp, then looked around – and spotted a pretty boy surveying the grounds, too. “Hey there!” she said, as his eyes met hers. “I love what you’ve done with your hair!”[break][break]
There wasn’t a hint of mockery in her voice. This was a place where people like them could express themselves openly and freely, after all!

Once they were done clambering up, Maria checked Mr. Beast to see if he was doing okay. She had been doing so when the cat pointed behind them. Freezing, Maria turned around, with a sinking feeling as to what was behind her…[break][break]
And, naturally, she came face to face with the giant. Maria had to think under pressure, and fast![break][break]
“Well, Mr. Giant, sir…” said Maria, trying her best to smile under the circumstances, “…we’d really appreciate it if you left these townsfolk alone. We don’t want to resort to violence around here! We all just want to be friends.”[break][break]

Maria blushed, then waved her hand dismissively. If she didn’t know that Mr. Beast was being sincere, she’d almost be insulted – did he think she was some sort of dainty flower, instead of a kickass berserker? As it was, she couldn’t help but find his concern cute.[break][break]

If I were afraid of little things like climbs, I wouldn’t have become an adventurer.” That was all the warning she gave Mr. Beast before she sheathed her spear and started clambering up the vines with gusto. “Come on, let’s go!” she said, motioning to Mr. Beast as she made her way up the vines.[break][break]

Once the other girl left, Maria breathed out a sigh of relief. Thankfully, the crazy chick didn’t last much longer in their company – Maria didn’t know if she could stand by and watch while said crazy chick did horrible things. That wasn’t her problem anymore now, though![break][break]
Then they came to the entrance. Maria balked at how huge it was – this was not something she was prepared to deal with by her lonesome, or even with a few of her other friends. “Well, uh…”[break][break]
Fortunately, it didn’t take too long before Mr. Beast offered a solution. “Yeah, let’s not go knocking around their front doors, shall we?” she said, with a sheepish grin. “I think we should find some kind of back entrance. There’s gotta be like a back door or a hole in the ruined castle, right?”

“Oh, well – okay.” Maria gulped down her remaining water. “Spend as much time as you want rifling through my stats. I don’t mind the attention.” She was a bit bummed that he didn’t want to spend some more time with her, but what could she do? She was sure that he was pooped after that night of dancing. In no time, the club started to wind down, and people started pouring out. Maria pointed to the exit with her thumb. “This has been fun,” she said, only half-sincerely. For a moment, Maria couldn’t help but get lost in thought. If more people were like Dee, then maybe the little scandal with Maria’s father wouldn’t have happened. Not that she’d make that accusation after they’d made her food for her…and apparently hadn’t poisoned it. When it was over, Maria wiped sweat from her brow. “Yeah, I’m pretty damn pooped too. And FYI, I have been. Taking lessons, that is,” she said. With nothing else to do, Maria decided to follow Enigma to the bar and get some water – dancing was thirsty work, after all. And it was important to keep hydrated when dancing![break][break]
Once her water had arrived, Maria took a swig, then set the glass down and wiped excess water from her face. “So, doing anything after this? Or just crashing at home?” she said, as she stretched her arms. “Because, like…I could give you my contact details, if you want, and we can hang out some time after this. You seem like a cool dude.” [break][break]
She wasn’t going to pull anything untoward, of course – at least, not without seeing him without his mask. She was pretty certain he was easy on the eyes, though!

Maria watched the strange creatures prepare her food with a shocked silence. As everything was starting to wrap up, she smiled at the other girl – despite said younger girl’s oddities, Maria could get behind someone who served her a good meal any day. And hey, maybe she’d been a bit too harsh on the weird creatures, especially that weird blob thing…whatever.

Not that she’d verbalized her displeasure! It wasn’t good form to insult people who were preparing your food.

“I’d like the…purple one, please,” said Maria, smiling more sincerely this time while pointing at the presumably grape one with her finger. “I always did have a soft spot for grape, see.”

In no time, Maria was gobbling down her food. “So…uh, what’s the story behind those “friends” of yours?” she said, as she chowed down on the burger. It was surprisingly good for something cooked with dragon breath!

Maria blinked. The young girl had set up shop with what appeared to be a yellow baby dragon, a black…blob thing, and a worm with a face. Maria eyed the three with some leeriness, but said nothing of it; they seemed to not be hostile, at least, and being offput by something didn’t justify violence against it. Then the other girl – Dee Dee, apparently – handed her a notebook instead of talking. Was this girl mute? Not that it mattered, as Maria wouldn’t push it.[break][break]
Instead, Maria put on her best, most sincere smile. “Hi there! I’ll take the chef’s recommendation and have a Tomatonator, then!” she said, with a grin that showed her perfect teeth. It was best to confront life head-on like this, really. As long as those weird-but-apparently-friendly creatures didn’t try anything too weird, there wouldn’t be any problem.[break][break]
She had half a mind to raise the issue of the creatures to the other girl, but chose to merely eye them warily. It was…odd to see them around.

At the question Enigma posed to her, Maria’s eyes seemed to gleam with inner fire, and her body started to sway to the beat. But Enigma couldn’t be prepared for what happened next – suddenly, she was dancing like she was on fire! She hadn’t spent all those years in dance practice for nothing, after all; and at the end of it a few minutes later, she pointed at Enigma, urging him to join her on the proverbial battlefield. “C’mon!” she said.[break][break]
Then she lost herself in the beat once again, not really paying attention to whether or not Enigma had truly decided to join her. Something about music just made her feel so damn alive. It didn’t matter if nothing came of it – if nothing else, they were making a good memory together here and now.[break][break]
She learned to flow with the change in music, too; from bumping and grinding to moving robotically to more fluid, graceful movements. She could do this all night, really – but what she was feeling now was a closeness with the man she’d invited to the dance floor.
